October 31, 2014 ADVANCED MATERIALS AND TECHNOLOGY MANUAL General 1.1 Introduction This Manual is prepared to familiarize Engineering Personnel, Contractors and Consultants with the fundamentals, principals and better practices for use of advanced materials and technologies during construction. This Manual specifies specifics addressed to both the Contractor and Engineer, however, the Engineer and Inspector should never adjust or otherwise operate the Contractor s equipment. The Specifications and Plans will govern where the instructions in this manual differ from the Specifications and Plans for a project. 1.2 Overview of the Advanced Materials and Technology Unit The mission of the Advanced Materials and Technology (AMT) Unit is to support the Office of Materials and Road Research, MnDOT Districts, Engineering Services Division, other state agencies and Contractors by providing advanced materials and technology expertise. The AMT unit provides support for the development and implementation of new methods to evaluate paving and grading and base material properties prior to and during construction. This work includes developing an understanding of basic technologies such as those using global navigation satellite systems, thermal imaging, seismic measurements, laser based scanning and equipment control. Such technologies will be refined to achieve construction efficiencies and quality control / quality assurance applications. These applications will result in hardware, software and testing specifications to be implemented on State and Local construction projects. 2.0 Geo-Spatial Technologies 2.1 Definitions Cloud is a web-based user interface Cloud Computing is the use of computing resources (hardware and software) that are delivered as a service over a network to enable near, realtime visualization (maps) and manipulation of geo-spatial data Cloud Storage is network storage (typically the internet) where the geo-spatial data is stored in virtualized pools of storage Control Points (sometimes referred to as survey markers, monuments, hubs, control markers) are temporary or permanent objects placed to mark key survey points on the earth s surface. These markers are used to indicate elevation and/or horizontal position.

October 31, 2014 ADVANCED MATERIALS AND TECHNOLOGY MANUAL Coordinate System is a system that uses one or more numbers, or coordinates, to uniquely determine the position of a point or other geometric element on a manifold such as Euclidean space Data are measurements recorded by the Instrumented Roller, or information generated/processed from these measurements (e.g., GNSS coordinates, stiffness, temperature, pass count, speed, frequency, amplitude) Geo-Spatial Data is data collected by instrumentation that uses a Global Positioning System (GPS) and other sensors to measure in-situ conditions during construction efforts Site is the Project where the instrumented rollers are required Site Analysis is the process where the Contractor determines the number of GPS repeaters needed to cover the entire working length of the Project and to address Project staging of GPS repeaters and base station(s) when used. This process should be completed before or during Site Setup/Calibration Site Setup/Calibration is the process of setting up the local base station, repeaters, and GNSS receiver. It also includes determining the coordinate information of each survey marker and storing this information within the IC software Veda is a standardized intelligent construction data management (ICDM) software that stores, maps and analyzes IC and associated geospatial data (e.g., thermal profiler data, spot test data). This software can perform standardized data processing, analysis and reporting to provide Project summary results quickly in the field from various IC manufacturers. In particular, the software can provide statistics, histograms, correlations for the IC measurements (e.g., speed, temperature, pass count, ICMV), document coverage area and evaluate the uniformity of compaction as part of the Project quality control operations. 2.2 Acronyms and Abbreviations D dimensional DPC daily percent coverage GNSS global navigation satellite system GPS global positioning system ICDM intelligent construction data management Rover remotely operated video enhanced receiver RTK real time kinematic RTRN Real Time Reference Network

October 31, 2014 ADVANCED MATERIALS AND TECHNOLOGY MANUAL UTC Coordinated Universal Time UTM Universal Transverse Mercator Veda intelligent construction data management software 2.3 Project Selection Decision Tree Thermal Profiling and Intelligent Compaction Methods Thermal profiling and intelligent compaction are recommended for use when the following project/site conditions are met: The technology can be used with the following specifications: Technology Specification Intelligent Compaction (IC) SP 2016 Quality Management 2105, 2106, 2211, 2215, 2331, , 2360, 2365 Special 1 Thermal Profiling (TP) SP 2360, Quality Management 1 It is recommended that the top of each layer of 2105, 2106, 2211 and 2215 be Test 2 Rolled per 2111, regardless of whether IC is used. IC is recommended for use on 2353, only when used in conjunction with 2360 (i.e., when IC is already being used with 2360) Lane Miles are about 8 lane miles or more Cellular Coverage, to allow for automatic transfer of data to the cloud, at least one time per day For intelligent compaction projects, adequate GNSS coverage through the project limits is required for recording of the real-time, spatial location of equipment. Projects that are at least 90 percent covered by RTRN will be given preference The required spatial accuracy for the thermal profiling system is ±4 ft in the horizontal direction, and therefore, the requirements outlined in #4 are not required for this technology It is recommended that both IC and TP are used together on a single project. It is also recommended that if a grading project is using IC, and this project will have an asphalt pavement surface, that this project is also selected to use JC and TP on the asphalt pavement. This would allow for comparison of in-situ stiffness measurements between layers and cost savings in required resources (e.g., site calibration, modified design files, etc.).

