Foreword Frankie Sulke Executive Director Children and Young People Starting secondary school is an important milestone in your child s life and you will want to be sure that you find the right school for them. This booklet has been designed to help you through the process, so that you are able to make well-informed decisions about applying for schools. In Lewisham, we are ambitious for all our children and young people and we have the very highest aspirations for their achievement at school. Schools in Lewisham have facilities which are second to none; they are vibrant and stimulating; and they have dedicated and skilled staff and headteachers. The quality of education in schools in Lewisham is high and continues to improve. There are very strong relationships between primary and secondary schools which ensures a child s transition is smooth and successful. Every secondary school in Lewisham offers a broad and balanced curriculum that will engage and inspire students, as well as provide flexibility to meet the needs of all students across the ability range. Each year more students are getting A* and A grades at GCSE and A-level and more are getting places at top universities. In this booklet, each secondary school headteacher gives a flavour of their school, highlighting their ethos and values and the many opportunities available to your child. You can find out more about each school on their websites. You will find important advice in this booklet about how to make your applications and we encourage you to read it carefully. In particular, you should make use of the school open days which are listed on page 8. You should visit as many schools as you can to see for yourself the fantastic opportunities they have to offer. Lewisham has very popular and oversubscribed schools so it is important that you fully understand the application process and make informed choices based on the admissions criteria set out for each school. You can apply for up to six schools, either in Lewisham or in another borough, but please remember to be realistic when making your preferences, as most decisions rely on how far you live from the school. We particularly recommend that you visit and apply to your most local school. Your local headteachers will be happy to talk with you and answer any questions you may have. We also recommend that you apply online via We know that your child will flourish and be successful in any secondary school in Lewisham and we wish them every success as they start this new chapter in their education. 4 Secondary schools in Lewisham

That s where we are setting our sights and we are getting there. Secondary schools in Lewisham have strong links with higher education providers, including Cambridge University and the University of London (Imperial College, King s College, Goldsmiths and the School of Oriental and African Studies). 7 Deciding which schools to apply for The first step is to decide which schools you would like to apply for. You can apply for up to six schools. Not all children can be offered their first preference school so you should find out about several schools. We strongly recommend that you look at your nearest school. Most schools in Lewisham are oversubscribed. It is therefore important that you include your nearest school as one of your preferences. Visiting schools All schools hold open days so you can visit them with your child. See page 8 for details of open days. Visiting schools is important because it gives you a chance to look around. You ll get a feel of the facilities and what each school offers, and have a chance to talk to headteachers, teachers and students too. You can read schools prospectuses and websites, but nothing replaces an actual visit. Because schools in Lewisham and their facilities have changed and improved in so many ways over the last few years, it is particularly important that you see schools for yourself rather than relying on outdated reputations. Admissions criteria You should use the admissions criteria to find out whether or not your child has a good chance of being offered a place at the schools you like. When there are more applicants for a school than places available, the school s admissions criteria will be applied to decide who should be offered a place. Therefore it is essential that you consider whether or not your child is likely to be offered a place before making your application. The most common criterion used is the distance from your home to the school, so we recommend that you name your nearest school as one of your preferences. Most secondary schools in Lewisham also give priority to a child with a brother or sister at the school, and others give preference to pupils of a particular faith. You can read all the criteria for schools in Lewisham on pages To find out about admissions criteria for schools outside Lewisham, you will need to look at secondary school booklets and websites from those areas. Banding The Council uses a banding system to make sure that the majority of secondary schools in Lewisham have a good mix of students of different abilities. For most schools in Lewisham, we will place your child in one of five bands (1A, 1B, 2A, 2B and 3) based on their ability, usually based on tests taken in Year 5. At each school, 20% of the places are allocated to students from each band. The Haberdashers Aske s Federation and Prendergast Hilly Fields College use their own banding systems. The Haberdashers Aske s Federation assesses students using its own test, which takes place after you have made your applications. It has more bands but still admits an even proportion of children across the school. Prendergast Hilly Fields College will use Lewisham Council s banding system but the proportion of places available will be determined by the proportion of applicants in each band of ability. This is known as school based banding. Contact the relevant schools for more information. Apply online at 7

