2 ENTERPRISING GREATER BIRMINGHAM Greater Birmingham is an area at the very centre of the UK anchored by Birmingham, and the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, earning titles such as Workshop of the World and City of a Thousand Trades. This early industrial heritage aided the development of the Advanced Engineering sector, which began with bicycles, progressed to motor vehicles, and has now led to ground-breaking developments in hydrogen fuel cell, electric and hybrid vehicle technology. Business Birmingham, Invest Black Country and Solihull for Success are inward investment agencies working together to attract foreign direct investment. Their work also includes the promotion of development in the area as part of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) City Region Project, on behalf of the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and the Black Country LEP. Home to over 6,335 advanced engineering companies, Greater Birmingham is a hub of advanced engineering activity. Together with investment in extensive advanced engineering sites, a highly skilled workforce and a strong precision engineering pedigree, it is an ideal location for firms to operate, grow, and carry out high value Research and Development. Additionally, the presence of leading manufacturers and a strong supply chain has created huge opportunities for SMEs to thrive and expand. Aerospace is a globally integrated industry with core competencies in systems that power and control aircraft. Part of this will contribute to the High Speed Rail (HS2) project within the Greater Birmingham region. High Speed Rail (HS2) is a major government led investment project which will see the development of a new railway line between London and the West Midlands and the North of England with trains operating at speeds of up to 250mph faster than any current operating speed in Europe. Phase 1 of the estimated 22 billion project will place Birmingham city centre within 49 minutes of London, radically enhancing the region s rail connectivity to both national and international audiences and accelerating the city s economic growth potential. HIGH SPEED RAIL (HS2) BIRMINGHAM HQ The construction and engineering headquarters will be based in Birmingham, at the heart of the HS2 route, and will house 1,500 employees including key decision makers and purchasers for the project with the first phase expected to open in HS2 COLLEGE Birmingham and the wider region is set for a major skills boost and will establish itself as a global centre of excellence for rail engineering as the city bids to co-host the national High Speed Rail (HS2) College. Up to 2,000 apprentices will be trained at the college split between Birmingham Science Park Aston and Doncaster Lakeside Campus set to open in Birmingham was chosen for its location at the heart of the high speed rail network. The college will train the next generation of engineers who will build and maintain the rolling stock, track and infrastructure of HS2 and also ensure a pool of locally-trained workers with the right skills to draw upon for future projects. 3

5 BIRMINGHAM CURZON The proposed Birmingham Curzon Station will become the City Centre terminus for HS2. Curzon will effectively be at the centre of the national High Speed Rail network providing direct services to London, Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield. The first phase of the network, connecting Birmingham to London, will be open in The station will be the first completely new central station in over 100 years and with 7 platforms and a building 800m long, the station is set to become a new landmark in the heart of Birmingham. City and regionwide connections will be integrated with direct access to the Metro tram network and both Moor Street Station and New Street Station within a 2 and 8 minute walk respectively. Through new public squares and plazas the station will be connected to the surrounding retail and commercial core, the Digbeth Creative Quarter and the university and business district of Eastside. MIDLAND METRO A major extension of the Metro tram service is currently under development, creating a fast link between two of Birmingham s major rail stations, New Street and Snow Hill which collectively bring 3.5 million passengers a year into the heart of the city centre. This will see the Metro running to Centenary Square with proposals for a further extension to Edgbaston, and in the east of the city centre extension of the Metro to Eastside serving the HS2 Curzon Station, further enhancing Birmingham city centre s transport links with the wider region. This substantial investment in the Metro system is part of the Growth Deal with Government, which commits in the region of 130 million to provide a package of investment in a range of HS2 related projects, significantly enhancing connectivity to the Curzon Station and directly linking HS2 into the local transport system. NEW STREET GATEWAY Birmingham New Street Station is the city's largest railway station in the city centre and is the major rail network hub in the Midlands.
