3 Interior Design at Bellevue College Overview Mission Degree Options The Bellevue College Interior Design Program is an established, well-respected program in the Seattle area. Since its inception in 1982, our program has grown from a two-year associate degree program to a CIDAaccredited four-year baccalaureate degree with approximately 400 full-time students. Located in one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the country, the program provides students with substantial opportunities to connect with the local design community. Along with a core of qualified full-time faculty, the program engages members of the local practitioner community as adjunct faculty and guest critics. The majority of our students are from the Seattle-Bellevue region, but a growing international student population adds to an already rich diversity of cultural, social, and educational perspectives. The Interior Design Department at Bellevue College empowers our students to realize their potential and goals through a design education that is responsible, rigorous, and relevant. The Associate of Arts in Interior Studies is a two-year degree open to anyone interested in a career in interior design. Graduates have found employment in sales, customer service, residential design, or professional support. The degree also forms the foundation for entry into the Bachelor of Applied Arts in Interior Design program. The Bachelor of Applied Arts in Interior Design (BAA) offers a broadly-based and professionally-relevant curriculum that embraces the responsibility of preparing and inspiring the designers of the future. The BAA program provides a learning environment based on a foundation of holistic, creative problem-solving, and is accredited as a professional level degree by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA). The BAA curriculum is an upper-division course of study for students who have completed an Associate of Arts degree or higher (or equivalent), in one of the following degree categories: Interior Design, Interior Architecture, Architecture or Industrial Design. The degree offers a combination of core courses, general education and electives that help students achieve their particular career goals. Faculty Academic Advising Information Sessions The Interior Design faculty possess multifaceted and forward-thinking expertise in architecture, design history, residential and commercial interiors, lighting, space plan ning, presentation and computeraided design. Full-time faculty are actively engaged in teaching at all levels of the curriculum, as well as participating in profes sional work, publication and research. Part-time faculty are practicing professional architects and designers and offer students firsthand exposure to current work and com munity networking. Students pursuing their degree in Interior Design are assigned a full-time faculty advisor. Faculty advisors help counsel students on career and degree planning, transfer course evaluations, and graduation require ments. To learn more about our AA and BAA programs, please make arrangements to attend a program information session. The schedule can be viewed at 03

4 Facilities Professional Connections Internships Employment Listserve The Interior Design Program is located in the L Building of the Bellevue College campus and the majority of our courses are held here too. We have two computer laboratories with Revit, AutoCAD, SketchUp, Rhinoceros, Adobe Creative Cloud, and other crucial programs. A resource library with current materials and periodicals supports educational and design specification needs. Student members of professional organizations such as ASID, IIDA and NWSID serve in leadership positions, promote community service, and build important networking contacts. The Bellevue College Interior Design Student Association (IDSA) links students to professionals in the industry through their sponsored Speaker Series and other events throughout the year. Prominent industry professionals contribute to the classroom learning environment as guest critics and speakers, and a distinguished Professional Advisory Board provides our program with curriculum guidance and feedback on industry trends. The Bachelors of Applied Arts curriculum features a strong practical learning component that includes a required professional internship of 150 hours. This experience immerses our students in meaningful work and provides vital real-world profes sional experience within architecture firms, interior design firms, retail businesses, government agen cies and other organizations. Internships can help build important professional connections and transfer to full-time employ ment for graduates.
