BIO-MONITORING AND AUTOMATIC MICROBIOLOGICAL CONTAMINATION CONTROL SYSTEM OF INDUSTRIAL HYDRAULIC CIRCUITS ITMA FAIR - 12 November 2015, Hotel NH Milano Fiera - Viale degli Alberghi,

INDEX: MAIN ACTIONS DURING THE INDUSTRIAL AND VALIDATION PHASE INDUSTRIAL AND VALIDATION PHASE IN COOLING TOWER RESULTS IN COOLING TOWER MAIN CONCLUSIONS IN COOLING TOWER INDUSTRIAL AND VALIDATION PHASE IN CONDITIONING SYSTEM RESULTS IN CONDITIONING SYSTEM MAIN CONCLUSIONS IN CONDITIONIG SYSTEM

MAIN ACTIONS DURING THE INDUSTRIAL AND VALIDATION PHASE Real time monitoring and quantifying of aerobic microorganisms present in the water of COOLING TOWER Optimum dosage of biocides to minimize the microorganism concentration in COOLING TOWER Real time monitoring and quantifying of aerobic microorganisms present in the water of CONDITIONING SYSTEM Optimum dosage of chlorine to minimize the microorganism concentration in CONDITIONING SYSTEM.

INDUSTRIAL AND VALIDATION PHASE IN COOLING TOWER Supplying water analysis Pool water of the cooling towers analysis Analysis point Clean water Hypochlorite

INDUSTRIAL AND VALIDATION PHASE IN COOLING TOWER The implementation, validation and the monitoring and dosing automatic control of the installation as well as the analysis of the samples have been carried out in P&B from July 2014 to December During these months, the following activities had been performed: Cooling towers have been functioning during 5 days a week The prototype was controlling the pool during 5 days a week, monitoring the content of free chlorine, ph and aerobic bacterium at 37ºC In manual way was performed following analysis: Preparing the nutrient solution to analysis the bacterium at 37ºC Supplying water (aerobic microorganism at 22ºC daily) Pool water of the cooling towers (ph, free chlorine, conductivity, aerobic microorganism at 22 and 37ºC, three times a day, Legionella pneumophila, once a month)

RESULTS IN COOLING TOWER

RESULTS IN COOLING TOWER

RESULTS IN COOLING TOWER Hystorical results of P&B: ph: 7,10 7,90 Free Cl (ppm): 1,6 2,5 Temperature (ºC): Weekly control in P&B facility

MAIN CONCLUSIONS OF THE PROTOTYPE IN COOLING TOWER: The prototype allows to control and monitoring the amount of free chlorine between two values with high accuracy (0,8-1,2 ppm). These quantities imply a reduction between 50-66% of biocide consumption vs conventional mode: /año vs The prototype allows to control and monitoring the bacterium growing, always bellow ufc although the big inlet water contamination ( ). Historically the concentration of bacterias in the pool is always nearly to ufc. Depending on the bacterium concentration the prototype analyses 1 or two samples per day, when the bacterium concentration is bellow the prototype needs nearly 24 hours to give the result.

INDUSTRIAL AND VALIDATION PHASE IN CONDITIONING SYSTEM FAN SPRAYER PANEL DROPLET SEPARATOR INLET WATER & CHEMICAL DOSAGE The prototype was located outside the facilities next to the wall which communicates with the pool room.

INDUSTRIAL AND VALIDATION PHASE IN CONDITIONING SYSTEM Analysis point 2 Hypochlorite 2 Final distribution 1 Hypochlorite Clean water Good chlorine distribution in the pool, in 1 hour 1

INDUSTRIAL AND VALIDATION PHASE IN CONDITIONING SYSTEM The implementation and validation and the monitoring and dosing automatic control of the installation as well as the analysis of the samples have been carried out in RAPIFE from March 2015 until now. During these months, the following activities had been performed: Conditioning system have been functioning during 5 days a week, 8 hours per day The prototype was controlling the pool during 5 days a week, 8 hours per day, monitoring the content of free chlorine, ph and aerobic bacterium at 37ºC In manual way was performed following analysis: Preparing the nutrient solution to analysis the bacterium at 37ºC Supplying water (aerobic microorganism at 22ºC and 37ºC daily) Pool water of the cooling system (free chlorine, aerobic microorganism at 22 and 37ºC, once a day, Legionella pneumophila, ITMA FAIR - once 12 November a month) 2015, Hotel NH Milano Fiera - Viale degli Alberghi,

RESULTS IN CONDITIONING SYSTEM

RESULTS IN CONDITIONING SYSTEM

MAIN CONCLUSIONS OF THE PROTOTYPE IN P&B:

RESULTS IN CONDIONING SYTEM Hystorical results of RAPIFE (since September 2012 to October 2014): ph: 7,4 7,8 Free Cl (ppm): 1 3 the concentration of free chlorine has to be between 1-2 mg/l. This date is not under control, because there are some points above 2 mg/l Temperature (ºC): Measure and control Twice a week Figure 80. Free chlorine results from July 2014

RESULTS IN CONDIONING SYTEM Chlorine dosage by chlorine tablets for swimming pools Manual control of ph with colorimetric papers Manual control of free chlorine with swimming pool Kits

MAIN CONCLUSIONS OF THE PROTOTYPE IN COOLING TOWER: Despite bad homogenization, the prototype allows to control and monitoring the amount of free chlorine between two values with high accuracy (0,7-1,2 ppm). These quantities imply a reduction between 60-75% of biocide consumption vs conventional mode: 300 /año vs 60 The humidified air, treated by the cooling system with the prototype, is introduced in the company and is breathed by the employees, containing less 50% of free chlorine than previous functioning. The chlorine is considered a harmful substance because of its oxidant power

MAIN CONCLUSIONS OF THE PROTOTYPE IN COOLING TOWER: The prototype allows to control and monitoring the bacterium growing, always bellow ufc although the big inlet water contamination ( ). Historically the concentration of bacterias in the pool is always above to ufc. Depending on the bacterium concentration the prototype analyses 1 or two samples per day, when the bacterium concentration is bellow the prototype needs nearly 24 hours to give the result.
