4 Bradley University Senate Minutes Second Regular Meeting of the Senate 3:10 P.M. October 16, 2008 Michel Student Center Marty Theater I. Call to order The meeting was called to order at 3:17 p.m. II. Announcements There were no announcements. III. Approval of Minutes First Regular Meeting September 18, 2008 (p. 4) A motion was made to approve the minutes for the meeting on 18 September The motion was seconded by Claire Etaugh. The motion passed. IV. Call for New Items to the Agenda Molly Cluskey asked if there were any items that needed to be added to the agenda for this month s meeting. No new items were mentioned. V. Reports from Administrators A. President Glasser: President Glasser said that she would talk briefly about financial issues. She said that she has asked Gary Anna to provided a more detailed update of the University s financial situation in the wake of the global economic situation at November meeting of the university senate. The President discussed the enrollment situation, based on the third week reports. The third week reports are still below expectations, with 1,032 new first-year students, and 287 transfer students. As concerns issues that pertain to the recent market downturn, President Glasser mentioned that she is holding regular and serious cabinet meetings to monitor developments. She stated that the university will look for selective and prudent ways to start prioritizing what we, institutionally, can afford in the coming year. She reiterated that this was not a forecast for gloom and doom, but merely that we will most likely have to tighten our belts a bit. It is possible that there are some things we may not be able to afford next year and that must be put on hold. She reiterated that fundraising efforts are still going full-steam ahead and that she is encouraged that we will meet $150 million goal. She mentioned that she is committed to maintaining salaries and benefits given that people come first and that to the extent that we can do maintain these, we ll continue to do it. Gary Anna will have a more thorough report on the university s financial situation in November; he will be reporting to the trustees about this issue next week. On a brighter note, the Markin Center will open officially Thursday October 23 rd. David Markin will be here. Finally, tonight, the annual emeriti dinner will take place. There were no questions afterwards.
5 B. Provost Robert Bolla: Dr. Bolla announced that he would not make comments today. VI. Report from Standing Committees A.
