The three-year bachelor program aims to prepare future engineers for a successful career. The Mechanical Engineering College of the worldwide renowned Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) that is ranked 1 st place in Mechanical Engineering of all German universities (see page 6) does not only offer high-quality lectures by excellent professors of KIT. All students receive an individualized all-in-one service package, support, and mentoring in order to develop their professional profile. While Mechanical Engineering classes at KIT allow for 600 students in the 1 st semester, the Carl Benz School admits a maximum of 50 students. Structure of the Program The Bachelor Program is divided into core studies concluding with a major in Automotive Engineering, Production Management, Energy Engineering and Railway Systems Technology. First Contact with Industry Many graduates are keen to step into the German labour market. To facilitate this, two internships are mandatory for the Bachelor of Science degree. Admission Criteria The fundamental criteria for admissions are excellent grades in mathematics and physics (e.g., HL or AP). Furthermore, applicants need to be proficient in English language. 5 Majors of the Bachelor Program The Most Promising Topics in Engineering Four majors in subjects relevant to the future: Automotive Engineering, Energy Engineering, Production Management, Railway Systems Technology In the course of their Mechanical Engineering studies, Carl Benz School students choose to specialize in (at least) one of the following majors: Automotive Engineering The automotive industry currently undergoes a drastic innovation boost with regard to the development of marketable electro motors, optimization of combustion engines or light-weight design. Students choosing the major in Automotive Engineering profit from the fact that the automotive industry is Germany s largest industry sector with a turnover of approximately 263 billion Euros, covering 20% of the overall turnover of Germany s industry. Ten out of the 100 largest automotive suppliers have either their headquarters or one of their subsidiaries nearby Karlsruhe. At KIT more than 40 institutes with 800 scientists are researching for safer, more comfortable and more efficient cars. Production Management The management of production is a vital key to the operation of companies. This specialization opens doors to countless career opportunities. Students learn about production planning and control, production logistics, distribution centers, optimization of logistical networks, material flow processes and project management. The evaluation of methods in terms of technical and economic aspects and virtual product development processes (product lifecycle management) are also important. Students learn about forms and sources of energy, energy production and storage. They also study the management of energy as well as the utilization of renewable energy sources and learn about economic efficiency in the energy industry and the understanding of technical combustion systems, e.g. engines and turbines. Railway Systems Technology Germany is famous for its high-speed ICE trains and has one of the best railway networks in the world. Students learn about the interrelation between rail vehicles, railway infrastructure and operation. Knowing about the complexities of modern railway networks, students will be fully capable of assuming an executive position in the global railway industry. The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is the one of the leading universities in Mechanical Engineering in Germany & Europe - as is obvious from several rankings*. 7 Carl Benz - Passion for Engineering Tradition in Engineering "The things I have aspired to and created all have roots which lead back to this institution." Carl Benz, looking back on his studies in Karlsruhe Carl Benz s First Inventions Carl Benz was born in Karlsruhe, Baden, Germany in His mother supported him with regard to a good technical education. Benz was able to study Mechanical Engineering at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology at that time, the Polytechnical College. He graduated in 1864 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. During his years at the university, he already started to envision concepts for a vehicle that would eventually become the horseless carriage. Benz s Development Early business misfortunes did not prevent Carl Benz from developing new types of engines and from patenting key engine components. These patents, among them the patent for the first internal combustion engine, soon led to substantial revenue increases. Carl Benz s true genius became obvious thanks to his successive inventions, registered whilst designing what would become the production standard for his two-stroke engine. During this time, he patented the speed regulation system, the ignition using sparks with a battery, the spark plug, the carburetor, the clutch, the gear shift, and the water radiator. Benz and the Motorwagen After years of testing and modifications, Benz created the first commercial vehicle, the Model 3, an automobile with a four-stroke engine of his own design between the rear wheels. It was gasolinepowered, the power being transmitted by means of two roller chains to the rear axle with wooden wheels. This became the first production automobile. Further Development In 1896, Carl Benz was granted a patent for his design of the first boxer engine with horizontally opposed pistons. The great demand for internal combustion engines increased and transformed the Benz & Cie. automobile company. By 1899, it had become the largest of its kind in the world, increasing employment from 50 to 430 workers within 10 years and producing towards 572 automobiles per year. While Benz was designing his boxer engine, Gottlieb Daimler and his lifelong partner Wilhelm Maybach were dreaming of creating small, high-speed engines to be mounted in any kind of self-propelled vehicle. They patented a precursor of the modern petrol engine, which they subsequently fitted to a two-wheeler considered to be the first motorcycle. Later, they founded Daimler Motors (DMG). The competition with Daimler Motors in Stuttgart began to challenge the leadership of Benz & Cie. in Mannheim. World War I led to an economic crisis. In 1926 Benz & Cie. and the Daimler-Motors Company decided to merge and became the Daimler-Benz company, later to be renamed as Daimler-Benz, which is now part of the Daimler AG. After the merger in 1926 all new automobiles were called Mercedes-Benz in the honor of the most important model of the DMG automobiles, the Mercedes 35hp. 7