How to apply Apply online at You can apply for up to six schools, which you list in order of preference. The schools can be in Lewisham or outside the borough. It is very important that you think carefully about the order in which you state your preferences because your child will only be offered a place at one school. The place you will be offered is the school that is ranked highest on your preference list that is able to offer a place according to its admissions criteria. If no school on your list of preferences is able to offer a place, you will be offered a place at the nearest available school in Lewisham that has vacancies. The final deadline for applications is Friday 31 October 2014, but we recommend that you submit your application by Friday 24 October If you cannot apply online, you can apply on a paper form, which you can pick up from Laurence House in Catford. You cannot apply both online and on paper. If you do so, we will only record the online application. The paper application will be null and void. How the admissions scheme works The coordinated admissions scheme is designed so that children are made one offer of a school place on national offer day (2 March 2015). The offer may be one of the schools named on your application or, if your child does not qualify for a place at any of the schools applied for, another school in Lewisham where there is a vacancy. You may apply for up to six maintained schools (not special schools or independent schools) on one application. You are required to rank each school in order of preference. Each school preference will be considered by the admissions authority for that school independently and a decision made on whether or not your child qualifies for a place at the school. Where an applicant can be offered more than one school applied for, Lewisham Council will use the applicant s ranking to determine which possible offer has been named the highest. Please note that the order of your preferences will not be passed to schools. Applying online You should apply online because: it is quick and easy your child s details are safe and secure you will get a confirmation after you have submitted your application you can change your preferences any time up to 11.59pm on 31 October 2014 you will get your offer by during the evening of 2 March 2015, whereas if you apply on paper you will get a letter which will arrive later. Applying online Applying online is secure, fast and convenient. To apply online you need to register at and create a password. This takes a few minutes and can be done any time from 1 September Apply online at 9

To apply online: 1. Register at any time from 1 September Fill in and submit the online application form before 11.59pm on 31 October If you are providing additional documentation to support your application, please scan and upload it with your application. If you cannot do this, please , post or bring the information to the Admissions and Appeals Team at Laurence House in Catford (contact details on page 13). If you are applying for a school that needs a supplementary information form, please get the form from the school and return it to the school before 31 October Do not send it to the Council. 3. After you submit your application you will get an with a reference number that looks like this: E If you do not get an with a reference number, it means your form has not been submitted. You are not asked to include your child s banding when you apply online. We will collect this information from your child s primary school. For technical help with online applications or if you forget your password, contact the London Grid for Learning on: support@eadmissions.org.uk Tel: (select option 4) Applying on paper We recommend that you apply online if possible. However, if you are unable to do this you can apply using Lewisham Council s common application form, as long as you are a Lewisham resident. You can collect a copy from Laurence House, Catford Road, Catford. Please return the form to the Admissions and Appeals Team (see contact details on page 13). If you hand-deliver the form to Laurence House, you will be given a receipt. If you send the form in the post, make sure you put the correct postage on the envelope. If you are using a large envelope, you must use a special large envelope stamp, or Royal Mail will not deliver your form. You should also get a free certificate of posting from the post office and keep this safe, along with a photocopy of the form, in case we do not receive it. Filling in the application form online or on paper Here are some tips that will help you make your application. You will be asked for the same information whether you apply online or on paper, but the questions might be presented in a different order. For further help filling in your application please ask your primary school headteacher or call the Admissions and Appeals Team at the Council on Your child s details Make sure you correctly spell your child s name and provide your child s permanent home address, which must be in the borough of Lewisham. The child s name must be exactly the same as on their birth certificate, unless it has been legally changed, in which case a copy of the legal document must be provided. If you move at any time during the application process, you must let the Admissions and Appeals Team know immediately. Please provide written evidence of your new address, such as a copy of your new tenancy agreement or a solicitor s letter confirming completion of a house purchase. If you move before 12 December 2014, we will use your new permanent home address to work out your offer or you can make a new application. If you move after 12 December 2014 but before 2 March 2015, your offer will be based on your previous permanent home address. The address you give must be the child s permanent home address, not a temporary address or one that you have rented in order to increase your child s chances of getting into a particular school. We will check the address you give against our records and may ask you for evidence that this is the child s permanent home address. We will withdraw an offer of a place if you provide false information. Your details Only give the name(s) of parents/carers who live 10 Secondary schools in Lewisham

at the same address as the child. If your child is not at a primary school in Lewisham, please provide evidence with your application that you have parental responsibility for the child and are therefore eligible to make an application, as well as evidence that you permanently live at the address you have applied from. These could include: your current council tax statement or a tenancy agreement a letter from the Child Benefit Agency showing both your name and your child s name to show that you are in receipt of benefits for the child residence orders (or other court orders) if relevant the child s full birth certificate. If parents who are not living together share the care of their child, we will normally accept that the child lives with the parent who has parental responsibility and is receiving child benefit and child tax credit. We may ask for evidence of this. Order of preferences Your child will only be offered one place so it is very important that you think carefully about the order in which you list the schools you are applying for. You are not guaranteed a place at one of the schools you apply for and we strongly recommend that you list your most local school as one of your preferences. Do not list any school that you would not accept if it is offered. Name of school and DfE number Please make sure you enter the correct school name. This is particularly important because some schools work in federation and will have similar names