Since 1978, ESC has been working with an average of 150 nonprofits each year to help them find and implement sustainable solutions for on-going challenges. Nearly 200 ESC consulting experts, accomplished business leaders and professionals, trained specifically to work with nonprofit organizations, volunteer their energy and expertise to give back in a meaningful way to the community they care about. Why We re Different ESC was founded by 19 of Chicago s most eminent corporate leaders from companies like RR Donnelley and Inland Steel, who recognized the vast positive impact they could have on community needs by working together with nonprofit leaders. Since its founding, ESC has grown to become a nationally recognized resource and the region s largest nonprofit provider of capacity-building assistance for nonprofits and public agencies. Why It Matters Having served over 4,500 client organizations to date, ESC consultants have worked with clients ranging from small health clinics and neighborhood-development organizations to whole community networks and systems as complex as the Chicago Public Schools. ESC consultants play a vital role in building a healthier nonprofit sector and enhancing the quality of life, health and opportunities for millions of local residents and their communities. From the Chair Nonprofits have not had an easy run the past three years. Operating in Illinois struggling economy, nonprofit leaders have seen traditional revenue lines decrease with deepening budget challenges and increasing competition for funding and donors. Many have felt pressure from every direction and the need for a trusted consulting resource has never been greater. Executive Service Corps fills this need for nonprofits every year with its teams of skilled nonprofit business advisors, specialists who provide sectorfocused options at a price that s affordable for limited budgets. In 2014, as this report shows, the consulting experts of ESC worked with 134 clients in 158 engagements, providing objective critical thinking, business knowledge and innovative, practical solutions effectively preparing their organization for what lies ahead tough operating decisions within the framework of future goals, honest assessment of their options for improvement and new services/sources of revenue, and strong, supportive leadership in the midst of change and challenge. It s our mission, our specialty and our privilege to serve and support the nonprofit community with all the new ideas, seasoned business expertise, personal commitment and resources available from our dedicated ESC consulting members. I invite you to take a look inside this report to see how ESC can help the nonprofits you care about. Toni S. Smith Former Partner, Spencer Stuart Chair, ESC Board of Directors From the President/CEO An organization s leadership is key to unlocking its potential, being resilient in challenging times and reaching success, however success is defined. Executive Service Corps is a trusted nonprofit partner in this journey, the engine that can be counted on to power forward momentum, building leadership, strategy and solutions all along the way. As a nonprofit, ESC has tested and demonstrated its own resiliency, adapted to new economic realities, leveraged its strengths and taken advantage of trends and new approaches. As a result, 2014 marked the end of a strategic plan cycle that gave us three consecutive years of steady and consistent growth, innovation and collaboration. Each page of this report illustrates ESC s work the how, the who and the value involved in guiding individual nonprofit resiliency and success and cumulative social impact. Regard it as your idea book for the nonprofit you care about. In 2015, ESC is building on its deep sector experience and the strategies and approaches that worked so well in 2014, encouraged and optimistic about what lies ahead for the nonprofits we serve. As ESC thrives, we are eager to share what we ve learned and all we offer in the areas of leadership, strategy and solutions to benefit not only Chicago area nonprofits but service organizations throughout Illinois. Mega-challenges lie ahead but we will face them together, supported with all the strength of ESC Chicago and a desire to join with you to improve life in our community. Pamela J. Wilcox President & CEO Our mission to make nonprofits successful. p 1
3 Changing the World in Our Communities Leadership LEADERSHIP CONSULTING BOARD DEVELOPMENT COACHING & MENTORING TEAM DEVELOPMENT TRANSITION MANAGEMENT Inspired, visionary nonprofit leadership doesn t spring unassisted from passion for the cause. In today s nonprofit world, high impact leadership and the informed decision-making, good judgment and evidence-based strategy that attend it requires focused effort, shared goals, trust and, very often, guidance and/or mentoring. Leadership is the most critical path to a nonprofit s success, deserving of the resources required to nurture and build it. Those nonprofits that make this a priority are rewarded with a well-functioning, efficient board that embraces its role and responsibilities, strengthened by CEO/board teamwork that fosters strategic thinking about the organization s future and collaboration that addresses today s challenges. Examples from ESC s nonprofit clients in 2014 high-impact leadership that is changing their world. Great leadership at the board and CEO levels is the best indicator of nonprofit overall success. Defining Issues Formulating Plans The ESC team assisted the Village President, Board of Trustees and senior staff in defining issues facing the Village and formulating plans for the future. ESC consultants continue to work with the Village on our annual Goals and Objectives process. The ESC consultants bring a broad management background to the process and provide a unique perspective on the issues and challenges we face. Gary O Rourke Village Manager Village of Streamwood Board Development: Unique Perspective on Goals and Objectives