October 31, 2014 ADVANCED MATERIALS AND TECHNOLOGY MANUAL Intelligent Compaction (IC) Method 3.1 Definitions Automatic Feedback Control automatically adjusts roller Operating Settings, such as vibration frequency and amplitude, based upon real-time feedback from the drum vibration measurement system Coverage is the total area resulting from Roller Passes on a given Lift/Layer (see Figure 3.1) Cumulative Measurement Pass Count is the Gridded Final Coverage Data for pass count Daily Percent Coverage (DPC) is the percent of the required daily compaction area where the minimum required Cumulative Measurement Pass Count is achieved Finishing Roller is the final roller used in the compaction process for the given Layer Gridded All Passes Data includes all Measurement Passes recorded for a given grid (see Figure 3.1). This data is generally used to build compaction curves for establishment of rolling patterns. Figure 3.1 Schematic of coverage, Gridded All Passes Data and Gridded Final Coverage Data

October 31, 2014 ADVANCED MATERIALS AND TECHNOLOGY MANUAL Gridded Data is processed from the raw data using meshes. The raw data is duplicated over the meshes for the entire roller drum width, resulting in multiple data points covering the drum width (see Figure 3.2). This process is used to track partial drum overlaps among passes. Mesh Roller Width Rolling Direction Data Point Figure 3.2 Schematic of gridded IC data Gridded Final Coverage Data summarizes the final (last) Measurement Passes recorded for a given grid (e.g., total pass count, last stiffness, last temperature [see Figure 3.1]) Instrumented Roller is a self-propelled roller integrated with a global position monitoring system and onboard documentation system that can display real-time color-coded maps of roller location, number of passes, roller speeds, and amplitude and vibration frequencies of the roller drum. Some systems are also equipped with drum vibration instrumentation, infrared temperature sensors, and/or Automatic Feedback Control. The onboard documentation system on these rollers would also display real-time color-coded maps of stiffness response or pavement surface temperatures, or both Instrumented Roller Failure is when the Instrumented Roller system does not collect and/or store data per the requirements of 2016 Quality Management Special IC Method S-xx.3.E.7 and S-xx.3.E.8, and/or the roller becomes inoperable Intelligent Compaction Measurement Value (ICMV) is the stiffness of the materials based on the response of the roller drum vibrations and underlying material responses Intelligent Compaction (IC) Roller is used synonymously with Instrumented Roller Intelligent Compaction Supervisor is the Contractor s person responsible for performance and compliance with intelligent compaction requirements.

October 31, 2014 ADVANCED MATERIALS AND TECHNOLOGY MANUAL Layer is the total thickness of each material type. It may be comprised of single or multiple Lifts Layer Identification (Layer ID) is the reference name of the material and lift currently being compacted (see example illustrated in Figure 3.3). Asphalt Pavement Surface/Wear Course (Layer ID = HMA L2) Asphalt Pavement Base Course (Layer ID = HMA L1) Base (Layer ID = Pre-grind, SFDR, or Cl 5) Subbase (Layer ID = Select Granular) Figure 3.3 Example of Layer Identifications (ID) Lift is a unit of material within a Layer that is placed for compaction Measurement Pass is a Roller Pass, performed by an Instrumented roller, where all required information (per 2016 Quality Management Special IC Method S-xx.3.E.8) is recorded in a Data File Mesh is a collection of vertices connected to other vertices that defines the shape of the roller drum in two (2) Dimensional (2D) polygons (typically multiple squares). The defined data mesh size is generally 0.3 m by 0.3 m (1 ft by 1 ft) in horizontal directions (see Figure 3.2) Onsite IC Support is the Contractor s personnel responsible for the onsite execution of the intelligent compaction requirements. The Onsite IC Support must also understand and perform the responsibilities per Table Operating Settings are roller settings (e.g., speed, direction, frequency, peak vertical force amplitude) Operator(s) of Instrumented Roller(s) is the Contractor s personnel operating instrumented roller(s). The operator must comply with the requirements of this specification and understand and perform the responsibilities per Table Project Percent Coverage (PPC) is the percent of required compaction area, for the project, where the minimum required Cumulative Measurement Pass Count is achieved Quality Control Personnel are the individuals employed by the Contractor to execute this work Raw Data is data recorded during compaction operations prior to the gridding process. It consists of one data point for a roller drum width, recorded at approximately 10 Hz or 0.3 m (1