8 Living & Studying in Karlsruhe A Beautiful City and Rich Region Founded in 1715, Karlsruhe is situated in Germany, close to the borders of France and Switzerland, and has a population of about 300,000 residents. Hidden Jewel in the Heart of Europe In general, Germany is not known for being the world s sunniest country; however the region surrounding Karlsruhe is the exception to the rule. The winters are Culture & Breathtaking Natural Beauty With the Black Forest and the Rhine River the region surrounding Karlsruhe offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy your free time. Besides nice cafés and bars, a big open-air festival "Das Fest" is also held in Karlsruhe. There are a lot of cultural facilities like theaters, cinemas or museums, e.g., the well-known ZKM Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe. Large KIT Campus and Great Student Life Lush greenery through out the campus beckons students to relax or linger during breaks. All important university facilities, offices and support centers can be reached on foot, by bicycle or with public transportation. There is also a 24-hour campus library with 860,000 books and periodicals. Carl Benz School students enjoy the privilege of living right in the middle of the city by taking advantage of the accommodation provided at the CBS campus. Solidarity is fostered when students spend time studying and living together in the 120-room dormitory, where they also make friends for life. Of course, there are various other student housing options available in Karlsruhe. Fig. 11: Karlsruhe palace Beautiful Architecture of the "Fächerstadt" The nickname "Fächerstadt" (fan-shaped city) was given to Karlsruhe due to its unusual architectural design. From a bird s eye view, it is visible that the Palace, which was the center of cultural activity during the Baroque period, has 32 roads extending outwards like sun beams. In fact, this form of architectural design was the inspiration of urban planning of other metropolises, such as Washington D.C. Hub to Europe Frankfurt International Airport can be reached within one hour by train. A smaller airport is located near Karlsruhe with airplanes heading to London, Rome, or Berlin. Thriving Business and Technology Karlsruhe is one of the most dynamic high-tech areas in Europe several companies such as Bosch, Siemens, Daimler, ABB, and Michelin have their production facilities in the so-called Karlsruhe Technology Region. Karlsruhe also hosts a large number of mediumsized businesses in the areas of computer science, multimedia, controls systems, energy technology, environmental sciences, and nanotechnology. Demand for Employees Germany s demand for well-qualified employees, especially in the field of Mechanical Engineering, is ever-growing. Skill shortage is the keyword and it will increase in the coming generations. 10 Success Stories of our Students & Alumni Becoming a Peer Alex Rohregger Former High School: Frankfurt International School, Frankfurt (Germany) Nationality: Italy Alex Story There are so many factors to take into account when choosing the right university and sometimes it is difficult to make the correct first choice. For me, there were several reasons why CBS ended up being my first choice over colleges in the UK such as Imperial College London or University of Bristol. Germany as a country has one of the strongest industries in the world and so naturally it makes sense to study an industrial discipline like Mechanical Engineering in this country. CBS Intake 2014 I decided to study Mechanical Engineering, because I want to discover and innovate mechanical solutions to industrial problems. The second factor was that CBS provides an English taught Mechanical Engineering course in Germany. For me it was really important to continue an English taught education after twelve years of English taught education at school. Another factor is the small class sizes at CBS. Most universities have hundreds of student enrolled in certain courses or lectures which limits both the learning potential and interactivity during the lectures. Therefore, the fact that at CBS at most 40 students are present in one lecture was an important factor in making it my first choice. As far as I can think back I have had a big interest in mechanical devices. I think this interest comes primarily from my early contact with LEGO during my childhood. For me, LEGO showed me how gear systems, suspensions and even the steering system in a car works, just to name a few examples. Soon, I began using LEGO as a way to create my own solutions to problems. I remember building a machine that would turn the pages of a book without having to use my hands. So I would say that the LEGO was a catalyst for starting my growing curiosity for mechanical engineering. I knew for certain that I wanted to study mechanical engineering when I built a pneumatic air engine completely out of LEGO. Isha Gandhi Former High School: William P. Clemens High School, Sugar Land, Texas (United States) Nationality: India Isha s Story Mechanics in High School has always been a subject of interest for me. I like the fact that it s a more tangible application of maths and science, although I enjoy both as subjects on their own. Mechanical Engineering is also a very broad and generalized field that would allow me to later pursue various other interests such as Energy and Product Design. CBS Intake 2013 I like the fact that it s a more tangible application of maths and science. I was always keen on pursuing my undergraduate studies abroad. Germany offered me the ideal opportunity by giving me the chance to combine both my academic as well as my cultural interests. After much research, I came across Carl Benz School which seemed to be a perfect fit. It offered exactly what I was looking for, so without hesitation my parents and I decided to commit. I like that it offers exposure in many different ways, whether it be work-related or people-related. The program is very well-structured, and the majority of the subjects are very interesting, although definitely not easy rides. On top of all that, the central location of the International Department, where CBS is located, is perfect, with an amazing view of the Karlsruhe Palace! Living in Germany so far has been an enriching experience for me, and continues to help me grow as an individual on a daily basis. I ve grown very fond of Karlsruhe and the friendliness of the people here. The KIT campus has a very nice and pleasant atmosphere and that always acts as a motivating factor for my studies here. In fact, I spend so much time at the KIT library; it has almost become my second home! Nothing is set in stone, but upon graduation from CBS, I would like to obtain some work experience before proceeding to a masters. I m looking to go into the field of sustainable development and renewable energies. Ultimately, my goal is to start and develop my own business. 10
