Background A Small Form Factor Pluggable (SFP) is a compact transceiver that can operate at speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second and is available in copper and fiber. Inserting a 1 Gigabit Ethernet (GE) SFP copper transceiver converts the SFP port of the appliance to a 1000BASE-T port. However, inserting a 1 GE SFP fiber transceiver converts the SFP port of the appliance to a 1000BASE-X port. 1 GE SFP transceivers are used in the following NetScaler appliance models: G 7500 MPX Page 1

2 9500 MPX 9700 MPX MPX MPX MPX Similarly, a 10 Gigabit Small Form Factor Pluggable (XFP or SFP+) is a compact optical transceiver that can operate at speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second. The 10 GE SFP+ ports share a common physical form factor with the 1 GE SFP ports. This enables higher port density than the 10 GE XFP ports. Additionally, the 10 GE SFP+ transceivers are smaller and use less power than the 10 GE XFP transceivers. You use a fiber-optic cable to connect to an SFP+ or XFP port. 10 GE XFP transceivers are used in the following NetScaler appliance models: G MPX 7000 MPX SFP+ transceivers are used in the following NetScaler MPX appliance models: G G G G By default, auto-negotiation is enabled on the SFP and XFP or SFP+ ports to which you insert the 1 GE SFP, 10GE XFP or SFP+ transceiver. As soon as a link between the port and the network is established, the mode is matched on both ends of the cable. For SFP+ transceivers, the speed is also auto-negotiated. The 10 GE SFP+ transceiver automatically negotiates a speed of 1 GE if the other end of the fiber-optic cable is attached to a 1 GE SFP port of a switch. Page 2

Two types of optics, such as short reach of 850nm wavelength or long reach of 1310nm wavelength, are available based on data center requirements for distance and speed. The Return Materials Authorization (RMA) warranty states that the 1 GE SFP and 10 GE XFP or SFP+ transceivers are covered for one year after the date on which you purchased the NetScaler appliance to which the transceivers are inserted. To extend support for transceivers beyond the one year warranty, you can purchase the NetScaler Hardware Maintenance Agreement. You can also purchase spare transceivers from Citrix Systems to replace the same if it fails. Caution! Only 1 GE SFP, 10 GE XFP, and SFP+ transceivers provided by Citrix Systems are supported on NetScaler appliances. Attempting to install third-party SFP, XFP, and SFP+ transceivers on the NetScaler appliance voids the warranty. Transceivers supplied by Citrix are interchangeable among NetScaler hardware platforms. You can install a 1 GE SFP transceiver from one appliance, to the SFP port of another appliance, and a 10 GE SFP+ transceiver to the SFP+ port of another appliance. Page 3

Do not install a 10 GE fiber SFP+ transceiver in a 1 GE SFP port, and vice versa. The size of the socket enables you to install 1 GE SFP as well as 10 GE SFP+ transceivers. However, the NIC does Page 5

6 not recognize the mismatched transceiver, the interface is not available, and the port LED lights are not switched on. The preceding information does not hold good for copper SFPs. 1GE copper transceiver can be installed to the 10GE SFP+ port, but the speed will be 1G irrespective of the port (1 GE SFP or 10 GE SFP+ ). 1 GE copper transceiver does not auto-negotiate down to 10/100 Mbps. The following table provides a quick reference for the compatibility of various transceivers and SFP ports available on NetScaler. Transceivers SFP Ports 10 GE 1 GE Fiber 1 GE Copper 10 GE Supported Not Supported Supported 1 GE Fiber Not Supported Supported Not Supported 1 GE Copper Not Supported Not Supported Supported Replacing a Copper or Fiber Transceiver on a NetScaler Appliance To replace a copper or fiber transceiver on a NetScaler appliance, complete the following procedures, as appropriate: Replacing a 1 GE SFP Transceiver Replacing a 10 GE XFP or SFP+ Transceiver Replacing a 1 GE SFP Transceiver The SFP transceivers are hot-swappable on the NetScaler appliance series 9010, 10010, and The 1G SFP transceiver is hot-swappable with NetScaler release 9.3 build 47.5 or later. For more details refer Citrix edocs - Hardware FAQs. For NetScaler release previous to 9.3 build 47.5, the SFP transceivers are not hotswappable on the NetScaler MPX appliances. You must shutdown a NetScaler MPX appliance before removing or inserting a transceiver in a NetScaler MPX appliance. Note: Frequent installation and removal of transceivers shortens the life span of the transceivers. Follow the removal procedure carefully to avoid damaging the 1 GE SFP transceiver of the appliance. 7 To replace a 1 GE SFP transceiver, complete the following procedures: Removing a 1 GE SFP Transceiver Installing a 1 GE SFP Transceiver Removing a 1 GE SFP Transceiver To remove a 1 GE SFP transceiver, complete the following procedure: 1. Disconnect the cable from the 1 GE SFP transceiver. If you are using a fiber optic cable, ensure that you immediately replace the dust cap on the cable. Important: Do not look directly into fiber optic transceivers or cables. These emit laser beams that can damage your eyes. 2. Unlock the 1 GE SFP transceiver. 3. Hold the 1GE SFP transceiver between your thumb and index finger and slowly pull it out of the port. If you are removing a fiber 1 GE SFP transceiver, then ensure that you replace the dust cap on the cable immediately. 4. Put the 1 GE SFP transceiver in its original box or another appropriate container. Installing a 1 GE SFP Transceiver To install a 1 GE SFP transceiver, complete the following procedure: 1. Carefully, remove the 1 GE SFP transceiver from its box. Important: Do not look directly into fiber optic transceivers or cables. These emit laser beams that can damage your eyes. 2. Align the 1 GE SFP transceiver to the front of the SFP transceiver port available on the front panel of the appliance, as shown in the following image: Page 7

