3 PLEASE JOIN SBLI IN WELCOMING OUR 2013 FACULTY Douglas G. Baird is the Harry A. Bigelow Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Chicago. He received his undergraduate degree from Yale University summa cum laude and his J.D. from Stanford. Baird joined University of Chicago s faculty in 1980 and served as its Dean from 1994 to He has been a visiting professor at Stanford, Harvard, and Yale. Currently Scholar in Residence at the American College of Bankruptcy, Baird was Vice Chair of the National Bankruptcy Conference from 1997 until His one-volume overview of U.S. bankruptcy law, Elements of Bankruptcy, is now in its fifth edition. Russell M. Blain is a shareholder of Stichter Riedel Blain & Prosser in Tampa and represents debtors, trustees, committees, creditors, and purchasers in restructuring, workout, and bankruptcy cases. He is a fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy and a subcommittee vice chair of the Business Bankruptcy Committee of the Business Law Section of the American Bar Association. Blain is past chair of the Business Law Section of The Florida Bar and of that section s Bankruptcy/UCC Committee, past president of The Tampa Bay Bankruptcy Bar Association, immediate past president of the Hillsborough County Bar Foundation, and immediate past president of the Ferguson-White American Inn of Court. He is a graduate of Vanderbilt University and the University of Florida College of Law. Blain is listed in Best Lawyers in America, Florida Super Lawyers (as one of the top 100 lawyers in Florida in all practice areas), Florida Legal Elite, and Chambers USA. He frequently speaks and writes on restructuring, insolvency, and bankruptcy topics. G. Eric Brunstad, Jr. is a partner at Dechert, LLP where he serves as co-chair of the firm s appellate practice group. He has argued ten cases in the U.S. Supreme Court and has worked on over 30 other matters in the Supreme Court, including bankruptcy. He has also argued and briefed numerous cases in most of the federal courts of appeals, involving various matters. Eric has argued two en banc bankruptcy matters in the Third and Eighth Circuits. In addition to his practice, he is a frequent Visiting Lecturer of Law at the Yale Law School where he teaches courses on bankruptcy, argument and reason, federal jurisdiction, commercial transactions, secured transactions, and international insolvency law. He began teaching at Yale in 1990, has taught at the Harvard Law School, and is teaching at the NYU School of Law for John F. Cannizzaro began his law practice in Maryville, Ohio in 1980 and is senior partner of the law firm, Cannizzaro, Bridges, Jillisky & Streng, LLC. He concentrates his practice to the area of consumer bankruptcy law. Mr. Cannizzaro is a frequent lecturer and writer on Bankruptcy matters. He was Debtor s counsel in the cases of First Union Mortgage Corporation vs. Eubanks, 219 B.R. 468, 6th Cir BAP 1998 (In re: Eubanks), and Storey vs. Pees, 392 BR 266, 6th Cir BAP 2008 (In re Storey). Mr. Cannizzaro currently serves as the Chairman of the ECF Rules Committee for the Southern District of Ohio and sits on the Judicial Liaison Committee for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Columbus. He is a member of numerous professional organizations including the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys and the Thomas F. Waldron American Bankruptcy Law Forum. Andrea E. Celli has served as the Chapter 13 Standing Trustee for the Northern District of New York in Albany since Her office currently administers approximately 5,000 pending Chapter 13 cases and disburses approximately $25 Million to creditors each year. Ms. Celli received a J.D. from Albany Law School of Union University and an LL.M. in American Banking Law Studies from Boston University School of Law. She is a Past-President of the NACTT and of the NACTT Academy for Consumer Bankruptcy Education. Ms. Celli is a frequent lecturer for the NACTT and American Bankruptcy Institute. Jaime L. Dodge is a professor at the University of Georgia, where she teaches Bankruptcy, Dispute Systems Design, and Complex Litigation. Prior to joining the UGA faculty, she served as a Climenko Fellow and Lecturer in Law at Harvard Law School. Professor Dodge frequently serves as a trainer or consultant on dispute resolution systems design and implementation, with particular emphasis on arbitration, class actions, and multi-party disputes. Before teaching, she practiced for a number of years with Paul Hastings and Gibson Dunn, as well as serving as a Fellow at the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution. Professor Dodge is a graduate of Dartmouth College, and holds a master s degree in dispute resolution from Pepperdine Law School and a J.D. from Harvard Law School, where she served as the Supreme Court chairperson of the Harvard Law Review. Cynthia F. Grimes received her B.A. in French and Art History, summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from Kansas University, and her J.D. from Kansas University Law School, where she was Associate Editor of the Law Review. She clerked for the Honorable John E. Rees of the Kansas Court of Appeals from 1984 to 1986, and for the Honorable James A. Pusateri, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Topeka, Kansas, from 1986 to She formed her current