4 PLEASE JOIN SBLI IN WELCOMING OUR 2014 FACULTY William Houston Brown is a retired United States Bankruptcy Judge for the Western District of Tennessee. Judge Brown is a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute, having served on its Board and Executive Committee, and is a Fellow in the American College of Bankruptcy. He is the author or co-author of the Bankruptcy Exemption Manual, 2005 Bankruptcy Reform Legislation with Analysis first and second editions, Bankruptcy and Domestic Relations Manual and The Law of Debtors and Creditors, and is a principal contributing editor for Norton Bankruptcy Law and Practice, third edition. Judge Brown is also contributing author of an online Chapter 13 treatise. In addition, he is currently Adviser to the Academy for Consumer Bankruptcy Education, the education arm of the National Association of Chapter 13 Trustees. Judge Brown received his law degree from the University of Tennessee College of Law, where he was Order of the Coif. Russell M. Blain is a shareholder of Stichter Riedel Blain & Prosser in Tampa and represents debtors, trustees, committees, creditors, and purchasers in restructuring, workout and bankruptcy cases. He is a fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy and is a subcommittee vice chair of the Business Bankruptcy Committee of the Business Law Section of the American Bar Association. Mr. Blain is past chair of the Business Law Section of The Florida Bar and of that section s Bankruptcy/UCC Committee, and is a past president of The Tampa Bay Bankruptcy Bar Association, the Hillsborough County Bar Foundation and the Ferguson-White American Inn of Court. He is listed in Best Lawyers in America, Florida Super Lawyers, Florida Legal Elite and Chambers USA. Mr. Blain frequently speaks and writes on restructuring, insolvency and bankruptcy topics. He is a graduate of Vanderbilt University and the University of Florida College of Law. William E. Brewer, Jr. is the founder of The Brewer Law Firm in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he focuses on both consumer and commercial bankruptcy. As a Board Certified Consumer Bankruptcy Specialist, Mr. Brewer has represented the debtors in the series of Sears cases in the Eastern District of North Carolina, dealing with the effect of purchase money security interests in bankruptcy cases. He served as law clerk to Judge R.A. Hedrick of the North Carolina Court of Appeals before beginning private practice in Mr. Brewer served as President of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys from 2010 through 2012, and is a fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy. He graduated from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill with an A.B. in Economics in 1973, and earned his J.D. with honors from the same institution in Mark D. Collins is chair of Richard Layton & Finger s Bankruptcy and Corporate Restructuring Department, where he has particular experience representing debtors, institutional lenders, creditors committees and acquirers. Mr. Collins has served as lead counsel in several major Chapter 11 cases and as co-counsel in many of the largest Chapter 11 filings in history. He also has an active secured lender practice. A frequent lecturer at national corporate restructuring and bankruptcy seminars, Mr. Collins is the past Co-Chair of the American Bankruptcy Institute, Finance & Banking Committee, and past Chair of the Secured Creditors Subcommittee of the Business Reorganization Committee. He is Co-Chair of the Delaware State Bar Association, Bankruptcy Section, Legislation Committee and is on the American Bar Association, Business Law Section, Business Bankruptcy Committee. Mr. Collins is also an American College of Bankruptcy Fellow. Michael L. Cook,a partner at Schulte Roth & Zabel, devotes his practice to corporate restructuring, business reorganization, workouts and creditors rights litigation. Mr. Cook is president of the American College of Bankruptcy. He previously chaired the College s Board of Regents and its Pro Bono Committee. Mr. Cook serves as lead editor and contributing author of Bankruptcy Litigation Manual, is on the editorial boards of Pratt s Journal of Bankruptcy Law and The Bankruptcy Strategist, is a contributing author to Collier Bankruptcy Guide (Appeals) and Collier on Bankruptcy, and co-authored Creditors Rights, Debtors Protection and Bankruptcy and A Practical Guide to the Bankruptcy Reform Act. Mr. Cook has served as an Adjunct Professor at New York University School of Law, and has taught Business Law at Lehman College of the City University of New York. Mr. Cook received his A.B. from Columbia University and his J.D. from New York University School of Law. D. Sims Crawford is the Chapter 13 Standing Trustee for the United States Bankruptcy Court, Northern District of Alabama, Southern Division. Prior to being named Trustee, he served as the Trustee s Staff Attorney and was engaged in private practice in Birmingham, Alabama. Mr. Crawford served as Chair for the Bankruptcy & Commercial Law Section of the Birmingham Bar Association, and served on the Board of the Birmingham Bar