Global School of Theology South Africa Western Cape Global School of Theology South Africa is accredited and registered with the Department of Education as a private higher education institution under the Higher Education Act, 1997 (Registration Certificate No. 04HF01). Global School of Theology South Africa degrees are recognised both nationally and internationally through our relationship with Global University in the USA. Global School of Theology South Africa (formerly International Correspondence Institute / ICI) was started in South Africa in the 1970 s. Global School of Theology South Africa Western Cape (GST SA WC), formerly Cape College of Theology (CCT), and then Cape Theological Seminary (CTS) was started in Cape Town in The Western Cape campus has been a facilitated programme, with optional residence available. Previously correspondence students were served by the National Office in Roodepoort. In 2013 the Western Cape campus started offering correspondence learning to students living in the Western Cape Province. The facilitated programme is still offered for those wanting to learn in a classroom setting. For more information on the facilitated programme, contact BAinfo@cts.org.za. The undergraduate programme offers a Diploma in Religious Studies, and BA Degrees majoring in Bible and Theology, or Intercultural Studies. The Western Cape campus also offers Post Graduate Studies in block sessions twice per year. The Master of Arts offers three concentrations, namely, Leadership, Biblical Studies, and Education. For more information on the MA programme, contact MAinfo@cts.org.za, or visit All degrees earned through study at GST SA Western Cape are GST SA degrees. Credit Hours and Credits A conversion formula is used to relate GST SA credits to the credits recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). This formula is: 1 GST SA credit hour = 3.75 SAQA credits. Academic Programmes The programmes of the Undergraduate Studies are designed for ministers, ministerial students, and laypersons that are serious in their desire for a biblical education. Global School of Theology SA WC offer a Diploma, and BA degree programmes. Diploma Programme GST SA WC offers a Diploma in Religious Studies. The diploma is ideal for individuals who seek training but are not planning to continue towards a BA degree. The Diploma is a 240 (RSA) credit programme. Bachelor of Arts Degree The Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree Programme is a 360 (RSA) credit course. GST SA Western Cape offers two majors in the Bachelor of Arts Programme: Bible and Theology, and Intercultural Studies. The BA with Bible and Theology major is designed to provide the educational background needed by those preparing for a pastoral or preaching ministry. It also provides a solid foundation for life and ministry in general. 2

The BA with the Intercultural Studies major is designed for those who plan to serve as missionaries. It has a basic Bible and Theology component with emphasis in cross-cultural communications and Christian missions. Bridging Requirements Students with a National Senior Certificate but not with appropriate subject combinations and levels of achievement (Senior Certificate with exemption) are only able to enter the BA Programme after successfully completing the bridging requirements. If they are able to achieve a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0 for the bridging courses, they will qualify to enter the Bachelor of Arts Degree Programme. This Bridging requirement and BA is a 480 (RSA) credit programme. Second Bachelor of Arts Programme Individuals who have already earned a bachelor's degree are eligible for advanced placement in the GST SA BA programme. With this kind of advanced placement it is possible to complete a BA, majoring in Bible and Theology or Intercultural Studies, by completing an additional 188 (RSA) credits. Admission Requirements Applicants must have completed secondary school, obtaining an appropriate National Senior Certificate for the qualification enrolled. Equivalent qualifications may be based on transcripts from another tertiary institution, or official educational records from South Africa or another country. Only official transcripts will be considered. For those with previous undergraduate training, advanced academic placement through transfer of credit may be possible. GST SA reserves the right to determine whether it will accept transfer credits from another academic institution. Students should request from the institution where they studied, that their official transcript be sent directly from that institution to the GST SA National Office in Roodepoort. The Request for Academic Records form can be used to submit this request (available on request from the GST SA WC Admissions Office, or online at The maximum number of credits that can be accepted in transfer towards the BA degree is 240 (RSA). Transfer credit is granted only for courses for which the equivalent to GST SA s standard for a C (average) or better has been earned. All transfer credit must fit GST SA s academic programme requirements. Courses with a grade of pass must be certified by the school as being equivalent to GST SA s standard for a C or higher in order to be accepted in transfer. Transcripts and official documents must be in English or be accompanied by an official translation into English. Foreigners living in the Western Cape are only allowed to be accepted as students if their visa states that they may study while living in South Africa. If their visa does not include studying, they may apply as a student, and if given provisional acceptance, they may then apply for a study visa. Only after receiving their study visa, will they then be given full acceptance into a programme. Home Affairs will be notified if a student does not register at GST WC within six months of their approved provisional application. Application Procedure Application forms are available on request from the GST SA WC Admissions Office, or online at 3