e.g. Prendergast schools in Lewisham and Harris acadamies in other boroughs. If you are applying on a paper form, also give the school s unique DfE number (see pages 14 27). If you are applying to schools outside Lewisham, please get the DfE number from that school or the council for that area. The DfE number will clearly identify which school you are applying for. Supporting evidence In some situations, we need to see further evidence that your child meets the admissions criteria. These include: a letter from a hospital consultant demonstrating that the school you have applied for is the only one which can meet the child or the family s specific needs if you are applying on medical grounds a letter from a social worker demonstrating the same if you are applying on social grounds or the child is in public care the adoption order for a child who has been adopted (see below for more information about when we can give priority to adopted children). You must tick the box for every school for which you are providing supporting evidence. Note that in Lewisham, only Prendergast Hilly Fields College and Prendergast Vale College give priority to children of staff, and schools outside Lewisham may or may not do so. Please check the admissions criteria for the school(s) you are applying for. A child of UK service personnel may qualify for priority and proof of this will be needed. Either upload your documents with your online application or or send them to schooladmissions@lewisham. gov.uk. If you are applying on paper, attach them to your application form. Children in public care or adopted from public care These children get priority and should get their first preference of school. If the child is in public care, or has been adopted and was in care in England or Wales immediately beforehand, the allocated social worker must provide a statement about the child s legal status. If the child is adopted, please provide the adoption order with your application. For advice on the application process, carers should contact the Admissions and Appeals Team at the Council on Check your application Please note that we will carry out checks on the information you have provided. If we find that false information has been used to gain admission to a school, the offer of a place will be withdrawn. Please note that you are entirely responsible for submitting your application and any supplementary forms on time. Lewisham Council accepts no responsibility for applications that are received late. The best way to make sure your application is received on time is to apply online before 31 October Apply online at 11

Supplementary information forms Please note that supplementary information forms must be returned direct to the schools, not to Lewisham Council. Some schools need to collect information that is not included in the application form. They will use this information to see if students meet their admissions criteria: for example, a faith school will ask for evidence of church attendance. The following schools in Lewisham require supplementary information forms: Bonus Pastor Catholic College Haberdashers Aske s Hatcham College Haberdashers Aske s Knights Academy Prendergast Hilly Fields College St Matthew Academy Trinity Lewisham Church of England School. You should get supplementary information forms from the school in question or from the school s website and return the form direct to the school by Friday 31 October Applying to an independent school Independent schools are not included in the arrangements described in this booklet. Instead, you need to apply directly to the school. Late applications If you move into Lewisham after the closing date of 31 October 2014 you can still apply for a school place until 10am on 12 December You will need to include evidence of the move, such as a tenancy agreement or confirmation of house purchase which includes the date of the move. If you are thinking of moving to Lewisham but have not yet confirmed the date, you can apply for Lewisham schools using the common application form provided by your current local authority. If you apply after 10am on 12 December 2014 we will not consider your application until after 2 March younger child (born between 1 September 2004 and 31 August 2005) providing that: the application is supported by the child s primary school headteacher and an educational psychologist, confirming that the child is academically outstanding and sufficiently physically and emotionally mature to cope with the demands of secondary school the parent agrees in writing that their child will transfer to secondary school with the older cohort, regardless of the outcome of their applications, and will not be able to apply the following year. Parents must consider the implications of an early transfer. From 2015, students will be required to stay in learning or training until at least their 18th birthday. Later transfer In very exceptional circumstances, Lewisham Council will consider a request for a transfer for a child born between 1 September 2002 and 31 August 2003 providing that: the application is supported by the child s primary headteacher and an educational psychologist confirming, for example, the child has learning delay or difficulty and their social maturity is well below that of their peers, or that the child has missed part of a year due to ill health the parent agrees in writing that their child will transfer to secondary school with the younger cohort regardless of the outcome of their applications and has not participated in the transfer scheme the year before. In cases described above, parents must consider the implications of later transfer. Please note that Lewisham Council s Admissions and Appeals Team facilitates the transfer arrangements and is unable to influence a school s decision to accept or decline an application for a child applying out of year group. Early transfer In very exceptional circumstances, Lewisham Council will consider a request for an early transfer for a 12 Secondary schools in Lewisham

