1 College Senate Meeting Minutes April 24, 2012 Senators present: S. Babcock (proxy held and voted by K. Hibbard), J. Backus-Foster, A. Burger, J. Burgess, S. Carlson, M. DeFreece, D. Dougherty, L. Nader Meeting called to order at 4:15 pm President s Report Thank you to everyone during this busy spring semester o Launch of the Student Success Work Group o Gala meeting sold out event; 340 tickets o Distribution of the Student Opinion Survey o Opening of Baker Street Baby Cakes o Chronicle survey o Middle States review visitation members enjoyed the campus and the familial attitude; failed two standards--#5 & #14 shared services is the cause; will need to complete a 1 or 2 year report update Enrollment is of concern; we are expecting to meet our 2% increase over last year but there is concern that some programs may not meet their targets lower enrollment trickles through the campus The Gala Celebration May 10 th ; expecting to raise more than expected Questions o Q: When will the written report from Middle States be available? A: 2-3 weeks and the President will be able to correct any factual errors o Q: How will the college respond to standard #5? A: The issue is about shared services and that a college president cannot serve more than 51% of their time at more than one college; this is an issue for SUNY to deal with o Q: Are there any other colleges dealing with shared services resulting in failing standard #5? A: Any college using shared services similar to ours will fail standard # 5. Provost Nader o The Student Opinion Survey began today; Thank you to the culinary classes for the cookies
2 Curriculum Committee o Completed the SUNY Report Card; number of internships and cooperatives was 497 in the school year o Student debt for the current student population is $14.6 million o Enrollment Hospitality is struggling onsite and offsite; more pronounced off campus o SSWG is underway and is currently working on a variety of options to support student success o Standard #14 foundation is in place concern on unevenness as not all areas are covered o Finals Week please ask your area if they have an opinion of going to 15 weeks of instruction with an option for a 2 hour block to replace the last week o Q: How do we ensure growth in practice to respond to Standard #14? A: look to annual reports; make sure everyone has outcomes o Q: Will there be workshops on Standard #14? A: Yes o Q: For Standard #5, are we looking to adjusting the structure from deans on down? A: Yes, but carefully through release time and greater use of adjuncts Motion: J. Yando; Seconded: A. Thompson; approved CC11-40 April 3 CC11-41 April 3 & & The proposal to reduce the credits on VETS 120 Introduction to Veterinary from 3 to 2 credits was approved. The proposal to reduce the credits on VETS 160 Introduction to Animal Techniques from 4 to 3 credits was approved. CC11-42 April 3 & The proposal to increase the credits on VETS 131 Small Animal Care from 1 to 3 credits and change the name to Small Animal Care and Nursing was approved. All changes will not increase the overall credits of the program. Seconded: K. MacLeod; approved CC11-43 April 3 The proposal to reduce the credits on MATH 115 Statistics from 4 to 3 credits was approved. Seconded: K. Ogborn; approved CC11-44 April 3 The proposal to add a new course BIOL 240 Genetics was approved with changing the banner grid from upper to lower division. Tabled CC11-45 April 3 Proposal to change the science requirements in the AS degree eliminating CITA 110, eliminating one HUMN/ARTS elective, eliminating the science elective and unrestricted electives, and requiring all
3 three sequences in science (TABLED). Motion: L. Goodwin- Burwood; Seconded: A. Mitchell; approved CC11-46 April 3 The proposal to move BIOL 145 General Ecology to a two hundred level was approved, it will BIOL 245 General Ecology. Seconded: S. Swayze; approved CC11-47 April 3 The proposal to add a new course CJUS 345 New York State Criminal Code was approved for on campus and online format. CC11-48 April 3 The proposal to add a new course CJUS 348 Constitutional Law was approved for on campus and online format. CC11-49 April 3 The proposal to add a new course CJUS 355 Forensics was approved for on campus and online format. CC11-50 April 3 The proposal to add a new course CJUS 360 Cyber Security, Information, and Law Enforcement was approved for on campus and online format. CC11-51 April 3 The proposal to add a new course CJUS 365 Applications of in Criminal Justice was approved for on campus and online format CC11-52 April 3 The proposal to add a new course CJUS 370 Substance Abuse and Criminal Justice System was approved for on campus and online format CC11-53 April 3 The proposal to add a new course CJUS 375 Victimology was approved for on campus and online format CC11-54 April 3 The proposal to add a new course CJUS 380 Internship in Criminal Justice was approved for on campus and online format with adding in the carnegie units 3-6:0,40. CC11-55 April 3 The proposal to add a new course CJUS 410 Contemporary Issues in Criminal Justice was approved for on campus and online format with a change in the prerequisites to include CJUS 310 Research Methods in Criminal Justice and remove research methods course. CC11-56 April 3 The proposal to add a new course CJUS 420 Current
4 Issues in Criminology was approved for on campus and online format with a change in the prerequisites to include CJUS 310 Research Methods in Criminal Justice and remove research methods course. CC11-57 April 3 Proposal to add a new course CJUS 430 Capstone Course in Criminal Justice was approved for on campus and online format with a change in the prerequisites to include CJUS 310 Research Methods in Criminal Justice and remove research methods course and add MATH 115 Statistics and remove the word statistics. Approve minutes from Motion to approve with correction to bullet 2C under Centennial Committee from who to how: J Burgess; seconded: S. Swayze; approved Resolution on Shared Services Discussion to change the first resolved to a whereas and add another resolved by combining last with additional information Discussion to leave it as is M. McKenna: shared services are not going away; shared services are not the same as shared Presidency Motion to pass the resolution as written; motion: L. Goodwin-Burwood; seconded: A. Mitchell; abstention: M. McKenna & S. Babcock; approved. Term Limits for Committee Chairs Term limits can be set to provide checks and balances to committees and to help better distributed the work loads o Discussion on not changing if things seem to be going fine as is o Two year terms are they fair? o Do we want to model the structure of Budget & Planning? Use co-chairs? Train leaders? o Provides steps to leadership o Succession plan for committees o Survey the committees? What would work for them? o Motion to change the bylaws to create term limits for chairs: L. Goodwin-Burwood; seconded: T. Hamblin; approved o Motion on length of term limits to 2 terms with unlimited service on the committed as voted: T. Hamblin; seconded: J. Yando; approved Old Business Elections
