2 DC Public Charter School Recruitment Expo The D. C. Public Charter School Board s mission is to provide quality public school options for DC students, families, and communities through: A comprehensive application review process; Effective oversight; Meaningful support; and Active engagement of its stakeholders / The mission of the DC Association of Chartered Public Schools is to increase opportunities and outcomes for students by supporting the development, growth, and sustainability of quality charter schools in Washington, DC. The Association was created by and for DC public charter schools to serve as their collective voice. It focuses on three key areas, Policy and Advocacy, School Quality and Public Engagement / / FOCUS promotes public school reform in the District of Columbia through the development of high quality public charter schools.

3 Acknowledgments The D.C. Public Charter School Recruitment Expo was organized by a collaboration of the D.C. Public Charter School Board, the D.C. Association of Chartered Public Schools and Friends of Choice in Urban Schools (FOCUS). Financial contributions from the vendors listed in this booklet and participating in the Vendor Fair have made it possible. The Expo is intended to serve multiple purposes: To offer parents & teachers a one-stop opportunity to learn about the diverse array of charter school options available in Washington, D.C. To support charter schools efforts to recruit students and highly qualified teachers. To expose charter school leaders to vendor resources that will support the independent operation of their schools. DC Public Charter School Recruitment Expo 1

6 How to Choose and Enroll in a D.C. Charter School Parents interested in enrolling their students in a D.C. public charter school have many options. Charter schools are available to all D.C. residents, tuition free, without regard to neighborhood boundaries or previous academic achievement. Parents can simply identify the school/s that seem to meet their students needs, arrange a visit, and if they like what they see and hear, complete an enrollment application. Charter schools are non-selective, and accept all D.C. residents, based on grades served and space availability. When there are more students applying than there are spaces available, charter schools must hold a lottery that randomly selects students for the available spaces. Each charter school is unique and independently-operated. Parents are encouraged to learn about each school s focus, size and teaching approach, and to think seriously about what environment is the best match for their child s interests and needs. Not every charter school is a good fit for every child. Charter schools offer a diverse array of specialty programs, such as math, science and technology; the performing arts; government, law and public policy; character and leadership; foreign language immersion; Latin and humanities; single-sex classrooms; and the nation s only public boarding high school, among many other options. Most charter schools prepare students for college, while others prepare students for vocational careers. A school might serve as few as 50 students or as many as Some are highly structured and others are more creatively inclined. A few schools target special populations and communities. Students are best served when parents educate themselves about all of the options and find the right fit for their children. With the growing number of charter schools there are more choices and spaces available every year. However, waiting until August or September to get started could prove disappointing, as application deadlines will approach and spaces will fill quickly. 4 DC Public Charter School Recruitment Expo

7 Suggested steps for choosing and enrolling your child in a charter school: 1. Narrow your choices based on the schools that will serve your child s grade this fall. 2. Think about whether your child would perform better in a smaller school with more attention from teachers and administrators, or a larger school where there may be more course offerings and resources; narrow down the options based on size. 3. Determine if your child would prefer a specialty program, or has a special talent or interest in certain subjects; look at the schools that offer those kinds of programs. 4. Think about how important a school s location is to your family s situation. Will you or your child be able to get to and from school on time based on the travel requirements? 5. Plan to attend an open house, or several, based on your narrowed down choices. 6. Be sure to find out the application deadlines for each of your school options. 7. Complete applications for your favorite schools BEFORE the application deadlines. Find out when the lottery will be held if there are more applications than spaces available. 8. Look for mailed notices of confirmation of space availability in the mail, or call to find out. Be sure to complete the enrollment process by bringing the necessary documents before the enrollment deadlines. 9. If a student is not selected through a lottery process, be sure to elect to be on the waiting list. Often parents apply to more than one school and spaces may become available after the first day of school. DC Public Charter School Recruitment Expo 5