Foundation. He currently serves as Secretary of the National Association of Chapter 13 Trustees (NACTT), as well as a member of its Due Process Committee, STACS Committee, and Staff Symposium Committee. Mr. Crawford is also certified as a Professional in Human Resources (PHR), and is certified in Training and Development. Mr. Crawford earned his B.A. from the University of Alabama and his J.D. from Cumberland School of Law. Franklin Drake is a partner at Smith Debnam Narron Drake Saintsing & Myers LLP, where he concentrates his practice in the areas of creditors rights, bankruptcy and commercial litigation. Mr. Drake has taught classes on bankruptcy and commercial law for the Indiana Bankers Association at Butler University, the National Association of State-Chartered Credit Union Supervisors and various states Credit Union Leagues. He also served as speaker for several student loan lending agencies, credit unions, and state and local bar associations. Additionally, Mr. Drake has held compliance seminars for his clients to update them on the ever-changing creditors laws. Mr. Drake earned his B.A. from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1975 and his J.D. from the same institution in G. Eric Brunstad, Jr. is a partner at Dechert, LLP where he serves as co-chair of the firm s appellate practice group. He has argued ten cases in the U.S. Supreme Court and has worked on over 30 other matters in the Supreme Court, including bankruptcy. Mr. Brunstad has also argued and briefed numerous cases in most of the federal courts of appeals, involving various matters. He has argued two en banc bankruptcy matters in the Third and Eighth Circuits. In addition to his practice, he is a frequent Visiting Lecturer of Law at the Yale Law School, where he teaches courses on bankruptcy, argument and reason, federal jurisdiction, commercial transactions, secured transactions, and international insolvency law. Mr. Brunstad began teaching at Yale in 1990, has taught at the Harvard Law School, and taught at the NYU School of Law in Carey Dalton Ebert is President Emeritus of the National Association of Bankruptcy Attorneys (NACBA) and was on the NACBA Board of Directors from 1999 to Her memberships include the National Association of Bankruptcy Trustees, Tarrant County Debtor Bar Association, Tarrant County Bar Association, Panelist at NACBA Conventions since 1998, Speaker at the Alabama Bar Institute, 2004, and Speaker at the Southeastern Bankruptcy Law Institute, 2005, 2007 and Ms. Ebert also served as President of the Northeast Tarrant County Bar Association and as a Panel Trustee in Bankruptcy for the Northern District of Texas (1986 to present). She is Board Certified in Consumer Bankruptcy State Bar of Texas, 1991, and in Consumer Bankruptcy by American Bankruptcy Board of Certification, Ms. Ebert practices with her husband in Fort Worth, Texas.
5 Jessica D. Gabel is an associate professor of law at Georgia State University, where she teaches bankruptcy and scientific and forensic evidence. Prior to joining GSU, she clerked for the Honorable Peter T. Fay on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. Professor Gabel consults on criminal and bankruptcy matters, and has engaged in numerous pro bono criminal defense representations. Prior to becoming a professor, she practiced at Covington & Burling LLP, where her practice focused on white-collar crime and bankruptcy. Professor Gabel also taught evidence, forensic evidence and bankruptcy at the University of California Hastings School of Law. She is the author of Law of Lender Liability and co-author of ABI s Bankruptcy Appeals Manual: Winning Your Bankruptcy Appeal, Second Edition. Professor Gabel received her J.D. magna cum laude from the University of Miami School of Law and graduated summa cum laude from the University of Central Florida. Bobby Guy is a deal lawyer who specializes in fixing, buying, and selling companies in special situations. He is the author of Distress to Success: A Survival Handbook for Struggling Companies and Buyers of Distressed Opportunities, and a lead editor of the American Bankruptcy Institute s Healthcare Insolvency Manual. Mr. Guy led the Chapter 11 bankruptcy of FDA-regulated cosmetics manufacturer Cosmolab in 2010, for which he received the Turnaround of the Year Award, and acted as lead debtor s counsel in the Chapter 11 of ice cream maker Dippin Dots in He has appeared on Fox News, is board certified in Business Bankruptcy Law, and is trained as a professional negotiator. Mr. Guy is a member at Frost Brown Todd, based in the firm s Nashville office, and commutes to engagements across the country. Henry E. Hildebrand, III has served as Standing Trustee for Chapter 13 matters in the Middle District of Tennessee since 1982, and as Standing Chapter 12 Trustee for that district since He is also of counsel to the Nashville law firm of Lassiter, Tidwell, Davis, PLLC. Mr. Hildebrand is a fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy and the Nashville Bar Foundation. He is Board Certified in consumer bankruptcy law by the American Board of Certification, and is Chairman of the Legislative and