1 Chicago Training Center P r e s e n t s The Fourth Annual Gala Celebration V Ready... Set... Row! Friday, November 12, 2010
2 Thank you very much for your continued support and your attendance at this, our 4th annual Ready... Set... Row! Gala. As we have come to expect, progress has been swift over the last year. Our organization has advanced greatly and we thank our supporters for that. Working with the Park District has allowed us the security of a winter home base and, a base of operations at times of inclement weather. Working with the city has helped secure our river location at the confluence of Bubbly Creek and the South Branch of the Chicago River. Our kids have seen and felt the benefit. This year we competed in eight regattas (indoor and outdoor), compared to the year before when we competed only five times. Out of town trips included visits to Ohio, Crystal Lake and Rockford. Looking forward, having purchased a trailer, we will be autonomous and I plan to compete more than ever. Our program has seen seismic shifts in the less visible areas of governance, committee work, operations and volunteer commitment. It is with pride that I can say that we currently have a stable of sixteen volunteer coaches all from highly esteemed rowing programs or physical education backgrounds. Without them our machine would run much less smoothly. Our Advisory Committee is exemplary, giving great direction and insight to the Board. In addition, the for-profit providers with whom we work have made life much easier, allowing us to maximize our program with no excess waste. The new professionally designed website and branding is a great example of this collaboration. In sum, we are continually attempting to meet our goals and with help from supporters like you, we can continue to do so. CTC aims to be an Institution for Chicago underserved youth and we hope to be an inspiration to others. As I look to the future, I see the scope for greater advancement in programming, recruitment and influence. It will take some time for our model to mature and I look forward to keeping you informed of our progress. If you would like to get involved, please do not hesitate to contact us. I hope you have a wonderful time at the CTC annual party, celebrating what your support has made possible. 3 Menu I first became aware of the Chicago Training Center a few years ago, and was instantly an admirer of the program. In talking with its founder, Montana Butsch, I could see his passion not only for rowing, but also teaching young people a sport that could change their lives. Last year, I had the chance to witness two of CTC s rowers experience the annual Oxford/Cambridge Boatrace in London, a trip that made quite an impression on both the young rowers and myself. Earlier this year, I profiled CTC and some of the rowers in a report for ABC7 news, and it was well received by our viewers. I look forward to seeing CTC continue to grow and touch the lives of those who would benefit from this inspirational program. Karen Jordan co-anchors the #1 rated weekend newscast in Chicago, the ABC 7 Weekend News with Ravi Baichwal. Jordan, who grew up in Evanston, Ill., joined ABC 7 Chicago in July Jordan has been recognized for excellence throughout her career. 4 Bank of America is proud to support the Chicago Training Center. Like individuals, businesses are members of the community too. The most extraordinary enterprises take this connection to heart, doing what they can to help their neighborhoods grow. Bank of America is pleased to support the Chicago Training Center for its active community involvement and appreciation of its important role in advancing the public good. Visit us at bankofamerica.com One afternoon a few weeks ago, when I was helping out around our church, a young man knocked on the door. It turned out to be Montana Butsch, who had made a special trip to meet me in person. I learned that we grew up not far from each other and we had three important things in common. We both played college sports at a very high level; we both enjoyed giving back to kids; and we both love our hometown, Chicago. He told me he had seen Hoop Dreams when it first came out more than sixteen years ago. Back then he was in high school and the movie made a lasting impression on him. During college he knew that some day he wanted find a way to give back to the underserved kids who weren t as fortunate as he was. In college he rowed for the University of Pennsylvania as well as the University of Oxford in England where he studied for his master s degree. He could have taken a corporate job and been set for life. But he never forgot his dream to come back and start an elite rowing program for Chicago Public School students. And here we are just four years later with twice as many kids now being mentored by some of the best rowers in the world. And tutored by some of the best volunteer teachers you could ask for. All because he saw a movie about another high school kid who went to college to play basketball, then came home to help out in his community. The day I met Montana, I could see how committed he was to following his dream. He got me to come here to speak tonight, didn t he? He s made a huge difference for a lot of students in a very short time. And he made quite an impression on me. Good luck, CTC rowers, you ve got a great future!! 5 CTC Mission Chicago Training Center, using the sport of competitive rowing, creates opportunities for underserved Chicago youth to challenge themselves to achieve their athletic and academic potential. The CTC s nurturing environment motivates students to become physically fit, to build teamwork, self-esteem and leadership skills, as well as develop and advance their educational and life goals. 15 The first thing I noticed with CTC was that everyone was treating each other like they were family. I used to have very low self-esteem... As days and practices passed, I started to notice that I could be really good at this sport... I gained more and more confidence that I could actually accomplish my goals. With the tutoring, I have gotten my grades up. Going to colleges and universities got me to start thinking more about my future. Rowing has given me a chance to demonstrate my leadership capacity... The basic principles of a leader emphasize duty, responsibility and moral character, all of which were triggered within me by CTC. When you re out there on the water, you learn to listen to your team members so the boat keeps moving... being a leader is not just giving orders, but at the same time, being open-minded to everyone. Before rowing, I expected everything instead of going out in the world and looking for my destiny. Coaches, events and teammates have strengthened my belief that Latinos can be someone in this world. Everything that we have been through and faced has been as a team and a family. The relationships we ve made with our peers and coaches will stay with us forever. The help that CTC has provided with tutoring from qualified people has helped us improve our grades and actually be called student-athletes, which in many sports is just a saying. Being a good student and being tutored will have a big impact in my life... it will open many doors for me to be successful. Rowing has brought on social and mental benefits to the point that I am hooked on the sport. It is not only my favorite extracurricular activity; it is the most beneficial for me and my future. In taking part in relays with other CTC rowers, I ve learned that when you work together, encourage one another to do the best you can, and don t give up, you are rewarded with the gift of self-accomplishment and victory. The kids thank you. Printed by CrossTech Communications Inc.
