4 Foreword Foreword A message from the cabinet member for Children and Schools at Southwark Council Dear parents and carers Starting secondary school is a huge milestone for you and your child. If your child is due to start secondary school in 2016, I hope that this brochure will help to clarify the process of deciding which school is right for your child by providing useful information about the different types of secondary schools in Southwark. I regularly visit our secondary schools, and I can assure you that by choosing to send your child to a Southwark school, your child will go to a school that maintains some of the highest standards in the country. Southwark s secondary schools are currently ranked in the top ten in England - a leap of 23 places from the previous year. Southwark s GCSE results are improving significantly and I am a firm believer in providing the best education possible for your child. That s why the council is committed to working with all secondary schools in Southwark to ensure over 70 per cent of students achieve at least five good GCSEs. Applications for secondary school places will only be accepted online. To access an online application form, please visit If you don t have access to the internet, or feel you need assistance in completing an application, please go to one of our Southwark libraries or a MySouthwark customer service point where someone will be more than happy to help you. Last year, parents found our apply online sessions very helpful, so please go along to one of these sessions if you need help with applying online. It s important that when you select the six preferred schools you would like your child to attend, that you read through this brochure carefully so that you understand what each school or academy offers, as some may specialise in arts, maths, languages, science or digital technology. I would also advise you to attend one of the open days so that you can tour the school and meet the teachers. To apply online visit n You must complete (and return directly to the school) the supplementary information form (SIF) if the school you have listed as one of your preferences requires this. Please contact the school to check their individual closing date. Saturday 31 October 2015, 11.59pm Tuesday 1 March 2016 n Closing date for submitting online applications. n You must ensure that we have received your online application alongside any additional supporting information by this date. We strongly recommend that you submit your application by Friday 23 October 2105 so that we receive it before the half term holiday and can contact you if necessary. n Offer letters will be posted by first class to all parents/carers who have applied on time. n Online applicants will be able to view their offer details in the evening at Tuesday 15 March 2016 Appeals n Should you wish to reject the offer of a school place allocated to your child, you must complete and return the notification slip attached to your offer letter by this date. n No action is required if you want to accept the school place offered to your child and you are a Southwark resident. n Check dates of appeal hearings with individual schools. These are important deadlines which you will need to keep in mind. If you miss these dates, your chances of being offered a place at a preferred school will be reduced. 5

6 Finding the right school for your child Finding the right school for your child Start finding out about schools now n Before you decide which schools to apply for and your order of preference, we strongly advise that you read the guidance in this brochure. n You will find information about schools in Southwark either within this brochure, from the schools directly, online or by contacting Southwark Council s school admissions team on n You can also talk to teachers and other parents/carers whilst thinking about what is important to you and your child. Look at school brochures/websites Visit as many schools as possible n Parents and carers are strongly encouraged to visit schools to see what each has to offer. Please see pages 7 and 8 for open day/evening dates. n If you are interested in applying for a school, look at their oversubscription criteria in detail before completing the online application form and listing it as a preference. If your child meets some or most of a school s criteria, they will have a greater chance of being offered a place over another child who doesn t meet the criteria. n If you are applying to a secondary school that uses banding as part of its criteria, your child will be required to take a test. 9 APPLICATIONS Applying for a secondary school place When can my child start secondary school? If your child was born between 1 September 2004 and 31 August 2005, your child is due to start secondary school in September You must start applying from September 2015 and submit your application before the closing date on 31 October Different types of secondary schools in Southwark There are three types of mainstream secondary schools in Southwark. The schools all follow the national curriculum and are regularly inspected by the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted). For children starting school in Southwark there are 19 secondary schools to choose from. Voluntary aided schools There are three voluntary aided secondary schools in Southwark. The school s governing body is responsible for their admissions and decides how pupils are admitted. Academies There are 14 academies in Southwark. The Academy Trust is responsible for school admissions and decides how pupils are admitted. University Technical Colleges (UTC) and Studio Schools University Technical Colleges and Studio Schools are opening in some areas to provide technically oriented courses of study or