4 EFFECTS OF STRATEGIC LEADERSHP ON ORGANIZATIONAL GROWTH IN A TURBULENT ECONOMY: ANALYSIS OF MINORTITY-OWNED ORGANIZATIONS IN THE UNITED STATES ABSTRACT Solomon Fakinlede, Ph.D. Organizational growth depends on both macro and micro economic situations to thrive but the type of leadership the organization could also hamper its growth. This study examined leadership skills needed to excel in minority-owned organizations, most especially those of Nigerian-American organizations and also reviewed qualities brought into these organizations by transcultural practices. The researcher reviewed theories that support inspirational and motivational leadership, and examined importance of leadership training, efficacy levels among leaders, and inclusion strategies of Nigerian-American organizations. Strategic leaders must have technical skills to perform specialized tasks in their business areas; possess upscale abilities to work well with other people, and retain conceptual skills to analyze and solve complex problems. For organizations to flourish, leaders must have in-depth knowledge of their individual personality dimensions and a good understanding of others. In a turbulent economy, it is important for Nigerian-American business leaders to focus on organization as an open system and what the system requires to sustain its competition. The researcher concluded that leaders must emphasize training and development of strategic master plans to expedite organizational growth. In addition, this author recommended that leaders must be change agents and have extraordinary internal self-forces capable of driving their determination to succeed. KEYWORDS: Leadership, Diversity. 6 DEVELOPMENT OF MENTOR LEADERS FOR COMMUNITY BUILDING: A CASE STUDY OF WOMEN RELIGIOUS IN AFRICA Gina Zaffino, Ph.D Diane Keller, Ph.D., LSW ABSTRACT Mentoring is an effective method of transmitting knowledge and skills from one individual to another and has been identified as a useful technique in enhancing an individual's response to his/her community (Roland, 2008). Unlike a coach, who must have the ability to ask open questions and avoid closed ones, mentoring is solution based (Adams, 2010). In order to be effective as a mentor, one must develop specific skills. This qualitative case study examines and describes the process of developing as a mentor as experienced by women religious working in Africa. The context for this study was the mentoring component of a leadership program conducted in Ghana, Africa. Such a study is important because it contributes to the breadth of literature on leadership programs and how a mentoring component can enhance these types of training programs, especially in underdeveloped countries. The results of this case study were supported by the theoretical perspectives of transformational leadership and self-efficacy. The sample consisted of 18 women religious who were participating in a leadership program that was taking place in Ghana, Africa. Through methods of interviews, questionnaires, focus groups, and observations, the researcher analyzed the process of becoming a mentor. This research produced four developmental aspects that emerged related to the development of a mentor: (a) understanding of the role of a mentor, (b) developing confidence in mentoring, (c) handling and responding to obstacles/challenges, and (d) reflecting on the impact of mentoring. The results of this study indicated that a transformational process took place among the participants on their journey to becoming mentors. KEYWORDS: Mentoring, Leadership, women religious. 8 EFFECTS OF FOREIGN CAPITAL ON DOMESTIC CAPITAL FORMATION AND ECOMOMIC GROWTH IN NIGERIA Benjamin Ayodele Folorunso, Ph.D. ABSTRACT The paper examined whether foreign capital inflow crowds-in or crowds-out domestic capital and also determined the effect foreign capital portends on the long-run growth in Nigeria. Time series data were used from 1970 to 2011 and gathered mainly from the Statistical Bulletins published by the Central Bank of Nigeria. The paper adopted error correction mechanism techniques by testing for the properties of time series and possible existence of cointegration among the series. The paper found that foreign capital, domestic capital, nominal and real output growth, trade and financial openness, financial sector development and lending rate series were first difference stationary while inflation rate and exchange rate were stationary at levels at 5 per cent critical level of significance. Also, foreign capital has long-run relationship with domestic capital and economic growth series in Nigeria. The paper, however, confirmed that foreign capital crowds-in domestic investment while it portends significant positive effect on real economic growth in the country. The paper concluded that foreign capital is strongly required to complement domestic capital formation and promote rapid growth of the Nigerian economy in both the short and long run. Keywords: Foreign capital inflows; domestic capital formation; economic growth; time series analysis; macroeconomics. AUTHOR S PROFILE: Dr. Benjamin Ayodele Folorunso hold Ph.D. in Economics. He is an Associate Professor at the Department of Economics, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. He specializes in the area of Economic Theory, Monetary, Development and Mathematical Economics and Econometric Methods. He is a life member of the Nigerian Economic Society (NES) and CODESRIA. 