INTERIM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SERVICE Finding the Permanent Director Raising Professionalism We chose ESC because we felt they would help us throughout the total process from articulating our wants in an interim and permanent executive director, keeping us professional at all times and assisting in finding the permanent director. I credit ESC and our interim for holding our hands through the process, making us go through all the steps. The whole experience has made CDSF and the individuals involved better. We could not have done it without ESC. Milly Goldstein Former Board Chair Chicago Dental Society Interim Executive Director: Total Process Involvement Linda A. Teplin, Ph.D. Students from Chicago High School for the Arts Improving Performance as a Team Saving Time ESC s Team Coaching has allowed us to improve our performance and efficiency as a team. The engagement made a huge difference that will be long-lasting. We have more positive communications among the executive team and between us and staff/students. ESC has made a huge difference in our ability to be productive. I highly recommend the organization to my colleagues. Linda A. Teplin, Ph.D. Owen L. Coon Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Clinical Psychology Director of the PsychoLegal Studies Program, Northwestern University Medical School We had limited resources and a search firm was out of the question for us. Executive Service Corps was the perfect match for our needs. The ESC team was extremely helpful in developing a hiring system for two positions and their professional expertise helped us save time as the information provided narrowed down the field to the best fits for our needs. José Ochoa Executive and Artistic Director Chicago High School for the Arts Transition Management: A Hiring System Team Development: Long-lasting Changes Is your nonprofit prepared for an anticipated or unexpected leadership turnover? The Dare to Lead survey conducted by CompassPoint and the Meyer based on a nationwide survey of 3,000 nonprofit CEOs, found that 67% expected to leave their nonprofit leadership post by A recent Bridgespan poll reported fewer than 40% of participating nonprofits having a succession plan in place to smooth such transitions and gaps in leadership. 4 Working for Every Size Nonprofit Strategies STRATEGY STRATEGIC PLANNING BUSINESS PLANNING ORGANIZATIONAL ASSESSMENT SOCIAL ENTERPRISE REVENUE GENERATION The operative word in strategic planning is strategy. The ESC approach focuses on strategy that helps the organization remain fluid, adaptive to changing circumstances and prepared for potential challenges while driving toward success. The path toward success is never straight and not always clear. Strategies in the planning process must be guided by data toward outcomes that are visionary, yet realistic and attainable, directed by integrated teamwork. We view the entire organization as a team that is ready to be mobilized toward shared goals. The elements of strategy in our ESC portfolio of services for nonprofits are carefully structured to take a deep and holistic look inside an organization, assessing its circumstances and potential, the resources and capacity for meeting short term priorities and long term goals. A Trusted Source My first interaction was through the executive coaching program. It was such a great experience for me that ESC has become a very trusted source of strategic and process consulting. The consultants asked very good questions that have caused us to dig even deeper into our mission and helped us maximize our resources. Bill Curry Chief Program Officer Breakthrough Urban Ministries Business Plan: Maximize Resources Building Capacity Focusing Energy I first heard of ESC when W2C was awarded the Alford-Axelson Excellent Emerging Organization Award in Part of the award package was having ESC consultants help us to identify key areas for improvement that would enable W2C to build capacity. The team did a wonderful job capturing stakeholder views through a broad survey that included clients, board, and staff perspectives. ESC's organizational assessment helped us to prioritize work projects that had to get done, and focus our energy on those key areas. Elyse Danckers Executive Director Waukegan to College Organization Assessment: Prioritize Projects David Gottlieb Full Circle Communities North West Housing Partnership Practical, Economical, Workable, and Meaningful Team Carefully Matched to the Issues We reserve 75 percent of our economics for the provision of supportive services to residents of our [affordable housing] properties. Developing a mission, vision, and strategic plan was a critical need for our future growth and stability They helped us produce a plan that is practical, economical, workable and meaningful. ESC helped capture what Full Circle is, and helped us outline the steps we must take to get where we want to be. They added enormous value. David Gottlieb Executive Director Full Circle Communities Strategic Plan: Growth and Stability Breakthrough Urban Ministries p4 I discovered ESC through a friend of mine who utilized your services when she was involved in a nonprofit in Aurora. I chose ESC because of the way the consulting is designed by having a team approach specifically having people from various disciplines that match issues we wanted to address. The end result, an organizational assessment, was excellent because it provided a road map for how our nonprofit could further develop and become more sustainable. Robyn Sandys Executive Director North West Housing Partnership Organization Assessment: Roadmap for Development ESComplete There is no other organization serving the nonprofit sector that offers ESC s unique brand of consulting an approach we call ESComplete. ESC consultants understand and appreciate the unique challenges of nonprofits. ESC s continuing education program trains them to holistically assess each client s diverse needs and priorities for addressing them. Then ESC carefully identifies the consulting skills and experience of our dedicated experts in cohesive teams that stay with the nonprofit client through implementation of sustainable solutions. 