Legal Affairs committee for the National Association of Chapter 13 Trustees (NACTT). In addition, Mr. Hildebrand is on the Board of Directors for the NACTT Academy for Consumer Bankruptcy Education, Inc. and is an adjunct faculty member for the Nashville School of Law and St. Johns University School of Law. He graduated from Vanderbilt University and received his J.D. from the National Law Center of George Washington University. Margaret Mahoney is a bankruptcy judge in the Southern District of Alabama. She has served in Mobile, Alabama since December Judge Mahoney has also been a bankruptcy judge in the District of Minnesota and the Southern District of Texas. From 1989 to 1993, she was a partner in Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP, working in the Houston and Dallas offices. She is a member of the American College of Bankruptcy, was Editor in Chief of the American Bankruptcy Law Journal, and is a frequent speaker at continuing legal education programs. Judge Mahoney graduated from the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minnesota with Phi Beta Kappa honors, and graduated with honors from the University of Minnesota Law School. Jeffrey W. Morris is Professor Emeritus at the University of Dayton School of Law. He was the Robert Zinman Scholar in Residence at the American Bankruptcy Institute, and was the Southeastern Bankruptcy Law Institute Distinguished Visiting Professor of Law at Georgia State University College of Law. Prior to entering teaching, Professor Morris practiced bankruptcy law in Atlanta. He has also served as the Reporter to the Advisory Committee on the Bankruptcy Rules. He is also a member of the National Bankruptcy Conference and a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy. Professor Morris is the co-author of Problems and Materials on Debtor Creditor Law (5th edition, 2013) (Aspen Publishing). He is Counsel to the law firm of Porter, Wright, Morris & Arthur, where his practice focuses on bankruptcy and commercial law matters. Professor Morris received his J.D. from Washington & Lee University, where he also served as Executive Editor of the Law Review. William T. Russell, Jr. is a Partner at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP in the Firm s litigation department. He represents clients in a wide variety of commercial disputes including banking litigation, bankruptcy and reorganization matters, securities litigation and contractual and transactional disputes, and has tried cases in state and federal courts, as well as in arbitral proceedings. Mr. Russell is admitted to practice before the Southern, Eastern and Northern District Courts of New York, the United States District of Arizona, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second and Fourth Circuits, the United States Supreme Court and all Courts of the State of New York. He received his A.B., magna cum laude, from Princeton University and his J.D. from New York University School of Law. Michael D. Sabbath is the Southeastern Bankruptcy Law Institute/ W. Homer Drake, Jr. Endowed Chair in Bankruptcy Law at Mercer University School of Law, where he has taught since Professor Sabbath currently teaches in the areas of contracts, commercial law and bankruptcy topics on which he frequently writes and speaks about. He is a national lecturer for BARBRI, giving lectures on contracts and commercial law topics. Professor Sabbath has served the State Bar of Georgia as Reporter for the Subcommittees on uniform Commercial Code Articles 2A and 4A, as well as revised Articles 3, 4 and 8. He received his B.A. from the University of Wisconsin, graduating Phi Beta Kappa, and his J.D. from Emory University School of Law in 1975, where he served as an editor of the Emory Law Journal and was a member of the Order of the Coif. Professor Sabbath also earned an LL.M. Degree from Columbia University School of Law. Frank J. Santoro is a United States Bankruptcy Judge in Norfolk and Newport News, Virginia. Prior to his appointment, he was the managing partner of Marcus, Santoro & Kozak, P.C., where his practice concentrated in bankruptcy, corporate reorganizations and corporate finance. Judge Santoro served as Standing Chapter 13 Trustee and a Chapter 7 Panel Trustee. He served as a law clerk to Judge Hal J. Bonney, Jr. Judge Santoro is a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy. In 2003, he was selected by his peers as the outstanding bankruptcy lawyer in Virginia. He received undergraduate degrees, with honors, in political science, economics and finance from Allegheny College, where he was also a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Judge Santoro received his J.D. from the Marshall Wythe School of Law at the College of William and Mary. Harvey R. Miller is a Senior Partner in the law firm of Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP. Mr. Miller has taught in numerous law schools, including New York University Law School, Yale Law School and Columbia University School of Law. He is a member of the National Bankruptcy Conference, and a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy and the American Bar Foundation.
