Presentation Overview Overview of Secondary Counseling Program. Success tips for Middle School Parents. Study skills tips for students. High School Graduation Requirements. Upcoming events and important dates.

Overview of the Secondary Counseling Program at AISA To provide assistance to students, parents and the entire AISA community with: Academic Social/emotional Personal College and Career Counseling

Middle School Success Tips for Parents Establish a Homework Routine- This is Sacred time!! Check their planners DAILY. Review their homework with them and ask them questions. Encourage them to ask their teachers for help if they are having a difficult time understanding the concepts. FREE TUTORING!!!! All teachers have office hours every week and are available to answer questions and help students. Establish a D.E.A.R. time every night!!

Middle School Success Tips for Parents Help them with ORGANIZATION!! Help them with their planner. Calendar all test, quizzes and projects. Help them to clean out their notebooks every night. Make sure they get all of their materials ready at night so they don t forget anything.

Middle School Success Tips for Parents Show interest in what is going on at school. Talk to your child daily about what they are learning in each class. Offer to help them study for test/quizzes. Help them with their projects. Attend sporting events and extracurricular activities.

Middle School Success Tips for Parents Know your child s friends. Find out who your child s friends are. Get to know their friends parents too! Ask who they hung out with each day. Find out what and where they were during lunch. Find out what happened in their sports/ extracurricular activities. Invite their friends over to the house.

Middle School Success Tips for Parents Encourage them to get to know their Counselor. I am THEIR Ally and I am YOUR Ally!!!!! I am a resource to them if they are having trouble academically and socially. Let them know that I am here to support them. If student has questions or concerns, encourage them to see me (even if you know the answer).

Middle School Success Tips for Parents TALK LESS LISTEN MORE!! Be a good listener. Let them know you are here to help and to listen if they need anything. Be creative on how you get your information. Try not to pry (too much). Establish a daily family check-in ritual (dinner, family meeting, bed-time).

Research shows that the more involved parents are the more successful their children will be.

Middle School Success Tips for Parents Be visible around school!!! Attend all parent meetings, conferences and school events. Join PTA or volunteer to help at one of their many events. Attend their sporting events, Assemblies and musical performances.

Middle School Success Tips for Parents Stay in contact with your child s teachers. Make an appointment and/or them your questions and concerns. Visit the schools website and read the Chronicle. Make sure the school has your current contact information so we can stay in contact with you. Keep the school calendar visible so you and your child can plan ahead.

Middle School Success Tips for Parents Social/Emotional- A time for many changes. Erik Erikson-Identity vs. Role Confusion (Adolescence, years) Question: Who Am I and What Can I Be? They are concerned about how they appear to others. They have mixed ideas and feelings about how they will fit into school and the world. Friends/socializing mean everything to them!!! Appropriate electronic communication Positive relationships Share serious concerns with counselor/school Push/pull

Middle School Success Tips for Parents Motivate and encourage. Move from extrinsic to intrinsic motivation. Setting personal and academic goals for themselves. Be specific and clear about your expectations and hold them accountable.

Study Skills Tips for Students All Teachers have Office Hours after school. Develop a test calendar so they can strategize how they are going to prepare for an upcoming assessment. * Don t wait until the night before a test! Flash Cards Read/review every night the chapter and their notes.