work skill based learning for 14 to 19 year olds. Southwark will coordinate applications for residents for UTCs and Studio Schools in neighbouring local authorities. Currently there are no UTCs or Studio Schools in Southwark. Please see and for further information. All of Southwark s secondary schools are their own admissions authority and are responsible for setting their own admission arrangements. Southwark Council s school admissions team coordinates admission applications to all schools. In cases where a decision not to offer a place has been made, parents/carers will need to contact each school or academy for further details. Admission authorities are responsible for ensuring that their arrangements are fair, clear and compliant with current regulations. If you have a query about a particular arrangement, you must raise it directly with the relevant admission authority e.g. the school. If your query remains unresolved and it relates to a Southwark school, please contact our admissions compliance officer by at admissions.compliance@southwark.gov.uk Applying for a secondary school place Free school There is one secondary free school in Southwark and another one proposed to open in September The school s governing body is responsible for school admissions and decides how pupils are admitted. You may also raise any objections to admission arrangements with the Office of the Schools Adjudicator by 15 May Please see page 46 for details on how to contact them. 9

10 How to apply How to apply Information about applying Before you start applying there are a few things you need to know. n If you are a Southwark resident you must apply online by visiting n If you live in another borough you must complete the admission application for the borough in which you live, even if you would like to apply for a school in Southwark. n When applying for a school place you may express a preference for up to six schools whether they are in Southwark or in another borough. n Some schools need to collect information that is not included on the admission application. They request this information using a supplementary information form (SIF). The school will use the information you provide by comparing it against their published admissions criteria. For example, a faith school will require evidence of church attendance. n You must complete a SIF if the school you have listed as one of your preferences requires this. Please view the individual school s page within this brochure to check if a SIF is required. n The SIF will be available from the school and must be completed and returned directly to the school. Please check the individual deadline date for returning the SIF with each school. n The online application will not be valid unless it is submitted by 11:59pm on 31 October You will then receive an application reference number by confirming that your application has been submitted successfully. If you do not receive this please submit your application again as it will not have been received. n Where a SIF is required alongside an admission application, your application may be invalid or your chance of a place reduced unless both the forms have been completed and received at the correct addresses by the closing dates. Please note that you will also need to sign the SIF before sending it to the school. When can I start applying online? n You can start applying online from 1 September 2015 at n If you do not have a computer at home or do not have internet access, Southwark Council libraries and MySouthwark customer service points offer free access to the internet with staff on hand to help. To find your local library or MySouthwark customer service point, contact Southwark Council s customer service centre on How do I apply online? Online school admission applications are quick and easy to do. All you will need is an address to register with which should take approximately five minutes. Don t worry if you do not have an address. You can sign up for a free account by reading our leaflet Registering for an account which can be requested from the school admissions team by calling

11 APPLICATIONS Follow the steps below and you re ready to start your child s online application. Step 1 n To apply online go to n Click on n You will be taken to the eadmissions webpage. Step 2 Registering to apply online This is the first time I am applying online using eadmissions. What should I do? n If this is the first time you are applying for a school place on the eadmissions website, you must register to apply online. It is important that the person registering has parental responsibility for the child and that they both live at the same address that has been stated on the online application. n You will need to click on Register to apply online. Once you have registered, you will be sent an with your user name and instructions. Follow these instructions and you will be sent another with your password. n The will also contain a web link which will take you to the eadmissions log in page to start your application. I have applied online before using eadmissions. What should I do? n If you have used the eadmissions website before to apply for a school place for any of your children you do not need to register again. You will need to click on Login to an existing account or User login and log in with the same user name and password that you used when you previously applied online. n If you wish to change any of your personal details e.g. your address, or phone numbers please click on Edit your details. You can then make the necessary changes but you must ensure you click Save and continue. n If you have forgotten your user name and password you must contact the technical support team by telephone on (option 1) who will be able to assist you. Step 3 Completing the application n Each page on your screen will explain what you need to do as clearly as possible with a Help button at the top of the page which you can click on if you need further guidance. n Please ensure that the online application is fully completed and that you enter the details correctly. Failure to tick certain boxes, e.g. the sibling box or the social/medical box, will mean that the sibling or social/medical criteria may not be identified when your application is being processed. n You must ensure that you click Save and continue each time you complete a page of the application. 