9 A REVIEW OF SOLAR POWERED ACTIVATED CARBON METHANOL PAIR ADSORPTION REFRIGERATION SYSTEMS ABSTRACT Oloketuyi, Samson.I. Oyewola, O.M., Ph.D. Odesola, I.F., Ph.D. Solid adsorption refrigeration systems are attracting much research efforts because of their numerious advantages such as utilisation of free energy from the sun, low energy sources, low maintenace cost and environment friendly. Effective adsorption refrigeration systems will enhance agricultural produce preservation in remote locations where convectional vapour compression systems cannot be used. This paper reviewed past developments in adsorption refrigeration systems and discussed probable solutions to challenges facing the systems despite their numerious advantages over vapour compression systems. Proposed concept of hypothetical hybrid solar collector for adsorption refrigeration system was presented to handle heat and mass transfer problems perculiar to adsorption refrigeration systems. Keywords: Adsorption, energy, refrigeration, heat transfer, mass transfer. 11 COLLABORATIVE LEADERSHIP AND PRODUCTIVITY IN RELIGIOUS INSTITUTIONS By Dr. (Pastor) Femi Ajila, FNIM ABSTRACT This paper focuses on leadership as a process of influencing people so they will strive willingly and enthusiastically toward the achievement of group goals. Collaborative leaders, like transformational leaders inspire followers to transcend their own self-interests for the good of the organization and are capable of having profound and extra-ordinary effects on their followers. The essence of this is to ensure improved leadership performances. The study s focus is on efficiency in faith-based institutions and the author ascerts that a productive Pastor must yield the totality of his life to Jesus Christ. This paper also examines the concept of productivity in general, vis-à-vis the various steps required to become a fruitful pastor. It also analyzes leadership styles and concludes that productivity is enhanced when leaders, particularly in religious institutions, take steps to motivate, empower, and inspire followers to put up extra efforts in order to achieve group goals. KEY WORDS: Leadership; Collaborative leadership, Productivity. AUTHOR S PROFILE: Dr. Femi Ajila is a pastor and Senior Regional Overseers (United States) at Mountain of Fire & Miracle Ministries. 12 LEADERSHIP STYLES AND THEIR IMPLICANTIONS FOR PROSPEROUS INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS IN NIGERIA GENTLY, Kabiru Ishola (Ph.D. candidate) ABSTRACT Industrial relations as a profession or discipline of study have undergone a series of developmental stages. This is as a result of changing in world of work prompted by globalisation and its accomplice like technical innovation, knowledge economy to mention few. Thus, trade unions today face simultaneously a wide range of often contradictory tasks. Therefore, they need to change and are changing in order to meet both new and persistent challenges to their advancement of social justice, income security and industrial democracy. The study examines how trade union leaders are going to survive in this turbulent economy paradigm using effective leadership styles that promote prosperous industrial relations in Nigeria. The study adopted discourse content analysis using secondary information of existing literatures on the subject matter to draw up a concrete conclusion with the aid of pictorial discussion. The study concluded that all the styles of leadership can enhance prosperous industrial relations but recommended the need for a situational approach to leadership. That is, the best style of leadership will depend upon the situation. Again, it is important to note that genuine leadership can only turn things around with the cooperation of followership. Therefore, a successful leader is the one which employs all forms of leadership styles in a given situation with predominate cooperation from its followership. Keywords: Leadership styles, Transactional, Transformational, Industrial Relations,Autocratic, Democratic and Laissez-faire. AMERICAN JOURNAL OF STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP, Volume 1, Number 1,
