Pevey Career Record TODAY S GAME: The Iowa Cubs and Nashville Sounds, Triple-A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics, play the second game of a four-game series today at Principal Park. This is the sixth game of the season between the two teams. Iowa is third in the American Northern Division, 7.0 games behind the Oklahoma City Dodgers. The Sounds are third in the American Southern Division, 7.0 games back of Round Rock. LAST NIGHT: Left-hander Tyler Ihrig joined Iowa last night for a spot start and kept the Cubs in the game, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks in 5.0 innings. He struck out three in his Triple-A debut, however the I-Cubs fell to Nashville 6-3. Christian Villanueva and Javy Baez homered in multi-hit efforts to back Ihrig, but the Iowa bullpen faltered down the stretch. Righty Armando Rivero allowed a sixth-inning run, and Gonzalez Germen gave up three runs in the seventh, his first runs allowed of the season with Iowa. Sounds lefty Brad Mills beat Iowa, allowing three runs on eight hits in 6.0 innings for his first win of the season. Mills was aided by four double plays behind him, the most twin-killings turned by an opponent against Iowa this season. WAKE AND RAKE: Iowa has 29 scheduled day games in So far, Iowa is 4-6 in such contests. Iowa is 2-5 in day games at Principal Park. The 2014 I-Cubs rather enjoyed the early start times, going 30-9 in day games last season, the best mark in the Pacific Coast League. Iowa plays day baseball both today and Thursday in this series. FIRST STRIKE: Iowa has allowed 27 runs in the first inning this season, the most of any inning. Conversely, Iowa has only scored 11 first-inning runs themselves. The Cubs are 4-14 when the opponent scores first, and 11-3 when they draw first blood. Iowa has also had trouble coming from behind in the later innings. The Cubs are 0-12 when trailing after the seventh inning, and have only scored 16 runs in the eighth and ninth innings combined this year. SHORT-HANDED: Iowa added left-hander Tyler Ihrig to the roster yesterday, filling the active roster to 25 players. It was the first time since April 30 that Iowa played a game with a full active 25-man roster. The I-Cubs have recorded 45 transactions this season, but just three in the last week. NASHVILLE: Today is the second game of a fourgame series, and the sixth of 16 scheduled games between the Cubs and Sounds this season. Nashville returns to Principal Park August Iowa heads back to First Tennessee Park July Last year, the teams split the season series 8-8. Each team won its home slate 5-3. Iowa is 3-2 against the Sounds in 2015, taking three of four last week in Nashville but losing game one last night. Last week s series win was the first for Iowa at Nashville since The Sounds lead the all-time PCL series Iowa is all-time against the Oakland A s Triple-A affiliates. REHAB REPORT: Right-hander Dallas Beeler has made four rehab starts for Iowa. He is 0-2 with a ERA (18ER/15.2IP) since joining the team April 25 from Extended Spring Training where he was dealing with right shoulder inflammation. Left-hander Tsuyoshi Wada has made five rehab starts with Iowa this season. Wada joined Iowa April 17 from XST where he was nursing a left groin strain. He is 0-3 with a 3.25 ERA (10ER/27.2IP) and 23 strikeouts. GOING STREAKING: John Andreoli is on a season-high five-game hitting streak. He is 8-for-19 with 3 doubles, a triple and five stolen bases during that time. It is Andreoli s third streak of at least four games this year. Meanwhile, Arismendy Alcantara is on a six-game hitting streak. It is his second streak of six games this season. Despite the length of the streak, he is just 6-for-25 during that time with 11 strikeouts. Finally, today s starting pitcher, Donn Roach, is on a four-game personal winning streak. It is the first time in his career he has won four consecutive starts. SHORT HOPS: Iowa is 0-3 on Wednesday this season.... Javy Baez is on a three-game hitting streak, his second of the season.... Christian Villanueva s three-hit night last night was his first of the season.... John Andreoli has swiped eight bases in his last seven games, and is now second in the Pacific Coast League with 12 steals.... Arismendy Alcantara is tied for second in the league with three triples. He led the PCL in that category in ON THIS DAY: Exactly one year ago today, Iowa was twohit in a 8-0 loss to Nashville at Principal Park. 2 TODAY S STARTING PITCHER #15 Donn Roach (4-0, 2.17) Height: 6-0 Weight: 195 Throws: Right Bats: Right Born: December 14, 1989 Opening Day Age: 25 Resides: Las Vegas, NV RH Donn Roach takes the hill for the seventh time this season in today s game. In his last outing, he shut out the Colorado Springs Sky Sox over 6.0 innings on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts in a win on Friday. Iowa is 4-2 in games started by Roach, and has won four straight in games he has started. Roach is also on a personal four-game winning streak. It is the first time in his career he has won four consecutive starts without a no-decision or a loss. DONN-ING HIS CAPE: Right-hander Donn Roach has been the hero of the I-Cubs starting rotation so far this season. Roach is fifth in the PCL with a 2.17 ERA through six starts. He is also fourth in the league in WHIP (1.07) and fourth in fewest baserunners per nine innings (9.88; 41BR/37.1IP). He also leads Iowa with 37.1 innings pitched, averaging just over 6.0 innings per start thus far. Roach has registered five consecutive quality starts for Iowa. His 8.0-inning performance on May 3 vs. OKC was the deepest any Cubs starter has gone in a game this season. KEEPING IT IN THE PARK: The right-hander has allowed just one home run this season, a two-run shot to Oklahoma City s Darnell Sweeney on May 3. He also only allowed four home runs in combined innings between San Diego and El Paso in He was first tagged by Rockies outfielder Chris Dickerson in his first and only career major league start on May 18, then again by Arizona s A.J. Pollack while pitching in relief on May 28. After being optioned to El Paso, he gave up a three-run home run to Chris Dominguez on July 20 in a loss at Fresno. Roach allowed seven homers in innings at Double-A San Antonio in Prior to that, he gave up just three home runs in innings from 2011 to 2012 between Single-A Cedar Rapids, Advanced-A Inland Empire and Advanced-A Lake Elsinore. In total, Roach has given up just 21 home runs in his six-year professional career between the minors and the big leagues. FRIAR ROACH: The Las Vegas resident came to the Cubs after signing a minor league deal in the off-season. He split the 2014 campaign between the San Diego Padres and Triple-A El Paso. He made one start for the Friars, May 18 at Colorado. He lasted 3.0 innings and allowed four earned runs on four hits and two walks. Roach also started 13 games for the Chihuahuas, going 4-6 with a 5.43 ERA (43ER/71.1IP) with 40 strikeouts and 36 walks. El Paso went 5-8 in games started by Roach in He achieved four quality starts at Triple-A. HIT THE JUMP: Roach made the Padres opening day roster in 2014, with his major league debut coming the next day in Los Angeles against the Dodgers. Roach made the team despite never throwing a pitch at the Triple-A level. In 2013, he spent the entire season in the Double-A San Antonio Missions starting rotation, going 8-12 with a 3.53 ERA (56ER/142.2IP) with 77 strikeouts and 40 walks. He made an impression on the Padres coaching staff in 2014 Spring Training, spinning a 3.00 ERA (5ER/15.0IP) with nine strikeouts in eight appearences out of the bullpen. SHORT STINTS: Roach appeared out of the bullpen for all but one of his appearances with San Diego in His ERA coming out of the Friars pen was 3.95 (12ER/27.1IP) in 15 appearances. Roach went more than an inning in 11 of those outings, including 4.1 one-hit innings on April 29 at San Francisco. After making 13 starts for Triple-A El Paso, Roach finished the season with six outings from the Chihuahuas pen as well, going 0-0 with a 3.00 ERA (2ER/6.0IP) and four strikeouts. THE GUY FOR FRIERI: Roach was acquired by the Padres from the Los Angeles Angels along with IF/OF Alexi Amarista in exchange for P Ernesto Frieri May 3, Frieri went on to secure the closer s job with the Angels by June of that season. ANGEL IN THE DESERT: The Angels drafted Roach in the 40th round of the 2008 June Draft out of Bishop Gorman High School in Summerlin, NV. He chose to forego signing to attend the University of Arizona. He transferred after his freshman year to the College of Southern Nevada where he played his sophomore season alongside Bryce Harper and helped guide the school to the Junior College World Series by going 12-3 with a 2.67 ERA (33ER/111.1IP) in 18 games, including 17 starts. He was then drafted by the Angels again, this time in the third round of the 2010 June Draft. vs. NASHVILLE: Today s start will be Roach s first career start against the Sounds.