firm with partner Steven R. Rebein in Grimes & Rebein, L.C. is located in Lenexa, Kansas, and is a bankruptcy boutique, practicing solely in consumer and business bankruptcy, creditors rights, commercial workouts, and related fields. Cynthia has formerly published an annual column reviewing 8th Circuit bankruptcy cases of interest for the national publication, Norton s Bankruptcy Law Advisor. She is a Fellow in the American College of Bankruptcy, a member of various bankruptcy organizations, and an author on various bankruptcy-related topics. Bobby Guy is a deal lawyer who leads companies through financial distress to find successful outcomes, and who helps funds and companies acquire distressed opportunities. He is the author of Distress to Success: A Survival Handbook for Struggling Companies and Buyers of Distressed Opportunities. Bobby is a member at Frost Brown Todd based in the firm s Nashville office, and commutes to engagements across the country. His work includes both transactions and litigation. He is recognized in The Best Lawyers in America and Mid-South Super Lawyers, and is the recipient of the 2010 Turnaround of the Year Award from the Atlanta Turnaround Management Association for his work as debtor s counsel in the Chapter 11 restructuring and sale of Cosmolab, Inc. Bobby is the co-chair of the American Bankruptcy Institute s Health Care Committee, and an editor of the ABI s Healthcare Insolvency Manual. He is a frequent speaker and published author on distressed investing and healthcare-related topics. Jan Hamilton is the Chapter 13 Trustee for Topeka, Kansas. He has served in this position since Hamilton is a graduate of Washburn University and Washburn School of Law. Prior to his appointment, he was in private practice for 25 years with many years of experience in bankruptcy, related areas and litigation. Hamilton is a Fellow in the American College of Bankruptcy. He is a frequent speaker at legal seminars, locally and nationally. Hamilton also is a past adjunct bankruptcy professor at Washburn University School of Law and occasionally writes for national publications. He was counsel of record in the U.S. Supreme Court case of Hamilton v. Lanning. Margaret Dee McGarity has been a United States Bankruptcy Judge for the Eastern District of Wisconsin since 1987, having been appointed for a second fourteen year term in She served as Chief Judge from 2003 to Judge McGarity is a frequent lecturer on various marital property and bankruptcy related topics, especially on the interrelationships between family law and the Bankruptcy Code. She is a co-author of Marital Property Law in Wisconsin, published by the State Bar of Wisconsin, a co-author of Collier Family Law and the Bankruptcy Code, published by Matthew Bender/LexisNexis, and a contributing author of Collier on Bankruptcy, also published by Matthew Bender/LexisNexis. She is the author of numerous articles dealing with the practical aspects of bankruptcy practice and is a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy. James F. Molleur practices law with offices in Biddeford and Portland, Maine, as Molleur Law Office, with four attorneys. He concentrates his practice in bankruptcy primarily representing debtors, particularly consumer and small business debtors. Jim received his B.A. in economics, magna cum laude, from Bowdon College and his J.D. from the University of Maine School of Law. He has lectured and written materials on bankruptcy for the American Bankruptcy Institute, the Maine State Bar Association, the National Business Institute, National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys, and the Maine Federal District Court Conference. He is also a certified specialist in consumer bankruptcy law by the American Board of Certification. Jim is a member of the York County and Maine State Bar Associations, the American Bankruptcy Institute and the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys. He is admitted to the Maine and Federal District Court bar, the First Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court. Sally S. Neely is Senior Counsel with Sidley Austin LLP in Los Angeles. She has practiced for more than 35 years in the area of corporate workouts and Chapter 11 reorganizations. She received her B.A. and J.D. from Stanford, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Order of the Coif. She was an Assistant Professor at Harvard Law School during Ms. Neely writes and teaches extensively. She regularly works with Congress regarding bankruptcy legislation as Chair of the Committee on Legislation of the National Bankruptcy Conference (NBC). She is also a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy, for which she has served various leadership roles. Among other accolades, Ms. Neely has been identified as a leading bankruptcy lawyer in Chambers USA: America s Leading Business Lawyers from , has been recognized in the editions of The Best Lawyers in America, and was recently named by Best Lawyers as the 2012 Lawyer of the Year in Los Angeles Litigation Bankruptcy. Grant W. Newton, Professor Emeritus of Accounting, Pepperdine University, is the co-author of Bankruptcy and Insolvency Accounting; Practice and Procedure, Bankruptcy Taxation and the author of Corporate Bankruptcy. As the Executive Director of AIRA, he developed and teaches the