Pile Driving Safety

Site Setup Ensure surveyors have laid out and marked the work area. Level the ground for proper crane set up. Establish the best routes for delivery and staging of pile and equipment. This could include a review of the MOT plans for proper lane closures. Communicate with trucking company about staging and timing of delivery. Be aware of overhead obstructions including powerlines.

Site Setup

Off Loading Pile Establish an efficient and logical route for the piles to be delivered to site. Stage the trucks, to minimize distraction in the work zone and to allow for greater visibility. Ensure crew members are communicating when unchaining pile. Avoid pinch points and use good fitting work gloves. Inspect rigging and ensure proper capacity for anticipated load. Secure tag line.

Off Loading Pile

Template Erection Typically we use a two- stage template. Ensure crew members are properly trained in fall protection and are qualified to operate an aerial lift. Set up fall protection system on ground. A variety of exposures are encountered when constructing the template. Cutting and welding Fall protection Suspended loads Vibratory power packs Proper rigging techniques

Template Erection

Template Erection

Predrilling Critical to establish utility locates and/or soil boring results to determine area to be drilled. Typically an auger drill encased in leads is used. Jetting could be an alternative Inspect auger for signs of cracking and or loose members. Be prepared to remove spoils and instruct crew members to use caution near the opened holes.

Predrilling

Standing the Pile Establish and review hand signals prior to start. Your pile should be set up on adequate dunnage. Inspect all rigging to be used from attachment point to load. Eliminate slack in rigging and use smooth and steady movements. Confirm a tag line is in place.

Standing the Pile

Pile Hammer Selection Diesel Hammer invented by Nazis in Germany. Important for the Contractor & Engineer to establish optimum hammer size for a job. Too small a hammer may not be able to drive the pile to the required capacity. Too large a hammer may damage the pile. Critical to inspect the hammer and ensure there are no structural defects. Tighten all bolts and connectors firmly. Check the rungs on the lead ladder to confirm they are not bent or cracked.

Pile Hammer Selection

Driving Opertaions Ensure there is a rope and rope grab on hammer leads. Provide proper PPE including ear protection. Maximize use of aerial lift to fuel hammer and swap out pile cushions. Monitor the hammer as it drives, be alert and look for falling particles. Operator and crew must effectively communicate.

Driving Operations

Driving Operations

Pile Cushions Concrete piles require a pile cushion between the helmet and the pile lead Typically made of plywood, hardwood, plywood & hardwood composites, or other man-made materials Typical thickness 4 inches (min) to 12 inches or more

Pile Cushions Pile cushion deteriorating after 2,000 blows. New cushion is typically 8 inches, after 1400 blows it s down to 5.5 inches. Use caution when replacing cushions.

Pile Cushions

Employee Responsibility Some experts have suggested that nearly 85% of industrial accidents are behavior based. Engaging your employees is the best thing you can do for your safety program. Give them the knowledge and the equipment to keep them safe. A reduction in accidents can not only save money, but also gives your company a competitive advantage in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
