If there are no new courses enter None ) MEDT 240 Crime Scene Investigation, provides students the opportunity to learn about processing physical evidence at crime scenes MEDT 455 Forensic Science Practicum, provides students with real world hands-on experience Supply support letter from the Library, Dean, and/or Department Chair if needed (all new majors/minors will need a support letter from the appropriate administrator.) Support letter from department chair is provided. Supply a resolution for all new majors/programs; name changes of colleges, departments, degrees; transfer of departments from one college to another; creation of new departments; requests for permanent status. FORENSIC SCIENCE MINOR RESOLUTION WHEREAS, the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences has been successfully offering an introductory forensic science course, and WHEREAS, an increasing number of students have an interest in forensic science, and WHEREAS, there is a need for individuals prepared for entry level positions in the field of forensic science; be it therefore RESOLVED, that the Faculty Senate recommends the approval of the establishment of a new forensic science minor Explain, when appropriate, how this new/revised curriculum supports the 10 goals of undergraduate education: This minor will meet Goal 2, Learn to think critically to solve problems. In several of the courses students will be presented with case studies and real life scenarios to develop solutions. Goal 3, Be able to work and learn both independently and collaboratively, will also be met by working independently and on group projects. Goal 6 will be met by challenging the students to learn the content material and search for answers outside the textbook and hopefully encouraging them to continue the search for knowledge. This minor will provide practical and applied knowledge for those interested in forensic science, thus meeting Goal 7. Identify other units affected by the proposed changes: (Attach permission from the affected units. If no other unit is affected, enter None ) Courses in the departments of Anthropology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Criminal Justice, and Kinesiology and Applied Physiology are part of the curriculum. 3 Describe the rationale for the proposed program change(s): (Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.) The Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences has been successfully offering an introductory forensic science course, and an increasing number of students have an interest in forensic science. Currently, there is a need for individuals prepared for entry level positions in the field of forensic science. This minor will offer the opportunity to students to obtain an entry level position in forensic science and provide students with an overview of this field of study. 4 Degree: Forensic Science Minor The interdisciplinary forensic science minor is designed to prepare students earning a Bachelor of Science degree in a life science or basic science for an entry level position in the field of forensic science. In addition, this minor will appeal to students wanting a fundamental knowledge of forensic science who do not want a position as a forensic scientist. The minor provides students with an understanding of the judicial system, procedures for proper collection, and preservation of physical evidence, laboratory skills, and knowledge about the methods of analysis of physical evidence.