These must be sent directly from the Higher Education Institution to the GST National Office in Roodepoort 5. A Certificate of Good Conduct if you are transferring from another Higher Education Institution 6. A certified, colour-copy of your South African ID or Passport and Visa 7. Your personal testimony of salvation (a minimum of 250 words, preferably typed) Complete applications can be handed in at the GST WC offices during office hours, on Monday to Thursday, 8:30-16:30, or Friday, 8:30-15:30. Alternately, applications can be posted to: BA Admissions Counsellor, PO Box 11066, Bloubergrant, If items are being posted, it is suggested that they be sent by Registered mail. The R200 Application Fee can be paid into the school bank account; see Financial Matters for the bank details. Please ensure that the applicant's name is given as a Reference on the Application fee payment. After the complete application has been submitted to the GST SA Western Cape Office, it will be sent to the National Office in Roodepoort. Acceptance into a programme is granted by the Global School of Theology South Africa National Office. When accepted into a programme, the National Office will allocate the new student a student number. If accepted, the Western Cape office will send the student an acceptance letter and guide the student in the steps that need to be taken in order to begin studying. Enrolment Procedure The first course (subject/module) that students enrol for is an orientation to GST SA curriculum and correspondence learning system. Students are allowed to enrol in more than one course if they wish; but may not take more than 3 courses at a time. Options of other courses will be provided when a student is accepted. These additional courses will need to be included in the Registration Request form submitted by the student. An invoice will then be sent to the student including the additional fees. All fees must be paid in full before a student will be given books. A Subject Enrolment Card (SEC) will be given together with the books for the new course. Students need to complete and sign the SEC, and return it to the Western Cape Office. Students will have the 3 months of the term in which to complete courses and write the final exams. All students enrolling in any GST SA Programme must complete the Bible and Theology Pre-test. If possible, these assessments need to be done before starting the first course. However, if this is not possible, an extension can be given, but then these assessments must be completed before a student requests the final exam for the Orientation course. Acceptance into a programme does not depend on scores on these assessments, and the results do not appear on transcripts. 4

Term Schedule The Distance Education schedule consists of 4 terms, each lasting 3 months. The terms start in the first full week of March, June, September, and December. Once an application has been approved, a student may register for courses and start in the next term. Courses will be completed in a term, allowing for registration in new courses in the following term. Each student works according to his or her own list of required courses, determined by the programme in which he or she has enrolled. During the 3 month term, a student can enrol in up to 3 courses. The number of courses a student enrols in should be determined by the amount of time that is available for studying. Student studying eight hours per week can usually complete one 3-credit course in 12 weeks. The amount of time it will take to complete a degree varies according to the number of courses studied each term. A student needs to complete approximately 24 courses to earn a Diploma. A student without a Senior Certificate exemption will need to complete approximately 47 courses to earn a BA Degree. A student with a Senior Certificate exemption needs to complete approximately 36 courses to earn a BA Degree. A student with a degree, wishing to complete a second degree, will need to complete approximately 20 courses to earn a second degree. If a student does not enrol in a course for more than 18 months, the student will become inactive. In order to continue studying after 18 months, a student will need to reactivate his or her student status. In order to do this, a student will need to submit a new application form and pay a reactivation fee. The student will then fall into the current year programme requirements being offered; this may mean that the student will need to complete new or additional courses required under the new programme in order to earn the qualification they are working towards. Financial Matters The Academic fee for each course is R1050. This does not include the price of the Study Guides and textbooks as these can vary. There is an annual surety fee of R There is an option of taking books out of the GST SA WC campus library at an annual fee of R The Form and Style Guide needed for course work can be sent to you via for free, or printed at a cost of R If students would like the course Study Guide and Textbooks posted to them, there will be an additional fee to cover the cost of postage. Students may also collect books from the GST SA WC campus Monday to Friday, during office hours. The academic and book fee must be paid in full before a student will receive books. If a student wishes to, he or she can deposit money on a monthly basis during a term, earning credit towards the next term fees. This provides an option for a payment plan prior to receiving books. Any money still owed in week 10 of the term must then be paid in order to receive books and be enrolled in a course for the following term. There is no credit card payment facility available at GST SA WC, so payments need to be made into the following bank account: Account Name: Cape Theological Seminary (Current Account) Account #: Bank: Standard Bank 5

