1 renew A newsletter from UnitedHealthcare get relief from seasonal allergies With the arrival of spring comes green grass, blooming flowers and, for many, allergies. In the spring, there are more pollens in the air from trees and grasses. These pollens can cause allergy symptoms. You might sneeze, or have a stuffy and runny nose, sore throat, and itchy eyes, mouth and nose. You may also cough and have watery eyes or headaches. The good news is, you can help reduce your symptoms. Staying indoors, closing windows and using air conditioning can help. So can avoiding yard work. Also, don t hang laundry outside. Over-the-counter nasal sprays and antihistamines can also help ease allergy symptoms. If your allergies are severe, talk with your doctor about other treatment options. Medicare Part D covers many low-cost medications to treat allergy symptoms. Women: Take heart of your heart health. See Page 6. Spring 2012

2 a message from UnitedHealthcare CEO Tom Paul On behalf of all of us at UnitedHealthcare, thank you for being a member this year. We know you have many choices, and we re grateful that you ve chosen a plan from UnitedHealthcare. Today and in the future, UnitedHealthcare is committed to providing you with affordable, quality health care coverage. Thousands of our employees work every day to find ways to serve you better. As the cost of health care grows, you can help keep your costs low and yourself healthy. Be sure to get your annual physical and regular preventive screenings. Early detection and prevention are two of the best ways to help avoid future health care expenses. Together, we can make your health care dollars go further. Thank you, Thomas S. Paul Chief Executive Officer, UnitedHealthcare Medicare Solutions three ways to prevent Medicare fraud and abuse You might think fraud is something that only happens at big banks. But sometimes, people try to get more money from Medicare through fraud and abuse. For example, health care providers might send you a bill for care you never received or run extra tests you don t need. Or, someone might use another person s Medicare card to get medical care, prescriptions, supplies or equipment. When this happens, everyone loses. Medicare and taxpayers lose money. You end up paying more for your health care. But there are simple things you can do to help prevent fraud and abuse: 1. Protect your personal information. This includes your Social Security number, Medicare ID and credit card numbers. Don t give them out over the phone or to people you don t know. Don t believe people who say they ll give you something free in return. 2. Check your claims. Make sure your bills match up with the services and equipment you received. 3. Be suspicious. Don t trust people who threaten or scare you. Ask questions if something doesn t make sense. For more information about Medicare fraud, visit To report fraud, call MEDICARE, TTY , 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, or the number on the back of your member ID card. 2 Renew Spring 2012

3 new generic drugs help you save Are you taking medication to treat high cholesterol, allergies or mental illness? If so, there is good news that could soon save you money. Some common brand name drugs that treat these and other conditions are going generic. Generics, Defined When a new drug hits the market, it s under patent. That means only the company that develops it can sell it. But after about 20 years, the patent expires. Other companies are then allowed to make the drug, too. Their versions are called generic drugs. These generic drugs have the same active ingredients as brand name drugs. The government requires that they re just as safe, strong and pure and they usually cost a lot less. The New Class Brand name drugs that are scheduled to be available as generics in 2012 include: Lipitor Do you take one of these drugs? Talk with your doctor or pharmacist. He or she can tell you when the generic is available and if it is right for you. Not all new generic drugs are low cost. Some generics may initially be available from only one company. This means supplies may be limited and prices remain high. As a result, the generic may have a higher copay. Usually after about six months, more companies begin making the generic drug and prices begin to drop. New generics are normally added to your Part D drug list as soon as they come out. However, the copay may be higher until the price for the generic comes down. is there a generic for you? 6 ask Dr. Reed Reed V. Tuckson, M.D. Executive Vice President and Chief of Medical Affairs, UnitedHealth Group I know heart disease affects men, but does it also affect women like me? Are there differences in how it affects men versus women? Dear Dorothy, I am so glad you asked this question. While many people think of heart disease as a man s disease, it is the number one cause of death for women as well. 1 According to the American Heart Association (AHA), heart disease kills more women than the next five causes of death put together. Dorothy in North Dakota Just as with men, women can experience crushing chest pain or severe shortness of breath when a heart attack occurs. However, according to the AHA, common symptoms for women also include: Sudden tiredness or lack of energy (this is the most common symptom and it s easy to ignore) Difficulty in breathing (this may be your only symptom) Nausea, vomiting or indigestion, especially in combination with other symptoms Pressure and squeezing sensations in the chest, and heartburn-like feelings Pain in the back, neck or jaw Unexplained or excessive sweating Dizziness or lightheadedness If you experience these symptoms, and they last for more than five minutes, you may be having a heart attack. Call 911. In the meantime, here are some things you can do to help protect your heart and prevent heart disease: See your doctor regularly for heart checkups Eat a healthy diet Don t smoke Get active Control stress 1 National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, January Renew Spring 2012

7 ask your pharmacist about a shingles vaccine Shingles is a painful rash caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. A vaccine can prevent it or reduce its effects. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the shot for all adults ages 60 and older. 1 The shingles vaccine is covered under Part D. In most states, pharmacists can give the shingles vaccine. Your plan recommends getting your shingles vaccine from a network pharmacy, if allowed by your state. At the time of your visit, you will have to pay your plan copay or coinsurance. The pharmacy will do the rest. Getting the shot at your doctor s office might require more work and could cost you more. Ask your doctor to bill your Part D plan, if they can. Otherwise your doctor might bill you for the cost of the vaccine, plus the administration fee, which may be more than the plan covers. You will have to pay this and fill out paperwork to send to the plan to get paid back. call before you go. Check your benefits before you go to get your shingles vaccine. If you have questions or aren t sure how to get the shingles vaccine, call the number on the back of your member ID card. 1 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, September give back, get healthy Maybe you fed a meal to the hungry or helped tutor children.