12 How to apply When and how do I submit the application? n When you have completed your application you must submit it by the closing date of 31 October n You will not be able to sign the application. However, the registration process has a number of security measures aimed to verify the identity of the parent/carer. n Use the Submit Application button to submit your application. Once you have submitted your online application the system will show as Submitted and show the date, time and version number of the submitted application. n You will also receive an confirming details of your application and will be given a unique application reference number similar to this: E If you do not receive such a number it means your application was not submitted successfully and you must try submitting it again as the school admissions team will not have received it. Southwark Council cannot accept responsibility for application forms which are not received by the closing date. 12

13 APPLICATIONS Can I change my preferences once I have submitted my application? Important information How to apply n If you have submitted your online application before the closing date you are still able to make changes to it. If you do go back and make further changes you must save and submit your application again before the closing date. n After the closing date Southwark Council s school admissions team will accept the last submitted version of your application. If you feel you may need further help and advice in completing an online application why not come along to our Apply online information sessions? These will be held during the autumn term at schools across Southwark and our school admission officers will be available to give you one to one advice. Please check the individual deadline date for returning the SIF with each school. n If you are providing additional information to support your application such as a medical letter, make sure you upload this as an attachment with your online application or submit this by post to the school admissions team before the closing date of 31 October Please see the back cover for the school admissions postal address. n It is important that you keep a copy of your final completed application and note down the reference number as you will need it to get the results of your application when they become available online during the evening of 1 March n If you experience any technical difficulties or have any questions regarding the eadmissions website you can contact the London Grid for Learning, which administers the website on and select option 1. 13

14 What happens after the closing date? What happens after the closing date? How the decision to offer a school place is made n Each of your preferences will be considered individually under each school s oversubscription criteria. n If you have listed any schools outside of Southwark, we will send your preferences to those boroughs electronically. n All of Southwark s secondary schools are non community, the governing body of each school applies their oversubscription criteria and decides on which applicants receive a school place. To view a summary of each school s oversubscription criteria please view page 17 onwards. n Once all schools have prioritised applications based on their oversubscription criteria, they will provide a ranked list to Southwark Council s schools admissions team. n If more than one offer can be made from your list of preferred schools, we will check your application to see which one is ranked highest and offer you that place. If only one school can be offered from your list, this is the school we will offer. Any schools listed as a lower preference will be automatically withdrawn so that these places can be offered to other applicants. n Your child will only receive one offer of a school place. n If your child is a Southwark resident and it is not possible to offer him/her a school you have listed as a preference, we will offer an alternative place at a school with capacity. This is likely to be the nearest Southwark school to the child s home which has a vacancy. Offer of a school place n You will be able to view the results of your application on the eadmissions website during the evening of 1 March You will also be sent a letter by first class post on 1 March 2016 which will provide more information regarding the decision and what to do next. n Application results will not be provided over the telephone. n Please note that the offer of a school place is conditional until proof of address has been confirmed by the school. n Original copies of the following will be required Child benefit documentation, or if you are no longer eligible to receive child benefit, a letter from the HMRC confirming that you were previously in receipt of child benefit. Council tax bill One other proof of address, e.g. TV licence, bank statement, credit/store card statement Respond to your offer of a school place n If you wish to accept your child s offer of a school place you do not need to inform us. Your offer will be automatically accepted if you are a Southwark resident and forwarded to the allocated school after 15 March n If you are rejecting your child s offer of a school place, you must complete the slip attached to your offer letter and return it to Southwark Council s school admissions team by 15 March 2016 so that other children may be offered the place. You must also inform us in writing of any other alternative suitable arrangement for education that has been made for your child. n If you do not notify us of an alternative arrangement for your child s education by 15 March 2016 we will forward their name to the school that has been offered/allocated in his/her offer letter. Important information If the council or an admission authority has reason to suspect that a family does not live at the address stated, we will carry out an investigation. Should we discover that a parent is making a fraudulent claim the offer of a place will be withdrawn. 14