Branch: Bayside Branch Code for EFT s within SA: Branch Code for International EFT's: Transfer/Deposit Reference: Initials and surname of the student International Payment Swift Code: SBZAZAJJ (All payments should be made in South African Rand s.) Students are to ensure that their names are provided as a reference on all payments. Course Work The GST SA course work is contained in Study Guides (SG s); each is designed for independent study. Textbooks are used for most courses, and are either directly related to the study plan of the course, or are given as a separate reading assignment (Collateral Reading Assignment). Each GST SA course requires a written project or research paper. Students also need to apply and present course principles as a practical application of what has been learnt, and submit a Service Learning Requirement report on the experience. Final Examination Final exams will be written in the last week of the Correspondence Learning term. All course work must be submitted via to the Correspondence Office, 3 weeks before exams, in order to qualify to write the exam. Exams may be written on the GST SA WC campus, or if a student can arrange someone (possibly his or her pastor) to supervise the exam, then at any venue that is agreed upon with the supervisor. Extra-curricular Requirements Students enrolled with GST SA Western Cape may be required to attend certain seminars or fulfil certain practical activities in addition to course requirements. These requirements are designed to further enhance the learning experience. Students will be informed of the specific details of these requirements. Graduation Requirements Undergraduate diplomas and degrees are issued by Global School of Theology SA only after a review of the student s records and certification that all the following requirements have been fulfilled: 1. All required courses have been successfully completed. (Any transcript being evaluated for possible transfer of credit from another school must be submitted no later than when completing the third GST SA course.) 2. A minimum of 120 SA credits have been earned through GST SA. 3. Cumulative grade point average is at least Capstone* requirement has been fulfilled. 5. The graduation fee has been paid. *The capstone requirement is designed to measure students progress at the end of the programme. While the capstone requirement is not a course and students will 6

not receive a grade, all components of the requirement must be submitted in order for students to graduate. The capstone consists of four activities: 1. A Bible and Theology Post-test, and if enrolled in the Bridging requirements, a General Education Post-test as well 2. A written essay 3. A verbal communication recording 4. The Graduate Follow-Up Survey Language of Instruction All Study Guides and textbooks are in English. All course work needs to be submitted in English. Ministerial Credential Global School of Theology SA does not credential ministers. Individuals studying to fulfil educational requirements for ministerial credentials should refer to the credentialing information of their Church Denomination or Fellowship. Students should contact their Church s district or regional office to determine the appropriate requirements and to ensure that the programme they wish to complete will assist them in qualifying to receive credentials. Library Resources GST SA WC students are given access to the Global University online library site. The Global University Library provides valuable online resources such as CREDO Reference, Encyclopedia Britannica Online Academic Edition, Academic Search Elite, and American Theological Association (ATLA) databases. These resources provide students with access to thousands of peer-review journals, as well as general reference resources. This site is accessible through the Global University s website at The GST SA Western Cape campus has a library which is available for all students to use in fulfilling their course work requirements. Students wishing to use the library can contact the WC Campus regarding the library hours. The Library Staff will provide students will a Library Handbook, outlining the guidelines for using the library. An annual membership fee allows students to check books out of the library; or students may work in the library for free but not check out books. Academic Programme Requirements The following pages list the courses required for each programme offered.
