1 Hudson Valley Community College 80 Vandenburgh Avenue, Troy, New York AGENDA For the regular meeting of the Board of Trustees of Hudson Valley Community College to be held on Tuesday, November 25, 2014, at 5:00 p.m. or thereafter on the college campus, 80 Vandenburgh Avenue, Troy, New York, the following matters are submitted for consideration and action. 1. MINUTES Request is made for approval of the minutes of the regular meeting of the Board of Trustees held on October 28, ACADEMIC SENATE RECOMMENDATIONS CURRICULUM Request is made for approval of the following curriculum changes, as recommended by the Academic Senate and the President: 1. New Programs: A. Clean Energy Management A.A.S. Degree This new degree program will serve a need in the industry as well as providing a new relevant degree for a broad range of prospective students. The current program is used to train installers. The program is evolving and career field is looking for someone who can sell, install and put together a financial package for customers. This degree will aid students in obtaining jobs with the business aspect in addition to the technical skills. B. Surgical Technology Certificate In 2015 employers will be required to hire certified surgical technologists from an accredited program. While a "grandfather" exception will be granted for those surgical techs currently employed, hospitals will not be able to hire any new or additional techs who are not certified, and the grandfathered techs will not be able to leave their current position for another similar position without becoming certified as a surgical technician. This certificate program will meet the upcoming needs of all area hospitals/facilities that have a need for surgical technologists. This program will offer students the knowledge necessary for employment as a surgical technologist as well as the knowledge and ability to sit for the national certification exam. C. Surgical Technology A.A.S. Degree A two-year degree is not immediately required, but it is fully expected that a two-year degree will be a minimum requirement for accreditation and certification in the near future.

2 New courses: 1). SURG 101, Surgical Technology 1 Fundamentals for Surgical Technology; 8 credit hours; Fall 2015 This course is a comprehensive study of the operative environment, as well as the professional roles, communication techniques and ethical responsibilities of a surgical technologist. Lecture topics will include historical perspectives of perioperative services and medical terminology. The course also will provide theoretical knowledge for the application of essential operative skills during the perioperative phase. It will introduce the student to the practice of surgical technology with a focus on those skills necessary to function in the role of first scrub. The course will have a lecture and campus lab component. Open only to matriculated Surgical Technology students. 2). SURG 102- Surgical Technology II Principles of Surgical Technology; 10 credit hours; Spring 2016 This course provides an introduction to surgical pharmacology, anesthesia and wound healing physiology. It also discussed the medical legal aspects of perioperative practice in relation to patients' rights and surgical hazards. This course also will offer an introduction to surgical procedures. Open only to matriculated Surgical Technology students. 3). SURG 201, Surgical Technology III; 4 credit hours; Summer 2016 This course serves as an orientation to various other surgical specialties including: gynecology; urology; ear, nose and throat surgery; plastic and hand surgery; pediatric surgery; eye surgery; thoracic surgery; and vascular surgery. This course will introduce students to each anatomical system with a focused review of pathology specific to the procedures performed. The instrumentation specific to each specialty will be discussed, and the course will also include simulated surgical setups specific to each surgical specialty. Open only to matriculated Surgical Technology Students. 4). SURG 202, Surgical Technology IV; 12 credit hours; Fall 2016 This course serves as an orientation to various other surgical specialties including: neurosurgery, orthopedic, cardiac, trauma and emergency surgery. The course will introduce students to each anatomical system with a focused review of pathology specific to the procedures performed. The instrumentation specific to each specialty will be discussed. The course will include simulated surgical setups specific to each surgical specialty. The course will review content for the certification exam and offer students the tools needed to succeed to the workforce. Students also will be exposed to resume writing and interview techniques. Open only to matriculated Surgical Technology Students. 2. Changes in Degree Requirements A. Automotive Technical Services A.O.S. Degree Remove ENGL 101, English Composition I Remove AUTO 130, Automotive Specifications Increase AUTO 235, Automotive Electronics by one credit hour (4 to 5) Add AUBR 265, Basic Automotive Welding to the program as a required course AUTO 145, Passenger Car Chassis I will change in contact hours to accommodate a lab component (3-0-3 to 2-2-3); however, no credit change will occur. Overall credits are reduced by 1 (64 to 63) 2

AUTO 145, Passenger Car Chassis I, Spring 2016 Change in contact hours and catalog description: Current: 3 Lecture New: 2 Lecture, 2 Lab This course provides a comprehensive study of the chassis operation, repair and service procedures including front and rear suspension, steering systems and braking systems. Laboratory work will cover hands-on tasks related to classroom instruction. Focus will be placed on overhaul and adjustment procedures used in repairing chassis components. 3). AUBR 240, Automotive Refinishing I, Fall % change in course content, change in credit and contact hours and change in catalog description: Current: New: This course will cover aspects of automotive refinishing, including the use of spray painting equipment, air compressors, spray booths, respirators, refinishing materials, mixing and matching colors, masking, surface preparation and detailing on modern automobiles. Laboratory activities and assignments will provide an opportunity for hands-on application of course topics. The addition of the two (2) contact hours of lab time changes the course by 25% or more. 4). AUBR 265, Basic Automotive Welding; Spring 2016 Change in credit and contact hours and catalog description: Current: New: This course will provide students with basic welding skills needed for the automotive industry. The course will cover MIG, TIG, plasma and arc cutting methods. Welding materials will focus mainly on steel, with a small amount of pipe welding and aluminum. Lecture topics will cover welding safety, set-up prep and the operation of equipment and materials. 3
