In particular, those practitioners who would like to strengthen the scientific basis of their practice and existing knowhow and further their knowledge of evidence based practice and its application to physiotherapy. 4 What differs the Master from the Bachelor? While the undergraduate program is focused on training professionals as generalists in physiotherapy, the MMP strives to develop specialists in a particular field of physiotherapy who possess an in-depth knowledge of selected topics. New, more complex concepts will be learnt through critical analysis of the research evidence with a view to developing experts, who, though focused on their specific field of enquiry, will never lose sight of the practice of physiotherapy as a whole. Not only will the job prospects be promising after completion of the Master, but the potential financial benefits as well, owing to the enhanced knowledge and skills of the graduates. Ultimately, the Master degree can be a springboard to the start of an academic career. 5 during the last decades, physiotherapy has been under increasing pressure from society to provide good clinical outcomes and advanced expertise. The Master in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy program is oriented towards providing physiotherapists with advanced specialized training in sports physiotherapy and manual physiotherapy. In both specialties, the graduates will acquire a high level of clinical reasoning competence (examination and management) and a high level of technical skills for the assessment and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. Furthermore, as scholarly practitioners, they will be able to critically evaluate and contribute to current research and rigorously and independently apply the evidence relevant to complex musculoskeletal physiotherapy practice. The program provides practical and theoretical instruction under the supervision of an international team of dedicated academic and clinical specialists. The emphasis is on a paradigm shift from an experience and authority based model to an evidence based model. as such, the Master does not follow one particular concept. The students will attain the necessary expertise to analyze highly complex clinical problems, develop new concepts, work on clinically relevant research questions and make them applicable for the clinical practitioner. as such, they will play an important role in ensuring high quality musculoskeletal practice in the future. 6 about Thim van der Laan at the end of the 90s, Thim van der Laan started the dutch Bachelor program in Physiotherapy in the canton of graubunden in the eastern part of Switzerland. Quality of education, personal development and an individual and flexible treatment of students are key elements of the focus of this small, yet powerful, educational institution which concentrates solely on physiotherapy. Thim van der Laan supports the concept of a Master s degree in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy from the perspectives of quality, internationalization and evidenced based practice. 7 Master Program The Master program comprises 90 ECTS and is divided into five semesters; four with course blocks and one dedicated to the Master Thesis. 60 credits are earned in the main field of musculoskeletal physiotherapy, the generic component of the program. 30 credits are dedicated to the area of specialization; either sports physiotherapy or manual therapy. To attain the competences, the Master is comprised of two complementary learning lines: the clinical expert line which is integrated within the internship, and the scholarly practitioner line which culminates in the dissertation. The program encompasses generic fundamental courses for both the manual therapy and sports physiotherapy streams, and courses exclusively designed for the chosen area of speciality. 8 Sports Physiotherapy or Manual Therapy? as musculoskeletal therapists, both manual therapists and sport physiotherapists are scholarly practitioners engaged in high level evidence based clinical practice. This competency will be demonstrated by the musculoskeletal therapist in the dissertation. Manual therapists, as clinical experts, utilize skilled, hands-on specific techniques including manipulation/mobilization to assess and treat soft tissue and joint structures for the purpose of modulating pain; increasing range of motion (RoM); reducing or eliminating soft tissue inflammation; inducing relaxation; improving contractile and inert tissue repair, extensibility and/or stability; facilitating movement; and improving function. The specific courses in Manual Therapy (M1- M4) focus on clinical skills and clinical reasoning. Sports physiotherapists work on an expert level with athletes of all ages and abilities, with individuals and groups, to prevent injury, restore optimal function and contribute to the enhancement of sports performance using sports-specific knowledge, skills and approach to achieve the best clinical results. The specific courses in Sports Physiotherapy (S1 S5) focus on performance assessments and intervention strategies based on sound clinical reasoning. 8

9 Internship a substantial component of the program is the internship. Central to the internship is the student who continually strives to evaluate his/her strengths and weaknesses in relation to the competencies of the Master in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy program. Through self-evaluation, peer-evaluation and supervisor s evaluation, he/she will transfer personal experiences both at his/her own workplace and that of a registered musculoskeletal physiotherapist, into concrete goals and activities. The internship commences in the second semester of the Master program and continues through to program s conclusion at the end of the fourth semester. 10 dissertation and Research The final semester is principally concerned with the dissertation. The student is engaged in a research topic related to one of the lines of research of the Master program or a partnered college or university. The lines of research at the University College Physiotherapy Thim van der Laan include topics about performance related musculoskeletal complaints. High amplitude repetitive loading movements are being analyzed in the context of handball and volleyball players. In the field of low amplitude repetitive loading, one of the best known projects is MoReMU (Motor control and Repetetive strain injuries in Musicians). other areas of research include studies into cooling, recovery and healing, training of muscle mechanical power and emg processing using wavelets. 10

12 good to know entry Requirements To ensure small classes and to benefit fully from the international team of professors, the maximum number of participants for each course is limited to 30. In order to attend the program, the following prerequisites need to be fulfilled: Bachelor in Physiotherapy or equivalent Proficiency in understanding, reading and writing english enrollment Prospective students may enrol for the course by completing the application form which can be downloaded from the website. The application deadline for the new Master class which starts in autumn (around august/september), is at the end of May. The application form contains a list of documents to be submitted including a Curriculum Vitae (CV) and a motivation letter. Tuition Fees The tuition fees for the Master in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy are CHF per semester (status 2015). For alumni students, the tuition fees will be discounted by CHF per semester. The same discount will apply to those who pay the tuition fees in full prior to the start of the program. There are no additional application or administration fees. Board and lodging are not included in the tuition fees. Course Structure The program is delivered over five semesters. It is organized into modules with contact hours in blocks of four days (Thursday to Sunday). 13 Class Location/accommodation The majority of the course blocks will take place at the Swiss site of Thim van der Laan in Landquart. Landquart is located in the canton of graubunden, the gateway to the internationally renowned ski resorts of davos, St Moritz and Laax. It is only 60 minutes by car from Zurich and also has a direct train connection. during the 4-day blocks from Thursday to Sunday, there are a variety of accommodation options. Students looking for a place to stay overnight should contact our office for information about available accommodation locations in and around Landquart. In order to highlight the international character of the studies, to broaden the horizon of the students and to provide access to external know-how and infrastructure, some of the courses will be organized abroad. These many years of experience have led to a considerable knowledge of the health care system, which will be transferred over to the Master s program.
