4 Yoga for Seniors Certificate This pioneering program combines the best of modern, evidencebased medicine with the ancient wisdom, experience and tradition of Yogic teachings, leading to a Yoga for Seniors Certificate. Seniors age 65 and older represent the fastest-growing sector of the U.S. population and like many Americans are increasingly drawn to yoga. Yet there are few places yoga teachers can learn practical strategies for adapting the practice to older bodies, minds and spirits. Since the senior population is expected to more than double to over 80 million by the year 2050 with nearly one-quarter expected to live to age 85 and older it is essential to help yoga instructors learn how to best serve older students. Yoga Therapists Carol Krucoff (Duke Integrative Medicine) and Kimberly Carson (OHSU) will cover health conditions common to seniors, such as heart disease, arthritis and osteoporosis. Then in special hands-on training sessions you will learn how to appropriately modifying postures for safe and effective work with older adults, with emphasis on individuals new to yoga. Special issues on teaching elderly students will be addressed, including pain management, fall prevention, spirituality and aging. Highlights and Benefits of This Program A balance of lecture, movement, small-group work, practice-teaching sessions, and discussion Yoga sessions geared to senior bodies, including chair-based practices and appropriately modified postures for those able to get down and up from the floor Learning about common ailments affecting older adults and how to respond to students complex medical challenges Conceptual models for skillfully adapting postures and practices Coursework consists of a four-day, 21-hour training. A current RYT-200 registration or significant experience teaching adult yoga is required before taking this program. Costs $450 ($520 after August 17, 2014)* * All course prices subject to change. Does not include college credit, travel, lodging or Yoga Alliance registration costs.
5 Lifelong Learning Becoming a good yoga teacher begins by accepting and enacting the practice s basic values yoga as a means of developing self-awareness, character and social responsibility. It can expand our awareness and transform our lives, both internally and in our relationships with others. It is a way for us to learn about ourselves and open ourselves to our fullest potential. We feel that such values are at the heart of yoga and many other contemplative practices not how flexible your hamstrings are or how well you can perform a yoga pose. In this sense, yoga is process of personal growth. As a result, there is nothing to master. There is no limit or end to learning, just infinite possibility for ongoing growth and selftransformation as your knowledge becomes more profound and integrated through your personal practice. Personal practice and practice teaching matters, for through it we learn how we may share yoga with others effectively and meaningfully. It is the heart of much of your training. The Yoga Calm certification programs complements and augments this by preparing you to teach all ages ably and creatively. And because they aim to provide a comprehensive foundation for a lifetime of practice, you will complete the program with the skills and knowledge to continue your evolution as a teacher Learn from the Experts Grounded in decades of yoga, meditation and therapy experience, each of our instructors will provide you with extremely practical, safe and effective methods of supporting your student's physical, mental and emotional health. Here are the instructors that have taught in our program. Julie Gudmestad, Yoga Journal's Anatomy of a Yogi columnist, physical therapist and 30-year Iyengar instructor, teaches yoga anatomy courses worldwide and is the author of over 80 magazine columns on yoga and anatomy. Dr. Ted Forcum is a chiropractor for the U.S. Olympic team and the Portland Timbers. He teaches courses around the world on connective tissue/fascia, injury prevention and treatment and the biomechanics of movement. Kimberly Carson, MPH, E-RYT, is a yoga therapist at OHSU and co-directs the Duke Yoga for Seniors teacher training. She has studied Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) with Jon Kabat-Zinn and has coauthored studies using yoga and meditation for patients with chronic low-back pain, metastatic breast cancer pain, and menopausal symptoms.
6 Carol Krucoff, E-RYT-500, is an award-winning journalist and yoga therapist at Duke Integrative Medicine, and co-director of the Yoga for Seniors teacher training. A contributor to Yoga Journal, Carol is author of Yoga Sparks: 108 Easy Practices for Stress Relief in a Minute or Less and Healing Yoga for Neck and Shoulder Pain, as well as the home practice CD, Healing Moves Yoga. For more info: Mandi Murtaugh has a doctorate in physical therapy and BS in Exercise Science. She specializes in women's health services for Providence Hospital and conducts trainings in core support/pelvic floor health. Benjy & Heather Wertheimer (Shantala) will provide a unique elucidation and musical complement to our studies of yoga philosophy. Benjy has studied East Indian singing and philosophy over the last 30 years and is a graduate of the esteemed Ali Akbar College of Music. Lynea Gillen, LPC, RYT, is the co-founder of Yoga Calm, a child and family counselor and an adjunct faculty member at PSU and Lewis and Clark College. She is the author & producer of several award-winning books, including Yoga Calm for Children and Good People Everywhere, as well as the award winning Kids Teach Yoga: Flying Eagle DVD. Jim Gillen, ERYT-500, ACE-GFI, is a health educator, yoga teacher, co-founder of Yoga Calm and Director of Still Moving Yoga. He has taught and developed youth programs for the National Science Foundation and the National Sports Center for the Disabled. Jim is a coauthor/producer of award-winning books, CD and DVDs. He has four decades of yoga experience and has taught thousands of yoga classes.
7 Frequently Asked Questions Q: What yoga experience do I need to take your certification programs? A: The Youth Instructor Certification program requires no previous experience. The Adult and Yoga for Seniors Certification/Certificate programs require at least one year of experience practicing yoga. You must currently have an RYT-200 or significant experience teaching yoga before registering for the Teaching Yoga to Seniors training. Q: Traveling to a training isn't possible for me at this time, can I take your Youth Instructor Training program online? Or can I fly in for your Intensive and then take the rest online? A: Yes! Now you can take all 5 of the Youth Instructor Certification Courses online or mix and match with live courses depending on your needs and interests. Our unique online course design allows you to learn the Yoga Calm curriculum at a convenient time and location, to repeatedly watch and practice activities, to test and reinforce your new knowledge with interactive quizzes, and to deepen your learning with supplemental materials. Q: Can I use my training and/or certification from another style/school of yoga toward any of the certification programs? A: The Youth and Adult Instructor certification programs require that all contact hours must be from Yoga Calm. The Yoga for Seniors Certificate requires that you have an existing RYT-200 and/or significant yoga teaching experience. Q: After completing the Yoga Calm Youth Instructor Certification program, can I teach the Yoga Calm techniques from the Wellness 1-3 courses to other teachers, counselors and therapists so that they can teach them to children? A: Completion of the Yoga Calm Youth Instructor Certification Program doesn t authorize you to train adults to teach the Yoga Calm youth curriculum. However, you may contact us about becoming a Yoga Calm Trainer to do so. Completion of our Adult Instructor Certification (RYT program) will be a factor in our selection and training of future Yoga Calm Trainers. Q: Does the Youth Instructor Certification program count toward getting a Yoga Alliance-approved 95-hour Registered Children s Yoga Teacher (RCYT) designation? A: There are many reasons we ve decided not to pursue offering a Yoga Alliance RCYT program at this time: 1) Yoga Alliance doesn t currently allow RYT-200 hours to be applied toward RCYT hours and vice versa, resulting in redundant training hours and extra costs to you; 2) Yoga Alliance does not recognize the courses in child development, teaching methodology and physiology that many of our child educators, therapists and professionals have already taken again, resulting in additional costs; 3) The Yoga Alliance RCYT "standards" include the teaching of chanting, energy anatomy (Chakra's, etc) and philosophical concepts that conflict with teaching in secular settings like schools; and 3) We already provide the most accredited, recognized and awarded yoga for youth instructor training program in the industry.
