1 18 December 2013 UEF DOCTORAL PROGRAMMES 2013 High quality, transparent and foreseeable doctoral education INSTRUCTIONS ON THE TRANSFER OF POSGRADAUTE STUDENTS TO UEF DOCTORAL PROGRAMMES These instructions apply to UEF postgraduate students who by 31 December 2012 have been granted a right to study for a scientific postgraduate degree. As from 1 January 2013, all scientific postgraduate education at the University of Eastern Finland will be organised within doctoral programmes. The university has established 28 doctoral programmes which cover all the disciplines of the university (Appendix 1). The mission of the doctoral programmes is to offer postgraduate education and supervision in their field in a high quality and systematic manner. The university s doctoral programmes may also operate as part of a national or international doctoral programme network. All students completing a scientific postgraduate degree are required to be members of a doctoral programme offered by the university. This reorganisation of postgraduate education only applies to scientific postgraduate education leading to licentiate and doctoral degrees. Professional postgraduate education leading to professional licentiate degrees continues to be organised as before. Transfer of current postgraduate students to the doctoral programmes All UEF postgraduate students who by 31 December 2012 have been granted a right to study for a scientific postgraduate degree will become students of the doctoral programmes. Students will transfer to the doctoral programmes via a registration procedure as from 2 January 2013 as follows: The student and the student s supervisor decide which of the doctoral programmes is suitable for the student. The student registers for the new doctoral programme and this information is entered in the student s study register Oodi. In order to do this, the student needs to notify Student and Learning Services of his or her new doctoral programme either in person or by sending an to: opiskelu@uef.fi. The should include the student s name, student number / social security number, and the name of the doctoral programme. Students should register for their doctoral programme no later than at the time of making their next semester registration (by 15 September 2014). NB! It is not possible to register for the doctoral programmes via WebOodi. After the student has registered for the doctoral programme, the student decides whether he or she continues to complete the degree in accordance with the old requirements or whether he or she starts to follow the degree requirements of the new doctoral programme. Students are recommended to start following the degree requirements of the new programmes. In this case, the student needs to make a new personal postgraduate study plan which observes the degree requirements of the new programme, and this study plan 1

2 is to be delivered to the Administration Service Centre of the faculty concerned. The degree requirements of the doctoral programmes have been published in the university s Doctoral Curricula. Postgraduate students who have been granted a study right prior to 31 December 2012 have the possibility to complete their degree in accordance with the old degree requirements up until 31 December After this, it will only be possible to complete postgraduate degrees in accordance with the degree requirements of the doctoral programmes, which means that the student needs to update his or her personal study plan. Postgraduate students will not lose their study right and they do not need to re-apply for their study right as a result of this doctoral programme reform. Degree requirements of the doctoral programmes The degree requirements of the doctoral programmes apply to scientific licentiate and doctoral degrees. The degree requirements vary from one programme, faculty and degree to another (Appendix 2). The degree requirements have been published in the university s Doctoral Curricula. The requirements set for the doctoral degrees have been revised so as to make it possible for students to complete the doctoral degree in four years of full-time study. In accordance with the Government Decree on University Degrees (794/2004), to be awarded a doctorate, the student must: 1) complete the required postgraduate studies; 2) demonstrate independent and critical thinking in the field of research; and 3) write a doctoral dissertation and defend it in public. The extent of the required postgraduate studies at the University of Eastern Finland varies from 30 to 50 credits, depending on the doctoral programme and the degree. To be awarded a licentiate degree, the student must complete the required postgraduate studies and write a licentiate thesis. Each of the faculties has defined its own requirements for the doctoral dissertation. The requirements are explained in the Doctoral Curricula. The activities of the doctoral programmes seek to improve the perceived quality, foreseeability and transparency of doctoral education.