three courses that lead to the Certified Insolvency and Restructuring Advisor (CIRA) designation A CIRA, CPA/CFF and CMA. He received a Ph.D. from NYU. Dr. Newton was a member of the AICPA s Task Force on Financial Reporting by Entities in Reorganization Under the Bankruptcy Code that resulted in the issuance of the Statement of Position 90-7 (ASC 852). He is co-author of Consulting Services Practice Aid 02-1: Business Valuation in Bankruptcy and Providing Bankruptcy & Reorganization Services Practice Aid and editor of 2005 Bankruptcy Revisions: Implications for Business and Financial Advisors. Dr. Newton serves as a consultant and expert witness on issues dealing with financial reporting in areas related to restructuring and bankruptcy. Lance E. Olsen is the managing partner of Routh Crabtree Olsen, P.S. His practice areas include bankruptcy, creditors rights, title issues, and related litigation. He received his B.A., magna cum laude, from Western Washington University and his J.D., magna cum laude from Seattle University. Lance is a member of the ABI and an Associate Member of the National Association of Chapter 13 Trustees. He is admitted to the Washington State Bar, Oregon State Bar, and Idaho State Bar. Lance is an active member of USFN, presently serving on the board of directors and the immediate past Chief Financial Officer. He has provided on-site training within the mortgage servicing industry and is a frequent lecturer on creditors rights. Lance is a past recipient of the USFN s Member of the Year award, is AV- Rated by Martindale Hubble, and currently listed as both a Washington Super Lawyer and among the U.S. News Best Attorneys for Creditor s Rights. William H. Patrick, III is a Member of Heller, Draper, Patrick & Horn, LLC in New Orleans and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He received a J.D. from an accelerated undergraduate-law school program from Louisiana State University. Mr. Patrick concentrates his practice in corporate bankruptcy, corporate workouts, and financial restructuring, representing debtors, committees, trustees, equity investors and other parties in interest. He speaks frequently at seminars and continuing legal education events. Mr. Patrick is a Fellow in the American College of Bankruptcy, was a member of the Louisiana Law Review, and was appointed Order of the Coif and Phi Kappa Phi. He is listed in The Best Lawyers in America, Louisiana Super Lawyers, and has been identified as one of Band 1 Leading Individuals Reorganization in Chambers USA. He has also been recognized as Best Lawyers Lawyer of the Year (Litigation Bankruptcy) in New Orleans for 2011 and John Rao is an attorney with the National Consumer Law Center, Inc. He focuses on consumer credit and bankruptcy issues and is a frequent panelist and instructor for the same. Mr. Rao has served as an expert witness in court cases and has testified in Congress on consumer matters. He is a contributing author and editor of NCLC s Consumer Bankruptcy Law and Practice; and a co-author of NCLC s Foreclosures and Bankruptcy Basics. Mr. Rao is also a contributing author to Collier on Bankruptcy and the Collier Bankruptcy Practice Guide. He serves as a member of the federal Judicial Conference Advisory Committee on Bankruptcy Rules, appointed by Chief Justice John Roberts in He is a conferee of the National Bankruptcy Conference, Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy, vice-president of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys, member of the editorial board of Collier on Bankruptcy, and former board member for the ABI. Frank J. Santoro was appointed as a U.S. Bankruptcy Judge on February 21, 2008, sitting in Norfolk and Newport News, Virginia. He received undergraduate degrees, with honors, in political science, and economics and finance from Allegheny College, where he was also a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He received his J.D. from the Marshall Wythe School of Law at the College of William and Mary. Prior to his appointment, Judge Santoro was the managing partner of Marcus, Santoro & Kozak, P.C., where his practice concentrated in bankruptcy, corporate reorganizations and corporate finance. He served as standing Chapter 13 Trustee beginning in 1987 and also a Chapter 7 Panel Trustee from 1981 to He served as a law clerk to Judge Hal J. Bonney, Jr. He has been a frequent speaker and is a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy. In 2003, Judge Santoro was selected by his peers as the outstanding bankruptcy lawyer in Virginia. Brett Weiss, a senior partner at Chung & Press, LLC, represents people and businesses in all phases of bankruptcy and lectures nationally on bankruptcy issues. He is the co-author of Chapter 11 for Individual Debtors and author of Not Dead Yet: Bankruptcy After BAPCPA. With his law partner, Daniel Press, and in conjunction with Max Gardner s Bankruptcy Boot Camps, Mr. Weiss has recorded a basic bankruptcy training series, and led Chapter 11 training boot camps. He is the Maryland State Chair for the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys (NACBA), a founding member of the Bankruptcy Law Network, on the board of the Maryland State Bar Consumer Bankruptcy Council, and a member of the ABI, the Bankruptcy Bar Association of Maryland, and the Civil Justice Network.