8 3. Hold the 1 GE SFP transceiver between your thumb and index finger and insert it in the 1 GE SFP transceiver port, pressing it in until you hear the transceiver snap into place. 4. Lock the transceiver. 5. If you are installing the transceiver in a NetScaler MPX appliance, then ensure that you restart the appliance. This enables the interface to recognize the newly inserted transceiver. 6. Verify that the LED is green and blinks twice, which indicates that the transceiver is functioning, as expected. 7. If you are using a fiber 1 GE SFP transceiver, remove the dust caps attached to the transceiver and the cable only when you are ready to insert the cable. Replacing a 10 GE XFP or SFP+ Transceiver The 10G SFP+ transceiver is hot-swappable with NetScaler release 9.3 build 57.5 or later. For more details refer to Citrix edocs - Hardware FAQs. For NetScaler release previous to 9.3 build 57.5, you must restart the NetScaler appliance following insertion of a 10 GE XFP or SFP+ transceiver. Note: Frequent installation and removal of transceivers shortens the life span of the transceivers. Follow the removal procedure carefully to avoid damaging the 10 GE XFP and SFP+ transceiver of the appliance. Page 8

9 To replace a 10 GE XFP or SFP+ transceiver, complete the following procedures: Removing a 10 GE XFP or SFP+ Transceiver Installing a 10 GE XFP or SFP+ Transceiver Removing a 10 GE XFP or SFP+ Transceiver To remove a 10 GE XFP or SFP+ transceiver, complete the following procedure: 1. Installing a 10 GE XFP or SFP+ Transceiver To install a 10 GE XFP or SFP+ transceiver, complete the following procedure: 1. Carefully, remove the 10 GE XFP or SFP+ transceiver from its box. Important: Do not look directly into fiber optic transceivers or cables. These emit laser beams that can damage your eyes. 2. Align the 10 GE XFP or SFP+ transceiver to the front of the 10 GE XFP or SFP+ transceiver port available on the front panel of the appliance. Note: Do not install transceivers with cables attached. This can damage the cable, connector, or optical interface of the transceiver. 3. Hold the 10 GE XFP or SFP+ transceiver between your thumb and index finger and insert it in the 1 GE SFP transceiver port, pressing it in until you hear the transceiver snap into place. 4. Move the locking hinge to the down position, as shown in the following image: Page 9

10 5. Installing 10 GE XFP or SFP+ transceivers requires that you restart the NetScaler appliance. This enables the interface to recognize the newly inserted transceiver. 6. Following reboot, verify that the LED is green and blinks twice, which indicates that the transceiver is functioning as expected. 7. Run the following command to verify that the appliance has identified the transceiver. Ensure that you remove the dust caps attached to the transceiver and the cable only when you are ready to insert the cable. Additional Resources NetScaler 10G SFP+ transceivers now support Cisco DAC 10G transceiver/copper cables- that is TwinAx 10G SFP+ transceivers attached at each end with copper cables. This is applicable to: MPX21550, MPX20550, MPX19550, MPX17550, MPX16500, MPX14500, MPX13500, MPX11500, MPX8200, MPX8400, and MPX8600.