October 31, 2014 ADVANCED MATERIALS AND TECHNOLOGY MANUAL 7 ft) intervals. Therefore, the data mesh (data footprint) is about one drum width by 0.3 m (1 ft) (see Figure 3.4). Data Foot Print Roller Width Data Point Figure 3.4 Schematic of raw data Roller Pass is the area covered by one width of the roller in a single direction. 3.2 Acronyms and Abbreviations DPC daily percent coverage IC intelligent compaction ICMV intelligent compaction measurement value Layer ID layer identification PPC project percent coverage 3.3 Check List for 2016 Quality Management (QM) Special Intelligent Compaction Method Table 3.1 provides a check list for items that are to be completed under the special provision by the Contractor, Department and/or both. 18 October 31, 2014 ADVANCED MATERIALS AND TECHNOLOGY MANUAL Design Files IC projects require the creation of background files created with a closed complex shape where the edge of the driving lanes are closed off at each end. The background files are used to clean the IC data sets for use in the Bases of Measurement. Additionally, loading of these background files onto the IC software and/or equipment allows the contractor to view, real-time, the locations of the given measurements during construction Creating a Background File with a Complex Shape and Alignment Opening the MicroStation File Copy a new seed file: pw:\\pw8i.ad.dot.state.mn.us:cadp\documents\caddstandards\mndotstandards\dot_micr O\seed\E2Dseed.dgn to your project folder and rename to Functional Area SP_ic.dgn (e.g. d _ic.dgn) Assign the County Coordinate System Name This will only need to be completed once per file, as it is saved in the File Settings. (a) Select Tools > Geographic > Select Geographic Coordinate System from the MicroStation main menu. (b) If the County has already been defined it will be listed in the dialog. The dialog will be blank if it has not been defined. See Figure 3.7. Figure 3.7 Snapshot of unassigned geographic coordinate system. (c) (d) Click Select from Library (second icon from the left). While one can navigate through the Library tab to find the county, it is easier to use the Search tab. Enter the county into the Search Text and select Find Now. See Figure 3.8. As illustrated in Figure 3.8, at least 3 lines for each county will appear. Select the US Foot option. Click Add to Favorites if it is a county you use often.

October 31, 2014 ADVANCED MATERIALS AND TECHNOLOGY MANUAL 16 Figure 3.8 Snapshot of county coordinate search library. (e) (f) Select OK to add the County to the Geographic Coordinate System dialog and to close the Select dialog. Review the Coordinate System, and if everything is correct, close the dialog. Figure 3.9 Snapshot of assigned geographic coordinate system. (g) Save these changes in MicroStation, otherwise, exiting and opening the file again will lose the county coordinate system. Additionally, update the server copy to save in ProjectWise Closed Complex Shape (a) Create a closed complex shape, for each driving lane, where the edge of the driving lanes are closed off at each end (See Figure 3.10).

October 31, 2014 ADVANCED MATERIALS AND TECHNOLOGY MANUAL 17 Figure 3.10 Snapshot of complex shape / line. (b) Save document as a DGN file. This file will be used on the instrumented roller s onboard display and in the cloud Computing mapping software. Include IC somewhere the design file name, to increase the awareness that this file is not in the standard format of typical design files and is the correct one to use on IC projects (e.g. d _ic.dgn). (Another format of the file can be created (e.g., DWG) by selecting File >Save As. See Figure 3.11.) Figure 3.11 Snapshot of save document feature. (c) Also save the design file as a KMZ (google earth) file. This file will be used with the intelligent construction data management tool Veda. (i) In the Background DGN, Turn off the weights, which are normally too heavy within Google Earth. (ii) Set the view to the area of interest. Please note that the larger the area, the fuzzier Google Earth is when using the zoom feature. (iii) Select Tools > Geographic > Export Google Earth (KML) File from the main MicroStation menu. (iv) A ProjectWise dialog will open where one can name the Google Earth file. Please note that it is creating a KMZ file, not KML as seen in the tool tip. Use the default name if a KMZ file has not already been created from this MicroStation file. Otherwise, change the name in order to save in PW. Click Save. (v) The following are some miscellaneous details related to the use of Google Earth.

October 31, 2014 ADVANCED MATERIALS AND TECHNOLOGY MANUAL 18 Google Earth opens and moves to the location of the file. One will see the Google Earth background, with the MicroStation drawing on top. See Figure Snapshot of alignment file on google earth background. If the MicroStation Elements appear dis-jointed or incomplete, toggle OFF then ON the location in the Places area of the side bar. This will refresh the elements to allow them to display properly. Zoom in and out using the wheel on the mouse. Pan by holding down the data point button on the mouse. If the view is drifting, click a data point on the screen. If the sidebar menu is not displayed, select View > Sidebar. Here one can turn off/ on the levels in the MicroStation File (e.g., Street Names, etc). To see the videolog tool, toggle on Street View in the lower left section of the sidebar (Layers section). Small cameras appear in the drawing. Click on one to open to Street view. To get back to the Top view, click the design file in the Places section in the Sidebar menu.
