1 Spring and Easter Teacher s Notes Start-of-day Assembly Resources CD: Template for 100 square grid Transcript and translation of songs Coloured images of eggs for the song Image of an egg, a flower, a moss covered stone and a butterfly Template with images of the egg Words for the 4 eggs activity Songs/Sound CD: Spanish song Huevos de Pascua, track 1 Correct pronunciation for the 4 eggs activity, track 3. Other: Bunch of spring flowers, an egg. Ideas and suggestions: Welcome everyone in to the hall with the song Easter Eggs playing on CD. Do the children recognise the tune? Ask the children to listen to the song and show the lyrics on whiteboard. The song introduces simple vocabulary including colours. Use the coloured images of eggs available on the Resources CD and then ask them to sing along. Allow them to continue on their own with the instrumental version at the end. Tell the children they will sing it again at the end of the day. See page 2 for transcripts. Bring the children s attention to the spring flowers you have brought to the assembly. What do they remind us off and what is this time of year special for? Tell the children that throughout the day they will be doing activities related to Spring and the festival of Easter that always falls within Spring. Four eggs activity: Show the children 4 eggs, plastic Kinder surprise eggs for example, or show the image of an egg on a whiteboard (see image provided with question mark on resource CD). Tell the children that inside each egg something is hiding. Could they guess what? Egg 1 A flower to show that new life is starting in Spring (use vocabulary for flower and what s inside the egg? ). If you haven t got a real flower, show the image of a flower provided. Egg 2 A moss-covered stone, to show that things can grow in difficult places (use vocabulary for stone and moss and what s inside the egg? ). If you haven t got a real stone and moss, show the coloured image provided on the resources CD. Egg 3 A butterfly to show that things change from one thing to another and that there is beauty everywhere (use vocabulary for butterfly and what s inside the egg? ). Show the coloured image of a butterfly provided on the resources CD. Egg 4 Nothing... inside the last egg is air and without air there is no new life. Just because we can t see something doesn t mean it s not important (use vocabulary for air nothing and what s inside the egg? ). Ask the children What would you put in your egg?. Perhaps the children could have a competition to put something in an egg and find out the Spanish word for it. The winner is picked out in a future assembly. Distribute the black and white image of an egg provided (see template with images of the egg). Show the children a picture of an egg and a 100 square grid. Say that by the end of the day they will be able to tell the rest of the school what they mean and why they are significant to today s theme. 3 4 Seasons game Here the children will learn the vocabulary associated with the seasons and months of the year. Resources CD: Images for the four seasons Images for the twelve months Template for months cards Template for seasons cards Words for months Words for seasons Song/Sounds CD: Correct pronunciation for the months, track 7 and seasons, track 8. This game can either be played with just images or just words. Download the images and words provided for the months and seasons. Back them with card and possibly laminate them to use them as flashcards or for display. Explain/remind the children that the year is split into four seasons and that there are months within each season. Explain what the seasons are called in Spanish and what the months are called in Spanish. Divide the children into groups and distribute four season images/cards and twelve months images/cards for each group. The four season images/cards are placed on the table, face up and the twelve month images/cards are placed face down. The children take turns to turn over the month images/cards and decide which season it belongs to. At the end of the game the children are told how many out of the twelve they have got correct. 5 Recall and sequence traditions around Spring and Easter in Spain Here the children will learn about another country s Spring and Easter traditions. Resources CD: Images of traditions with dates Information on Spring and Easter in Spain Images for Spring and Easter List of key vocabulary Set of black and white images. Song/Sounds CD: Correct pronunciation for key vocabulary, track 9. The teacher shares with the children what happens across Spain in the Spring and at Easter, using the images and video clip provided to illustrate the events. The children then have the opportunity to ask questions about what they ve heard and seen. They are then given, as a group or individually, a set of the black and white images and they have to sequence them correctly remembering what happens when. The children then share their sequenced pictures and images with a friend or another group, retelling the traditions around Spring time and Easter from another country. Resources CD: Coloured images and photos of all the animals/items mentioned in the song Transcript and translation of song. Song/Sound CD: Spanish song, track 4 Instrumental, track 5. Here the children will listen carefully to the song and practise singing it with expression and fun. The teacher could ask the children what happens in Spring and what they think about when you mention Spring. Can the children listen out for any of those things in the song? The children can practise throughout the day in order to perform to the school in the end-of-day Assembly. See page 13 for transcripts. 5 6 Play the rabbit game Here the children will develop their number vocabulary and words associated with parts of a rabbit. Resources CD: Template for rabbit parts Image of rabbit Words for numbers 1 to 6 Words for rabbit parts Sheet with details of corresponding rabbit parts and numbers. Song/Sounds CD: Correct pronunciation for numbers 1 to 6, track 15 and rabbit parts, track 14. Extras: Dice. The teacher uses the template provided for the rabbit parts. They will need to be cut out and possibly laminated. Practise numbers from 1 to 6 and the different rabbit parts. Use the images provided on the resources CD and play the sound CD to practise pronunciation. The children are put into evenly distributed groups (ideally 5 or 6). Give one die per table and a set of cut up rabbit parts, enough for every child to make a complete rabbit. Each child has to complete individual rabbits. Each rabbit part has a corresponding die number (1 = body, 2 = front leg, 3 = tail, 4 = ear, 5 = back leg, 6 = head). Display these details clearly on the classroom walls or on the whiteboard. Each child throws a die in turn and says the number in Spanish. Whatever they throw they can have the corresponding part of the rabbit. They will need to say the Spanish word for that part of the rabbit. If they throw a number and they already have that part of the rabbit, e.g. a head, or have enough of those parts e.g. 4 legs, they have to pass the die on without adding to their rabbit. The winning table is the one where all the players on the table have completed their rabbits. 7 Hidden eggs game Here the children will consolidate their letter and number vocabulary. Resources CD: Template for 100 square grid Words for numbers from 1 to 10 Letters A to J Template for 10 eggs. Song/Sounds CD: Correct pronunciation for numbers, track 16 and letters, track 17. Extras: Pencils. Practise letters A to J and numbers 1 to 10 in Spanish. Use the sound CD and the numbers and letters provided on the Resources CD which you can enlarge and laminate. Give the children a grid that has 100 squares on it. Use the template provided on the resources CD. The x axis is for letters (A J) and the y axis is for numbers (1-10). This game is played in pairs. Both players place 10 eggs on their grid without the other player seeing each egg must fit completely within one of the squares. Each player has a turn at guessing on which square their opponent has placed an egg by saying a letter and a number in Spanish. The game continues until one player has guessed all ten locations of the other player s eggs.
