Contact our admissions office at [email protected] for details. 3-Year HEI Pre-Master s Program for Students with 3-Year Undergraduate Qualifications (3-Year HEI PMP) The 3-Year HEI Pre-Master s Program is especially designed for students who aspire to pursue a Master s degree but have only three years of higher education qualifications, including Chinese Dazhuan students, Indian Section II university/ ordinary 3-year bachelor degree holders, and 3-year associate degree holders from reputable higher education institutions in other countries. This unique Pre-Master s Program allows students to take Widener undergraduate courses so that when they complete the program, they will be fully prepared to enter a Master s program in business, engineering, or hospitality at Widener. What is an ISC Pathway Program? Do I study academic courses? Yes. You will take specialized academic courses that fully prepare you to enter your degree program. There are academic credit courses for both IY1 and PMP students. Do I get academic credits for my degree? It depends. Both IY1 students and regular PMP students take credit-bearing courses in their chosen field and gain undergraduate credits (IY1) or 6 graduate credits (PMP) toward their degree. HEI PMP students whose previous higher education include three years of study will spend their PMP semesters to take undergraduate courses, which will prepare them for graduate studies but do not offer graduate degree credits. Am I taught by university faculty? Yes. The ISC offers a blended model with classes taught by both ISC staff and university faculty. 12
15 Do I take courses with American students? It depends. In most cases, IY1, regular PMP, and 3-Year HEI PMP students will be taking cohort classes with other international students to receive close attention and academic support while enrolled at the ISC. However, depending on the student s major and English level, there is a chance that he/she will take a Widener class with American students while enrolled at the ISC. Students will take Widener courses with American students for years 2-4 of their undergraduate degree or for their Master s degree. Do I get extra academic support and learn study skills? Yes. The ISC provides additional support to help you succeed academically. Do I get extra personal help to adjust to living in America? Yes. The ISC welcomes you from the day you arrive on campus and supports you to help you adapt to being an active member of the student community and to living in America. For undergraduate studies after the ISC, do I continue into the second year of my degree program? Upon completion of the ISC, you will move into the second year of your degree program (1-semester IY1 students will enter their second semester of a degree program). As an undergraduate student, will I graduate in 4 years? Depending on your program type, you will spend 4-16 months at the ISC and then the remaining three years (3.5 years for 1-semester students) of your 4-year degree program completely integrated into your degree program. Most undergraduate students spend eight months at the ISC. DAR YA KORNIYENKO (DASHA), Ukraine I learned a lot by writing and revising assignments. For example, I learned how to write an essay, how to structure it, how to order the elements to make my point stronger. My (writing) professor supported me all the time. 30 College of Arts and Sciences THE FOUNDATION OF WIDENER UNIVERSITY Home to the Humanities, Social Science, and Science divisions, the College of Arts and Sciences provides general education for all students plus major courses of study for those interested in the liberal arts, ultimately aiming to strengthen students competency in writing, mathematics, critical thinking, and computer skills. Students studying at the International Study Center can choose from nine undergraduate degree programs in Science and Social Science. Sciences Biology (BA track) Biology is the comprehensive study of life on earth, incorporating disciplines as varied as botany and zoology to microbiology and epigenetics. The Bachelor of Arts in Biology degree program allows students to combine their biology training with study in another field, providing excellent preparation for admission to physical therapy school or a career in scientific writing, law, or genetic counseling. Chemistry Chemistry is fundamental to many scientific disciplines, and it s what helps us understand other physical and life sciences like earth science and biology. Students who major in chemistry can choose to pursue careers within a wide range of sectors, from government and education to business and engineering. Computer Information Systems Design, build, and maintain computer information systems in this practical course that takes elements from both the Computer Science programs and the Management Information Systems program in the School of Business Administration. Environmental Science Students studying Environmental Science receive broad training in the traditional sciences biology, chemistry, geology, mathematics, and physics. In a practical, hands-on learning environment, students will develop their skills by traveling to carry out research projects in locations in Central and South America, including the El Bosque Nuevo butterfly farm in Costa Rica. Mathematics Mathematics is central to understanding natural sciences and engineering and it provides structure for computer programming, economic analysis, and physics. Students are trained in abstract thinking and logical argument, with an emphasis on analysis and problem solving. 28
31 Physics Develop an understanding of the subdisciplines and concepts of physics and astronomy, as well as methods of measurement, data analysis, and mathematical and computational analysis. Widener University Observatory is home to a 16-inch Meade Cassegrain reflecting telescope, allowing students to study state-of-the-art observational data on objects in the Solar System and the Milky Way Galaxy. Social Sciences Anthropology Anthropologists seek to understand why human beings are the way they are. Widener s undergraduate program in anthropology emphasizes the study and interrelation of four fields: Ethnography (contemporaneous cultures) International Relations The study of International Relations is closely linked to political science courses, as well as certain courses in anthropology, economics, modern languages, history, and psychology. Working with their academic advisor, students can choose to focus on areas such as: diplomacy, international business, national security studies, and the history and culture of a geographic region. Political Science Widener University s Political Science major provides an ideal platform for students who are interested in a career in government, business, or non-profit organizations, or those aiming for graduate study in fields such as political science, law, international affairs, public administration, city planning, community affairs, and policy analysis. Archaeology (cultural evolution) Linguistics (language and culture) Biological anthropology (biological origins and the relation of biological factors and cultural behavior) 29