5 Public Service Impact One by One and All Together Solutions ESC Continuum of Nonprofit Service LEADERSHIP CONSULTING BOARD DEVELOPMENT Data-driven, evidence-based tactics help nonprofits address their most complex challenges and remove identified barriers to efficiency, capacity for service and advancement. ESC helps nonprofits build solutions that go beyond data-gathering to recognize the integrated effect that each nonprofit area of activity and endeavor has upon all others. The ESC delivery of solutions involves trained, multidisciplinary teams available to assist nonprofits and their teams in reaching the solutions needed and facilitating the implementation process, while remaining alert to the impact and opportunities for the organization as a whole. Such solutions demand creativity, innovation, contemporary methods and technologies, each a part of ESC training for its cadre of consulting experts and their professional approach to every nonprofit engagement. ESC partners with nonprofits to find practical, sustainable solutions solutions that work. MacArthur Arts & Culture Loan Fund The MacArthur Arts & Culture Loan Fund is a customized solution for the ongoing cyclical cash flow challenges faced by many arts and culture nonprofits. ESC administration of this program assures the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur that the small to mid-sized local arts and culture organizations it supports (either directly or through the MacArthur Arts Funds at the Prince Charitable Trusts and the Richard H. Driehaus ) can apply for securitized loans through one of two currently participating banks. Since the MacArthur Arts & Culture Loan Fund s inception in 2009, 28 organizations have secured or are in the process of securing lines-of-credit or bridge loans, ranging from $30,000 to $100,000 with a total $2.5 million in loans made thus far. Any of the 130+ organizations eligible for the Loan Fund can access the full range of ESC services. COACHING & MENTORING Truly, this has meant our survival. When we first received the loan, the organization was in a terrible situation and without MacArthur guaranteeing that loan; we would have gone under [now] we re feeling good about things and we're making headway we would otherwise have had to close our doors. it was a lifeline. We were short on operating cash at that time, and absent that loan I'm not 100% sure that our doors would still be open. The probability is significantly lower than 100%... It was essential to us in order to hold it together. Yes [like] our employee handbook we didn't have one before ESC and we have one now, and our improved finance reporting. ESC helped us think a different way and ultimately find for ourselves what would work TEAM DEVELOPMENT TRANSITION MANAGEMENT Metropolitan Family Services INTERIM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SERVICE STRATEGY STRATEGIC PLANNING Robust New Mission Our ESC consultants conducted multiple focus groups and interviews with stakeholders including donors, board members, program participants and staff and elicited great language and concepts that informed the robust new mission, Building a secure and hopeful today so that children facing health issues and poverty succeed tomorrow. When staff heard the new mission for the first time, they broke into spontaneous applause and cheers. Donors and volunteers say, Now we understand what you do. Thank you, Executive Service Corps! A Practical Roadmap, Not Broad Strokes Cathy Krieger We've operated this revenuegenerating small business for years, so we know the product was sound. But as one of many programs in a large agency, the unique value of this work was just not standing out the way it needed to. Executive Service Corps delivered. They took the time to learn our business, and then brought useful data and insights to bear. They also respected and built upon the expertise of our team, which makes a big difference when it comes to implementation. We needed a road map, not broad strokes. Executive Service Corps supports the critical role that companies and their leaders play in our collaborative efforts with the Corporate Citizenship Connection. This unique service enhances the effectiveness of corporate executives who serve on nonprofit boards with tools and resources tailored to their needs. A key ingredient of the ESC service is its flexibility based on company needs. Where one company wants a custom onsite Board Leadership Forum for its executives, with case studies, breakouts and peer group networking, governance primer and customized idea book and toolkit, another company prefers one-on-one coaching and mentoring for its executives, with small group one-hour forums on select topics such as Board Recruitment and Onboarding. ESC believes that more effective nonprofit boards lead to better decision-making and nonprofit service and growth. This program is designed to expand the role that corporate executives play in this process and build a reliable pipeline for nonprofit board service. Mike Christ ESC Engagement Manager and Interim Executive Director Coordinator Value to nonprofits and the communities they serve Local nonprofits of all sizes will have better trained, more committed leaders on their Boards. Neighborhoods will benefit by having more nonprofits with greater capacity delivering much needed services for their residents. Individuals in the community will be inspired by the company s community support model toward leadership and service and become engaged in giving back to the community, helping meet the growing needs of the communitities. More effective nonprofit boards lead to better decision making and nonprofit service and growth. Successful nonprofits facilitate workforce development and contribute to a more vibrant cultural and economic environment. * Repeat client p 8 p 9