What happens next 1. Confirmation of application If you have applied online, you will receive an automated confirmation. If you have made a paper application, Lewisham Council will write to you on 21 November 2014 to confirm the schools you have applied for. If you do not receive this letter, please contact the Admissions and Appeals Team as it may mean we have not received your application. If this happens, you will need to provide a photocopy of your application and proof of postage. 2. Your offer If you applied online, you will receive an during the evening of 2 March 2015 informing you of your child s offer of secondary school. If you applied on paper, your offer will be posted to you first class on 2 March Please note that first class post does not guarantee next-day delivery and council staff will not be able to give you the result over the telephone. If you are a Lewisham resident and you cannot be offered a place at any of the schools on your list, we will offer you a place at another school in Lewisham that has a vacancy. After the application deadline, you will not be allowed to add to or change the order of your preferences. 3. Accepting your offer If you applied online, please log into your account to accept your offer. You will need your login details and secure password to do this. If you applied on paper, you must return the acceptance slip which will accompany your offer letter. 4. Appeals You can appeal against any decision not to offer your child a place at a school. Your offer letter will tell you how to get an appeal form. Lewisham Council will deal with appeals for Lewisham community schools, while schools which are their own admission authority (e.g. faith schools or academies) will deal with their own appeals. You need to complete the appeal form, stating your case and explaining why you feel your child should have been offered a place at the school. Attach supporting evidence to be considered by the appeal panel. 5. Reallocation lists If you are not offered your first preference school, we will assume that you wish to go on the reallocation list for any schools you named as a higher preference than the school offered, unless you tell us otherwise. Your position on the list will be determined by the school s admissions criteria and there are separate lists for each band (see page 7 for an explanation of the banding system). If places become available at a school they will be offered to children on the reallocation list. You will not be able to go on reallocation lists for schools which were a lower preference than the school offered. If you apply to one of the following schools and are not successful, the school will write to you shortly after 2 March 2015 explaining the school s procedure for appeals and reallocation of places: Addey and Stanhope School Bonus Pastor Catholic College Haberdashers Aske s Hatcham College Haberdashers Aske s Knights Academy Prendergast Hilly Fields College Prendergast Vale College St Matthew Academy Trinity Lewisham Church of England School. If you move to the area and were not living in the borough at the closing date, your child will be included in a reallocation list, placed in criteria order. 14 Addey and Stanhope School Educating the whole child At Addeys we are educating the whole child. Exam results are obviously very important and at Addeys these are outstanding, but we believe education is so much more than that. We value a really broad education which reflects our students interests and needs, particularly with a view to their future careers. We are delighted to have opened a new sixth form so our students can learn with us until they go on to university, an apprenticeship or employment. We offer a wide range of visits, trips as well as extracurricular sports and arts activities. Our students take part in book groups, essay-writing and debating competitions as well as bands, sports teams and the annual school play. The school has a very strong ethos and we value working closely with our families to develop the cultural, social and moral aspects of education. We keep our parents informed when their children are doing well or if there are problems, because we know that if school and families work together closely we will achieve the best for each child. We are a small school where there are very close relationships between staff and children. Staff work incredibly hard to ensure every child achieves the very best they can. Behaviour is outstanding and our children are happy, secure and enjoy school. We know each child individually and have the highest expectations of them all in terms of behaviour and academic outcomes. As they tell us, we are their second family. 16 Conisborough College A Colfe s Associate School An oversubscribed, outstanding school For five consecutive years, Conisborough College students have achieved the school s best ever results and this year we expect student attainment to reach new heights. Over this period the proportion of students achieving the top grades has more than doubled. Staff, governors, students and their families have worked together to help establish the college as one of the most improved schools in the country. I am extremely proud to be the head of a school where this transformation has taken place. Our students have access to a fantastic new building with state-of-the-art facilities and are determined to make the very most of the opportunities this huge investment has given them. Students also benefit greatly from the college s partnership with Colfe s. Our students are extremely ambitious and this association offers them a clear pathway to a leading independent school and university. The scholarship programme enables our highest achieving students to secure a place in Colfe s sixth form. Intervention activities in all year groups are designed to support them through this process. We challenge students to develop into happy, successful young adults who are keen to make a positive contribution to their community. Our students are justifiably proud of the progress that they are making and the part they have played in making their college the outstanding community school in the area. 17 Deptford Green School A great place to learn It is an extremely exciting time to be joining Deptford Green School. Our award-winning new building offers our staff and students the best educational facilities in London. It s an inspirational environment to be working in and impacts on all aspects of students learning. The school has a team of staff, students and parents who are determined to make the school outstanding across all areas. We celebrated some of our best GCSE exam results in autumn 2013 and the latest data tracking confirms results will rise further in There is a real passion for learning and a strong commitment to the local community. Students are keen to make a positive contribution as citizens of London whilst pursuing an academic pathway that will lead to the top universities. We understand the importance of making the transition from primary to secondary as successful as possible. A transition teacher is dedicated to a streamed class group in Year 7 with a maximum of 22 in each class and teaches the students English, literacy, citizenship and humanities. As students have the same teacher for a significant proportion of their timetable they build strong relationships, make quick progress and a bridge is made between primary and secondary approaches to learning. We expect students to take responsibility for their own learning and to play their part in ensuring that Deptford Green is a vibrant and happy community in which everyone s learning can flourish.