15 APPLICATIONS If you are not offered a school of your preference Waiting lists n If it is not possible to offer a place at one of your preferred Southwark schools we will allocate an alternative school. Your child s name will automatically be put on to the waiting lists of schools which were named as a higher preference on your application. n Southwark Council s school admissions team hold waiting lists for all Southwark schools until 31 August n You may also ask for your child s name to be added to the waiting list of any out of borough schools listed on your application form. n The school admissions code requires admission authorities to hold their waiting list strictly in order of the priorities of their published oversubscription criteria. Please note, if your child's name is added to a school's waiting list, their position may go up or down the list depending on whether any late applicants have been added and how the oversubscription criteria applies to these children (i.e. if a late applicant meets a higher admissions criterion than others already on the list, they will be given a higher waiting list position). This then ensures that if a vacancy arises at a school at any time, the admissions criteria is used to determine which child is offered a place from the waiting list. n If a conditional offer made from a waiting list is not accepted within five working days it will be withdrawn and offered to the next child on the list. n If you change address whilst on a waiting list, evidence of the new address will be required when measuring for the home to school distance criterion. Appeals n You can appeal against the decision not to offer your child a place at a preferred school. Please contact the school directly for further information. n You have the right to appeal to an independent appeals panel for each school you made an unsuccessful application to. n Details of your right of appeal will be included in your offer letter. n Each school sets their own deadline for when you can submit your appeal paperwork. Please contact the school directly for further information. n More detailed information about the appeals process can be found by contacting Southwark Council s schools admissions team on or by obtaining a copy of the School Admissions Appeals Code from the Department for Education (DfE), contact details on page 45. Late applications n Applications received after 31 October 2015 will not be considered for a place until after the initial offer of places on 1 March n However, under exceptional circumstances Southwark Council s school admissions team can accept a late application where it considers there are exceptional circumstances. For example, if you have moved into Southwark between 31 October 2015 and 11 December 2015 your application may be accepted subject to valid proof. Confirmation of the move including the date will be required. n If you are submitting a late application you must complete a paper form as the online application system will not be available after the closing date. You can download the form at You can also request the form from the school admissions team by calling n All other late applications received after 31 October 2015 will not be considered for a school place until after the initial offer of places on 1 March Change of address after you have submitted your application form n If your child s home address has changed after you have submitted your application and before an offer of a school place has been made, you must notify Southwark Council s school admissions team immediately. n The school will then need to process your child s application again in order to apply their oversubscription criteria. 16 Southwark Information, Advice and Support Team Southwark Information, Advice and Support Team Special Educational Needs and Disability and school preference advice The role of this team is to give parents access to confidential and impartial information, advice and support so parents and young people can make informed decisions. This is achieved by working in partnership with parents and young people, providing information, services and training, working with relevant agencies and ensuring parents and young people s views influence local policy and practice. What you can expect from the team: n a response to enquiries by phone, or letter within five working days n the team telephone line will be open between 9am and 5pm, or if the phone is busy you will be able to leave a message on the confidential answer phone n regular sessions held during term time where parents can make an appointment or drop in to meet them to discuss education, health or social care issues n annual secondary transfer events and information sessions held for parents and young people n information sessions held for parents and young people n advice and support for parents and young people with admission appeals for primary and secondary school.
