3 An Important Business Career Landmark The Doctor of Business Leadership (DBL) is designed to prepare senior executives to more effectively assume overall leadership responsibility within a substantial multi-business unit organisation operating in intensely competitive national and global markets. The DBL involves a learning journey that has been identified by corporate leaders, their boards and past DBL participants as vital preparation to deal with increasingly complex and dynamic contexts. Many corporate leaders have gained their formal organisational positions as a consequence of their performance and meritorious achievements, complemented by general management education in courses such as the MBA, but frequently have not had opportunities to undertake higher education CEO level leadership courses suited to senior corporate executives where the outcomes of Master level courses in management have been surpassed. The DBL equips candidates to accelerate their leadership development by assisting them to make explicit their implicit personal contingent leadership paradigm, drawing on their personal leadership journey. The DBL provides personal challenges and capability enhancement opportunities for experienced executives who have demonstrated the ability to contribute to the success of their enterprises over at least a ten-year period and who have completed a Master Degree in a relevant business or leadership discipline. The DBL reflects the proposition when theory is deduced through practice research, it is more likely to successfully guide future practice. In essence, good theory is good practice. Course Outcomes Upon completion, candidates will have: A comprehensive understanding of leadership theory and its implications for leadership practice; Greater personal confidence and an ability to innovate and lead adaptation to increasingly complex and uncertain multi-stakeholder contexts; Sensitivity to cultural, social, demographic and economic change and diversity reflected in their decision-making and communication; The ability to critically analyse from a holistic perspective leadership issues likely to emerge and impact the future performance of their organisations; An appreciation of the role corporate leadership has in securing socially responsible outcomes; and Demonstrated and justified an original and significant contribution to the practice of leadership. 3

4 Course Duration (a) The minimum time for completion will normally be two years of equivalent full-time study. (b) The maximum time for completion of the DBL (not including periods of approved suspension of enrolment) will normally be three calendar years for a full-time candidate. (c) Candidates enrolled part-time are subject to timeframes twice as long as mentioned in the points above. (d) A candidate who successfully completes the required double subjects with credit or higher grades but does not have the Research Proposal accepted may exit with an appropriate Graduate Diploma. Admission Criteria Applicants to the doctoral program are expected to satisfy the following academic criteria: Possession of a Master s degree by thesis or dissertation appropriate to the professional field of the applicant; or Possession of a Master s degree by coursework appropriate to the professional field of the applicant completed at a superior standard; or Possession of a Bachelor's degree with Honours (typically 1st Class or Class 2A Honours level or equivalent); or In exceptional circumstances, an equivalent academic background that is considered by the Dean of the School to be an appropriate preparation for independent study and research work at doctoral level. An applicant may be required to satisfy the Dean of the School of the ability to understand and communicate in both written and spoken English at a level adequate for the purpose of pursuing doctoral level research. To proceed to stage 2 the candidate will need to present a Critique proposal that satisfies their Review Panel. In addition to the academic criteria listed above, applicants are normally expected to have a minimum of 10 years of relevant professional leadership practice experience to be admitted to the course. Course Delivery The course is delivered using blended distance learning methodologies and Laureate Student Support Services. 4

5 DBL Course - Stage 1 Historically, successful leaders have forged an effective personal leadership style grounded in an understanding of their personal strengths, weaknesses and values that evolve progressively and implicitly throughout their leadership practice experiences. The DBL equips candidates to accelerate their leadership development by assisting them to develop progressively a personal contingent leadership paradigm. To embark on this personal development journey, relevant knowledge, research skills and basic leadership insights derived from personal experiences need to be acquired, which is the function of stage 1, which involves successfully completing the coursework double subjects: DBAL701: Business Leadership - Theory and Practice DBAL702: Business Leadership - Case Analyses DBAL703: Critical Reasoning and Ethics for Business Leaders DBAL704: Business Leadership Issues. Candidates may proceed to stage 2 if they successfully present to a Review Panel a potentially feasible proposal for delivering significant and innovative insights regarding how the practice of leadership can be advanced in their specified context, based on their work during stage 1. Candidates who do not proceed to stage 2 and who have successfully completed the four double subjects will be awarded a Graduate Diploma of Business Leadership. DBL Course - Stage 2 (DBL 710) To gain the Doctoral qualification involves successful completion of a supervised and externally examined Leadership Critique and Supporting Portfolio. To satisfy this examination, the candidate must evolve and critique (and, if necessary, re-think) the personal contingent leadership paradigm developed during Stage 1 through an analysis of the candidate s personal leadership experiences. Guidance is provided in developing this analysis and regarding the type of evidence that may be included in the supporting portfolio. External examiners determine whether the candidate has made a significant and original contribution to leadership practice. Workload Each stage 1 double subject will involve approximately 20 hours of work per week. The total work required to complete stage 2 is approximately twice the total workload of stage 1. Our experience is that CEOs and senior executives are able to cope with one double subject per trimester in addition to their full time employment. 5

7 Development of a Personal Contingent Leadership Paradigm In DBL701 Business Leadership - Theory and Practice, candidates start the process of reflecting on and articulating a personal contingent leadership paradigm to guide how they might enhance the effectiveness of their approach to leadership. A personal contingent leadership paradigm is a justified set of theoretical propositions and personal values that logically underpin a set of practice guidelines that shape how a leader perceives and responds to leadership challenges. DBL702 Business Leadership - Case Analyses provides guidance regarding the methodological research approaches available to extract insights from case study research based on the candidate's personal leadership experiences. DBL703 Critical Reasoning and Ethics for Business Leaders addresses ethical considerations that permeate all DBL subjects. For example, equitably sharing overall value gains is the most important contributor to building stakeholder trust, without which sustainable collaborative endeavour is difficult to achieve. DBL703 also addresses the fundamentals of logical critical analysis. DBL704 Business Leadership Issues involves identifying emerging leadership issues within a holistic strategic arena framework that embodies the candidate s context. Once this framework has been established, future scenarios are developed to gain insights as to how the proposed personal contingent leadership paradigm might cope or might need amending under different assumptions. As the candidate progresses through stage 1, areas of their work requiring further investigation are uncovered. The candidate presents the action proposed to address these concerns and develop their personal contingent leadership paradigm in stage 2 to the Review Panel established to assess the likelihood of the candidate satisfying stage 2 requirements. Those who achieve the designation Doctor on being awarded a Doctor of Business Leadership Degree will have demonstrated a commitment to adaptive leadership. Adaptive leadership recognises the implications of new connections and emerging patterns and understands their business models, strategic and organisational cultural implications, while remaining focussed on an overall purpose. In essence, the course is designed to develop leadership that never stops learning and is increasingly effective over time. 7

8 Enrolment and Fees To apply for enrolment, please complete and submit the online Application for Admission form available at: Part time enrolment (one double subject per trimester) fees for trimester 1 commencing on 22 February 2016 are $7840. Enrolments close Friday 12 February Enrolment fees are payable for each trimester enrolled in a double subject and each trimester enrolled in DBL710: Leadership Critique and Supporting Portfolio until the Leadership Critique and Supporting Portfolio is completed and submitted, except for any approved leave of absence.
