4 4 PA SCHOOL TAUGHT ME THE VOCABULARY The Norwalk/Yale PA Surgical Residency is an intensive 12-month program conducted jointly by the Departments of Surgery at Norwalk Hospital and Yale University School of Medicine. Through the combined effort of both institutions, the curriculum offered to the graduate PA is a dynamic educational experience. During the residency, you will divide your year into three segments: Norwalk Hospital for the initial months, Yale University School of Medicine and your elective rotations, and your return to Norwalk Hospital where, during the final months of your residency, you will assume greater responsibilities. Norwalk Hospital, founded in 1892, is a non-profit community teaching hospital and acute care facility serving a diverse population of nearly 250,000 residents in thirteen communities. Long recognized as a center for advanced medicine, Norwalk Hospital continues to keep pace with the ever expanding technology of health care. Laparoscopic surgical suites, minimally invasive surgery, the use of varied regional anesthesia techniques, and computerized physician order entry are just a few examples of the hospital s progressive approach to patient care. The comprehensive curriculum at Norwalk Hospital includes a structured series of daily lectures reinforced by the practical realities of ongoing clinical responsibilities and challenges. 5 5 OF MEDICINE; THE RESIDENCY PROGRAM TAUG aspects of surgical care. You will study and participate in the management of surgical emergencies, trauma, and every aspect of post-operative care and complications. Practice labs for laparoscopic techniques and suturing workshops are organized into the Norwalk curriculum as well. Other didactic elements include medical ethics forums and a medical writing course; Grand Rounds; Morbidity and Mortality Conferences; Trauma Rounds; and a Journal Club. Our carefully designed patient management conferences and multidisciplinary rounds encourage problem solving. Your eight months of clinical experience at Norwalk Hospital are divided equally into general surgery, orthopedics, urology, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, ENT, thoracic and vascular surgeries and surgical intensive care. Additionally, you will complete a one-month trauma rotation at a major trauma center. Residents also participate in the Norwalk Hospital s weekly Surgical Clinic offering them an opportunity to be involved in both pre- and post-operative assessment of patients in an outpatient setting. The renowned Yale University School of Medicine has been a continuing resource of teaching excellence throughout the history of medicine in America. Located in New Haven, CT adjacent to the Yale University campus, the facilities at the hospital and School of Medicine are available to you throughout your residency year. Your academics at Yale, besides lectures in physiology, molecular biology, and The basic purpose of the Yale experience is to expose the PA residents to those specialty rotations available in few other places. It is exciting to meet with the residents to discuss the rotation options and see their reactions when they realize all that is available to them. Yale and its affiliated hospitals offer essentially any kind of practice environment the residents might be interested in doing. The opportunity to work, in many cases with world renown experts, and see state of the art and even ground breaking treatment modalities, is a key component of the overall educational experience. Surgical expertise will be gained through the operating experience in the animal surgery lab, performing procedures with instructors from the Yale University School of Medicine. During your three clinical months at Yale, you will complete rotations in Anesthesiology and two elective choices. The flexibility in tailoring the program to meet the specific interests of each resident is one of the strengths of the Yale experience. As you progress through the year, your responsibilities as a Surgical PA Resident will increase. As part of a team you will care for a number of patients daily. You will conduct physical examinations and admission histories and learn to evaluate laboratory data and radiological tests. You will assist in emergency and ICU care of the surgical patient and be an active member of the trauma team at Norwalk Hospital. Collaborating with surgeons and other MDs on specific issues and orders, you will be expected to participate in the decision making processes. Night and weekend call, taken on a rotating basis, will help to strengthen your confidence and skills. In the operating room, you will develop the surgical expertise you need as you perform the duties of first or second assistant. The total care of surgical patients from admission to discharge will be your daily routine. My long affiliation with both the Norwalk Hospital and the Yale University School of Medicine enabled me to continue to learn, to teach, and to help modernize medical delivery systems for those requiring surgical care. I was an active participant in the development of the PA Surgical Residency Program at Norwalk/Yale nearly thirty years ago. The importance accorded to the PA role is built into the Department of Surgery s very structure and is recognized throughout the institution. During the residency year, a competitive stipend, hospital-paid medical, dental, and life insurance, paid holidays and vacation are provided. Subsidized housing is provided in an apartment complex adjacent to the hospital grounds. Upon completion of the residency, in addition to the advanced training and clinical experience gained from this nationally recognized postgraduate program, you will be awarded a certificate issued by Norwalk Hospital and the Yale University School of Medicine. The program is approved by the NCCPA for Category I and II CME credits. It is an active founding member of the Association of Postgraduate PA Programs. Alumni job placement assistance is available to all graduates. Employment networking is strong, effective and ongoing. Applicants must be graduates of an ARC-PA approved PA program and hold a Bachelor s Degree. They must also have passed or be eligible for the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) Examination.
