2 ArcGIS is a platform that allows you to author your maps, share them, and collaborate with your organization. One way in which you can collaborate with your organization is by building web applications for interacting with your maps. For me, as a GIS Professional, I have decided that although playing with web development was a lot of fun, it taught me that I am not a web developer. If I want to serve up web mapping applications, I want to use a WYSIWYG application builder to quickly get my maps out to the rest of the organization, regardless on if they want to view it at their office desktop machine or from there smartphone. 2

3 The Silverlight and Flex Application builders were very popular, but they targeted desktop browsers. For last couple of years, everyone has been wanting a Javascript Application builder so they could target mobile audiences. The WebApp Builder is the answer to those wanting a configurable web application builder that did not rely on having to dive into any code to setup. 3

4 Web technologies are evolving rapidly. The WebApp builder is a pure HTML Javascript solution with no third party plugins or frameworks other than Dojo for the Esri map components. Has a responsive user interface, meaning the one app will readjust itself depending on the size and orientation of the display that s viewing it. When 10.3 comes along with its fancy streaming 3D services, these will be able to be loaded straight into Web App builder to allow users to view and interact with your 3D content without any plugins. 4

5 Why build from the ground up, when you can build within the Web AppBuilder supported environment, which has already taken care of the responsive design and provides the building blocks for a good majority of most projects needs. No need to re invent the wheel most of the existing widgets will take care of the majority of most application requirements. Focus your developer efforts on building custom widgets for additional functionality that is specific to your business. Design your own themes that adhere to your company style guidelines. 5

6 The Web AppBuilder is not an isolated piece of work. It will actually be integrated into both ArcGIS Online and Portal. What this means when your done creating your web map in ArcGIS Online or Portal, right now you can click share and share it to some of the focused application templates that you saw in the plenary. But you will also be able to initiate app builder to build a more configurable and powerful application, specific to your needs. Fully Supported is definitely something worth emphasising. If your having issues you can raise this with support. This is something that you cannot do if you build an application from scratch using the APIs 6

7 Does use some HTML5 functionality = therefore need to be on modern browsers. Looking at the stats, most Internet Explorer users are now on versions 8 or above. Supported: Again, if you build an app from the ground up = our support might help with any issues specific to the APIs, but they are not going to step through and debug your code. The AppBuilder is a supported product and you can rely on support to help you out. It will not only be embedded into ArcGIS Online, but it will also be embedded in Portal 10.3 Todd will later talk about the Developer Edition of Web AppBuilder which allows you to host Web AppBuilder locally. 7

10 SIMON: So your ArcGIS Online users now have the choice of sharing there web maps to either one of the many Esri application templates, or they can choose to launch the Web AppBuilder to build an application with a lot more options on configuration. But theres also a middle ground here. * (this means click mouse for animation) Perhaps you don t want your users from having to build an application from scratch everytime in Web AppBuilder. You can build an application and then export it as a template, so that others can choose it, just like they choose from the Esri template apps. Choose which parts of the app will be configurable, logo, title, allow them to turn widgets on or off, whatever you want them to configure. Hardcode what they shouldn t be configuring company logo, the style of the app, the print service URL, mandate that every map has a scalebar and overview map. 10

23 Geoprocessing Services are a very powerful capability of ArcGIS for Server, and can provide very powerful capabilities to your web mapping applications. This service allows the user to click on the map and it will calculate the upstream watershed from that point. 22

28 TODD Final version of Web App Builder will support 3D environments again without any plugins Widgets will work within 3D and navigation will be intuitive from using a mouse to using touch gestures. This will support both the new 3D scene service that ArcGIS Server 10.3 will expose, along with Web Scenes you can export from Desktop, CityEngine and ArcGIS Pro. Will also be able to develop custom widgets that work with 3D content. 27

29 TODD: Beta 3 is currently available for download. That link there will take you to the Beta Community where you can sign up and get access. AWAB beta was introduced into AGOL on the 23 rd September, so you can start playing with that now within your Developer or Organisation account. The final releases of Developer Edition and AGOL AWAB will coincide with the 10.3 release (Whens this?) 28

30 SIMON: Quick sneak peek into some of the new things we expect to see in Web AppBuilder once it does go final 29

31 SIMON: At the moment, themes need to be developed by developers. There will be a theme builder that will allow you to build themes within AWAB in a WYSISYG interface. Betas are all about listening to feedback so the final releases will change to enhance the user experience of the interfaces. And there will be additional OOTB widgets and Themes for you to choose from. I believe that Imagery custom widget we showed, might be one of them. 30
