California State University Early Assessment Program (EAP) Claudia Quezada, EAP Director California State University, East Bay

High School students can take steps NOW to ensure they are ready for college level studies. The Early Assessment Program (EAP) helps determine if high school students English & math skills are on target to help them succeed in college.

BENEFITS of the Early Assessment Program (EAP) Avoid spending time and money in college remediation courses that do not count towards a bachelor s degree EAP Results are accepted at ALL 23 CSUs and close to 90 participating CA Community Colleges = Skip the required math and English placement test 113 schools. Allows for the opportunity to use Senior year to improve English and math skills

BENEFITS of the EAP (continued) Earns students an exemption from participating in the CSU s Early Start Program (summer school) Earns an exemption from the CBEST; an exam required to take if your goal is to become a teacher

California Community Colleges have been accepting the EAP since AcceptingEAP.aspx 90+ CCCs accept the EAP. Local colleges accepting the EAP include: Las Positas, Chabot, Ohlone, San Mateo, College of Marin, City College of San Francisco How UC-Bound Students BENEFIT from the EAP: EXAMPLE: a student plans to attend a UC by transferring from a participating Community College. That student can use their EAP scores as placement at that community college prior to transferring to a UC.

EAP has been assessing California 11 th graders since Approximately 5 million 11 th graders in California will be assessed from yrs ; That s 5 million California students that have received a free early warning of their need for additional college preparation in their senior year of high school; The EAP program provides this at no cost to schools and families; The combined fee for the CSU s English and Math placement tests is $36.

EAP scores Do Not appear on students transcripts The EAP Does Not impact admissions. The EAP scores are only viewed by colleges for Placement Purposes, not admissions. A college may view EAP results, only if a student applies to that school, and only until after that student has been accepted by the school wishing to view results.

EAP Results EAP / CAASP results will indicate whether a student is: Ready for college in English / math Conditionally ready for college English / math Not ready for college in English / math

Approved Courses CSU will continue to use approved English and math courses to meet the EAP conditional status (students can MOVE UP to Ready by successfully completing one of these in Senior Year) English: ERWC, AP, Honors, IB Math: courses with Alg. II as a pre-requisite, E-Learning Self-paced math Common Core Math CSU will use adopted common core math sequences Courses above the Math III will qualify Courses must have been adopted through the UC Doorways process - (Course Management Portal)

Students that are Conditionally ready-standard met on the CAASPP-EAP for math can take an Online, self-paced, math course that is Free of charge with Fee Waiver. * Students must Enroll for Online math course by mid-january of their Senior Year ALSO, students that scored in these ranges, can enroll in the Online Math course: OR scored on SAT math; OR scored on ACT math.

EAP Transition EAP was part of the CSTs for 9 years; EAP was the model used nationally for the NEW assessment; EAP will continue to exist under the new CAASPP system; Spring 2016 is the 2 nd year EAP is incorporated into the new CAASPP Smarter Balanced test.

Additional Pathway CSU anticipates fewer students demonstrating readiness due to the change in the structure of the assessment. This may increase the number of students needing remediation and to take placement tests. CSU wants to ensure all students receive a fair assessment of their college readiness status.

Additional Pathway CSU currently has a Determination of Competence in English and Mathematics policy that uses SAT/ACT scores. CSU will use SAT/ACT results to indicate a conditional college-ready status in English and mathematics. Encourage students to take SAT/ACT in the junior year This allows for students to be placed in appropriate senior year English and/or mathematics courses.

Additional Pathway Using SAT/ACT Sub- Scores for EAP Conditional Status Test Existing CSU Readiness Cut Score (Exempt from ELM/EPT) New CSU Conditionally Ready Cut Score (Conditionally Exempt from ELM/EPT) SAT Math SAT Reading ACT Math ACT English CSU recommends students take ACT/SAT tests by the end of the junior year.

The SBAC-CAASPP-EAP test has SETTINGS & PREFERENCES you can adjust so that the test can be easier for you to view and/or hear questions.

The test is offered in Math and English in 2-parts: (Computer Adaptive Part and Performance Section Part). Please complete BOTH subjects and BOTH Parts completely to get a full score on the actual test given at your high school.

It can take care of your Placement requirement if you do well on the Test. Good LUCK! ON the day of the test at your High School, be sure to RELEASE your TEST scores for both MATH & ENGLISH. ** This will help you be able to access YOUR OWN Scores Online ** Also, schools will receive your score. Only schools WHERE YOU applied, and after you are accepted. This does not impact admissions.

Thank you!
