4 Master of Engineering in Internetworking 1st Graduate Student Seminar Conference (IGSSC) 4 Foreword Shelley Caines The launch of the first Internetworking Graduate Student Seminar Conference (IGSSC), held May 27, 2013 at the Great Hall, University Club, Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada was a tremendous success. The in-house conference welcomed 62 Internetworking graduate student participants who shared their knowledge and connected with their colleagues through a series of professional oral and poster presentations. Internetworking graduate students presented on various Internetworking topics which contributed to the day being a superb learning activity. Along with the extensive formal activities and learning opportunities, participants also enjoyed other social events in a relaxed environment which allowed them to further grow relationships created previously during their studies. The social networking was highlighted by an official lunch function which was enjoyed by all. Another conference highlight was the interactive and inspiring career discussion lead by Internetworking Alumni, Shekar Kadaba. Shekar, Chief Experience Officer, Rethink55 Workflow Solutions Inc., congratulated the Internetworking students on their accomplishments and encouraged them to embrace the many challenges they will encounter as they move forward with their future endeavours. 5 5 Master of Engineering in Internetworking 1st Graduate Student Seminar Conference (IGSSC) Internetworking Alumni Guest Speaker Shekar Kadaba Founding partner and CEO, Rethink55 Shekar Kadaba, an Alumni of the Internetworking Engineering Graduate program at Dalhousie University, is the founding partner and CEO of Rethink55 responsible for growing it from a 3-man founder based organization to a $5 MM, leading provider of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) solutions for Public and Private educational institutions across Canada and USA. In Shekar s leadership, Rethink55 s flagship product greymatter has been recognized as the CRM solution of the year by Microsoft US and Microsoft Canada. Shekar has been nominated for Calgary s Top-40 under 40, and has served as the President on the Board for the Alberta Contact Centre Association. Shekar is a recognized speaker and educator and has presented at several courses and conferences on Entrepreneurship, Higher Education and Customer Experience.
6 Master of Engineering in Internetworking 1st Graduate Student Seminar Conference (IGSSC) 6 Oral Presentation Session 1 Implementing Open Flow Mohammed Abdul Majid Computer networks lack a general control paradigm, as traditional networks do not provide any network-wide management abstractions. As a result, each new function (such as routing) must provide its own state distribution, element discovery, and failure recovery mechanisms. We believe this lack of a common control platform has significantly hindered the development flexible, reliable and feature-rich network control planes. To address this, we look Onix, a platform on top of which a network control plane can be implemented as a distributed system. Control planes written within Onix operate on a global view of the network, and use basic state distribution primitives provided by the platform. Thus Onix provides a general API for control plane implementations, while allowing them to make their own trade-offs among consistency, durability, and scalability. We first look at what SDN is and What Open Flow is before we go into the details of Onix. Emission Aware and SLA Based (EASB) routing mechanism, also introduced in this work, routes connection requests through greener links and nodes using hybrid cost while requested SLA parameters are still met. With EASB overall emission of network is reduced in a systematic and automatic way without human interaction. 8 Master of Engineering in Internetworking 1st Graduate Student Seminar Conference (IGSSC) 8 Oral Presentation Session 3 Performance Evaluation of Packet Loss Recovery Technique for Real Time Video Encoding Murali Krishnan Padmanaban A testbed is presented for the evaluation of a real time encoding of interactive video applications with packet erasure coding at the IP layer. Specifically, practical video CODECs like H.264/AVC with different packetization strategies are deployed to test the improvements obtained in the recovered video stream for different coding rates in packet erasure codes. Quality of video is analyzed using PSNR of reconstructed video frames under different raw packet loss rates (PLRs) and for different packet sizes. 9 9 Master of Engineering in Internetworking 1st Graduate Student Seminar Conference (IGSSC) Oral Presentation Session 4 Wireless Sensor Networks Vijaykumar, Prashanth Wireless Sensor Networks are formed by hundreds or thousands of Wireless Sensor Nodes, which are capable of sensing, processing and transmitting environmental information. Because of the limited transmission range of the Wireless Sensor Networks, Relays play a major role in the communication between two distant Nodes. In this presentation, we are going to see one of the efficient way of communication of the nodes using Relays. This communication also ensures minimum power consumption in communication, meeting the strict energy requirements of Wireless Sensor Nodes which are equipped only with battery power. I appreciated this conference and I liked the way it was carried out with the coordination of both students and faculty. It was really great spending time with friends and learning new aspects; I hope the conference continues for future students. We should continue to conduct these type of events in the future as it gives students a chance to learn so many things; food was awesome. We are thankful to the whole MEng Internetworking department.
