The School attracts postgraduate students from around the world and has a thriving postgraduate community, with around 150 taught postgraduate students and 40 research students. The world-class reputation of the School is reflected in our 5a grade in the latest research assessment exercise and the School has been delivering top class research and teaching since it was founded in Students at Leeds benefit from being part of the largest legal community in England outside of London and from established links with national and international law firms. The programmes featured in this prospectus are offered via our Centre for and Practice, which is one of four specialist research centres within the School. Other centres are Criminal Justice Studies, International Governance, and European Legal Studies. 3 04 05 The Centre for and Practice LLM International Trade Law The Centre for and Practice seeks to foster study in all areas of and Practice, understood as the legal rules which regulate any form of business activity. We seek to promote all forms of research and to develop contacts between the academic world and the worlds of business and legal practice in order to enhance mutual understanding and awareness. The results of our work are disseminated as widely as possible by publishing monographs, articles and pamphlets as well as by holding seminars with both in-house and outside speakers. Staff from the Centre have teaching expertise in a range of specialist areas and this is reflected in the programmes highlighted within this prospectus which cover most aspects of business law from a European and an international context. Staff members have acted as consultants and advisers to the International Monetary Fund, law firms, accounting bodies, national law reform bodies and government departments in various countries. As the interests and expertise of staff members is broad the Centre is able to conduct research in many fields of business law and to offer a wide range of postgraduate and undergraduate modules. The City of Leeds is a particularly suitable location for this work as it hosts major legal, financial, information technology, commercial and corporate sectors. Our Taught Postgraduate Programmes Our graduates will be enabled to pursue careers in legal practice, or the public service, or any career where success is built upon the ability to understand, analyse and respond to developments in international business law. LLM International LLM International Trade Law LLM Insolvency Law LLM International Corporate Law LLM European and International LLM Banking and Finance Law MA International MA European and International Key Facts Entry requirements: LLM programmes - Applicants should have an upper second class honours degree in law, or a non-uk equivalent. MA programmes Applicants should have an upper second class honours degree in any discipline or a non-uk equivalent. Language requirements: Applicants need to gain a TOEFL score (paper-based test) of at least 600 with 4.0 on the Test of Written English (TWE); or (computer based test) of at least 250 with 4.0 on essay writing; or (internet based test) of at least 100 with at least 22 in listening, 24 in reading, 24 in speaking and 25 in writing; or a minimum IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 in reading and listening, and at least 6.0 in writing and speaking. Duration: All LLM/MA courses are 1 year full-time and 2 years part-time. Postgraduate Diplomas are 9 months full-time and 18 months part-time, Postgraduate Certificates are 4 months full-time or 9 months part-time Teaching methods: Modules are taught by seminars, and there are two 11-week semesters in each academic year. Course structure: Students must take a total of 180M credits, comprised of compulsory modules and option modules. Postgraduate Diplomas (requiring 120 credits) are also available. Postgraduate Certificate requires 60 credits. Assessment All the modules are assessed by way of essays or written projects rather than exams. Dr Amrita Mukherjee This programme focuses on the public international law aspects of international trade, and in particular the regulation of international trade by international law and international institutions, including the World Trade Organisation and the International Monetary Fund.The modules examine the significant role that international law has played in the redistribution of wealth and the reform of the global economic order. International Economic Law provides a comprehensive and critical understanding of the main framework of international law governing international economic relations between States. This module will consider and evaluate in some detail a select group of topics within international economic law. The International Law of Foreign Investment focuses on the big shifts in economic relations witnessed in the recent past underlining the significance of bilateral investment treaties, regional trade and investment agreements and bilateral free trade agreements. World Trade Organisation Law examines recent changes in economic relations which have underlined the significance of international trade regulation in international economic relations among States. 6 10 BUSINESS LAW BUSINESS LAW 11 Research degrees (PhD, MPhil, MA by Research and Integrated PhD research) Fees and funding The Centre for and Practice offers supervision at all levels, PhD, MPhil and MA. Students will be provided with two appropriate supervisors from amongst our experienced and high quality staff. Students are also provided with formal research methods training. We welcome applications from students wishing to pursue research into any aspect of business law and practice. The Centre has particular expertise in a number of areas including corporate law, insolvency law, corporate finance, banking law, world trade organisation law, copyright law, European business law, environmental law, planning law and others. The degree schemes The following schemes are available Master of Arts (MA) one year full-time or two years part-time Master of Philosophy (MPhil) two years full-time or four years part-time Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) three years full-time or five years part-time Integrated PhD four years full-time, not available part-time. This combines taught classes and a traditional research thesis, with an exit award of LLM Legal research if students successfully complete the first two years Entry requirements The entry requirements for all four schemes are that applicants must normally possess an upper second class honours degree or equivalent. Applicants with professional qualifications or substantial professional experience are also encouraged to apply. The academic fee charged by the University covers normal tuition and examination costs as well as membership of the Students Union. Fees must be paid in full before you can register unless you are to be a self-supporting student, in which case you may apply to pay your fees in two instalments. Scholarships Loyalty Scholarships (all students) Scholarships are offered both for postgraduate research and taught programmes at a rate of 10% (for each year of full-time study) towards the cost of any fees not covered by another scholarship to everyone who has already successfully graduated from the School of Law University of Leeds. You do not formally apply for this scholarship as we pay the money directly to the Fees office at registration. NB: the Loyalty Scholarship cannot be held at the same time as any other Scholarship offered by the School of Law. Modern Law Review Scholarships: The Modern Law Review has decided to make available up to 25,000 in financial support for research students engaged on doctoral research on any subject broadly within the publishing interests of the Review. The amount of any award to be made will be at the discretion of the Review, though it is not envisaged that an award will normally exceed 5,000. Awards will be made annually, though provision may be made for renewal. Nominations for a scholarship must be submitted to the Secretary of the Review no later than 1st May.
