2 ABOUT THE INSPECTION The purpose of this inspection is to assure government, parents and the public of the quality and standard of day care. When making judgements, inspectors have regard to how well the provider meets the National Standards for under Eights Day Care and Childminding. A list of these is attached. The report identifies strengths and areas for improvement. This inspection report must be made available to all parents. Information about the setting Roseacre Nursery originally opened in 1996 but was registered to the current committee in Within the provision is a before and after school club, a holiday club and a nursery. The provision operates from 2 mains rooms of a self contained section of the school although there is also access to defined areas of the school building. A maximum of 32 children may attend the provision at any one time. The nursery is open each weekday from 09:00 to 11:30 and 13:00 to 15:30 with a lunch period in between. The breakfast club opens from 07:30 to 08:50 and the after school club opens from 15:10 to18:00. These provisions operate term time only. A holiday club operates during all school holidays except for bank holidays and Christmas. Children have access to a secure enclosed outdoor play area and a section of the school playground. There are currently 50 children from 3 to under 5 years on roll in the nursery. Of these 49 children receive funding for nursery education. The nursery currently supports one child with special educational needs and at present there are no children being supported who speak English as an additional language. The nursery employs 4 part and full time staff. All the staff, including the manager hold appropriate early years qualifications. The nursery follows the Highscope philosophy and has recently gained the National Day Nursery quality assurance award. How good is the Day Care? Roseacre Nursery provides good quality care for children. The environment is warm, welcoming and visually stimulating to children. Staff work well as a team and good use is made of space and resources to meet children's needs. A range of resources are available to promote children's learning in all areas, these are arranged to make them accessible to children. Records are generally well organised with one area of weakness identified. Procedures are in place to review safety arrangements however, there is one area relating to safety, which has not yet been addressed. Good hygiene practices are promoted as part of the children's daily routine and staff ensure that children have access to regular drinks and a selection of healthy and nutritious snacks. Staff have a good awareness of child protection issues and the procedures to be followed, in
3 order to safeguard a child's welfare. Staff relate well to the children and good planning ensures that the children are involved in a broad range of activities to support their learning. Children are interested and occupied as they choose from the activities on offer. Children learn about equal opportunities through the resources and activities available to them. Staff work with parents to ensure any special needs are met. Children are encouraged to behave well as strategies for dealing with behaviour are appropriate and consistently applied. Parents are kept well informed and there is a good exchange of information to ensure continuity of care between the nursery and the home setting. What has improved since the last inspection? Not applicable. What is being done well? There is a wide range of resources, which are arranged in the rooms on low level shelves and units making them accessible to the children, which allows them to make their own choices. Good planning and the structure of the day ensures that children are involved in a broad range of activities. For example, the day includes planning time for the children [in line with the Highscope philosophy], continuous provision, teacher directed activities, circle [review time] and physical play. Staff promote good hygiene practices, which reduces the risk of infection. For example, children wash their hands at appropriate times, staff wear disposable gloves and aprons and cleaning schedules are in place for staff members. In addition, staff act in children's best interests when they are ill Children are made aware of equal opportunity issues through relevant activities such as food tasting and the celebration of different festivals. They are encouraged to express their feelings and develop their speech with the aid of dolls and a `ginger bear'. They also have access to a selection of resources, which reflect positive images of diversity. Children are made aware of their boundaries and encouraged to behave well through the use of age appropriate strategies. These include asking the child to apologise and removal from the situation, with an explanation from staff about the consequences of their behaviour. Children are constantly praised by staff for positive behaviour. Appropriate strategies are used to encourage children to tidy up and to settle down for circle time. Procedures keep parents informed about their children, which ensures there is continuity of care between the nursery and the home setting. Each child has an individual folder and a communication booklet, which is sent home every night. Parents also have access to information displayed on the notice board, regular newsletters and parent s evenings.
