EPoSS SRA: Relevant Parts for Generic IoT Infrastructure and the IoT LSPs Cees J.M. Lan+ng (CSEM) Co- Chair of the EPoSS Working Group Smart CommunicaAons & IoT
EPoSS Working Group Smart Communica+ons & IoT Recently renamed to reflect importance of EPoSS ac+vi+es on IoT Co- Chair: Cees J.M. Lan+ng (CSEM) Co- Chair: Antonio LioneQo (STMicroelectronics Copyright 2015 EPoSS Brokerage WS IoT LS- Pilots, London, 26 June 2015 Cees J.M. Lan+ng Page 2
EPoSS SRA update: Disclaimer The EPoSS SRA update is Work in progress, the IoT sec+on is new Today s presenta+on is not more than input into the process: editor of the EPoSS SRA chapter on IoT, the open development and review process has only just started presenta+on somewhat coloured by personal input and views Copyright 2015 EPoSS Brokerage WS IoT LS- Pilots, London, 26 June 2015 Cees J.M. Lan+ng Page 3
EPoSS SRA update: scope EPoSS is about Smart System Integra+on, focusing on the externally visible behaviour of systems, i.e. sensing, actua+ng, communica+ons and func+onality, incl. interpreta+on and control algorithms, and the realisa+on of these systems. Much of what is presented is applicable to the concepts of smart systems as well as CPS, where the laqer can be seen as a generalisa+on of the former concept Copyright 2015 EPoSS Brokerage WS IoT LS- Pilots, London, 26 June 2015 Cees J.M. Lan+ng Page 4
Some observa+ons: what is IoT Preferred defini+on «The Internet of Things is the combina+on of sensors, actuators, distributed computer power, wireless communica+on on the hardware side, and applica+ons and big data/analy+cs on the so`ware side.» Source: Morgan Stanley Research (contributed by Luca Petricca of Broentech) Notes that apply: IoT will likely use the internet and IP, but in an appropriate way Wireless communica+ons: extra degree of freedom, not required If everything is seen as IoT, then some structuring would be helpful In the following we will focus on the IoT hardware and infrastructure Copyright 2015 EPoSS Brokerage WS IoT LS- Pilots, London, 26 June 2015 Cees J.M. Lan+ng Page 5
Compacted model, incl. IoT node Applications Upper protocol stack: may vary significantly (e.g. collapsed layers) TCP IP IoT node: Knowledge base Actual protocol stack Node specificity Lower Layers Lower protocol stack: may be simplified Sensors and actuators Metrology Copyright 2015 EPoSS Brokerage WS IoT LS- Pilots, London, 26 June 2015 Cees J.M. Lan+ng Page 6
Some observa+ons: On networking aspects 1/2 How many connected devices? depending on how and what counted, es+mate: 250 The internet is more complex than it is o`en presented, also for IoT there exists a concatena+on of internets and intranets IP may be overlay network, in par+cular in the access networks many IP enabled devices are in intranets behind firewalls and gateways don t have proper IP addresses, but temporary and mul+plexed IoT communica+ons is more than BT(LP), Wifi and IP many IoT applica+ons will require longer distance (LORA, CGS/UMTS,...., Satellite) higher reliability, beqer security support even wired connec+on for different reasons, incl. pragma+c Copyright 2015 EPoSS Brokerage WS IoT LS- Pilots, London, 26 June 2015 Cees J.M. Lan+ng Page 7
Some observa+ons: On networking aspects 2/2 IoT devices may behave differently from normal IP enabled devices, resul+ng from their func+onality and from constraints may be irresponsive may not be always connected may not always have anything to communicate may not be implemen+ng a full IP stack (e.g. RFID) Will likely require intermediate nodes and plamorm support as their representa+ves. IoT applica+ons will more likely communicate with the representa+ves (plamorm, generic applica+ons, etc.) Copyright 2015 EPoSS Brokerage WS IoT LS- Pilots, London, 26 June 2015 Cees J.M. Lan+ng Page 8
Some observa+ons: Sensing and actua+ng 1/2 Sensing and actua+on Metrology & sensing, control &actua+on, sciences by themselves IoT requires dedicated sensing and actua+ng infrastructure Smart use of other infrastructure may not be a full replacement Example: es+ma+ng traffic status from GSM/UMTS posi+ons Sensors and actuators are not necessarily small most measurements are difficult, only few are simple many measurements are indirect and at a distance, not on- chip Examples of size and distance: environmental measurements energy consump+on measurement pitot tube airspeed meter Copyright 2015 EPoSS Brokerage WS IoT LS- Pilots, London, 26 June 2015 Cees J.M. Lan+ng Page 9
Some representa+ve examples Representa+ve air pollu+on measurement system Representa+ve thermal energy counters Copyright 2015 EPoSS Brokerage WS IoT LS- Pilots, London, 26 June 2015 Cees J.M. Lan+ng Page 10
Some observa+ons: Sensing and actua+ng 2/2 IoT infrastructure is about systems designed to measure and control, using sophis+cated components, techniques, algorithms, so`ware specialised IoT systems embedded IoT (sub)systems in enhanced systems Smart System Integra+on (SSI) is the overall key enabler for IoT infrastructure and hence IoT applica+ons Smart System Integra+on (SSI) applied to IoT makes use of all available technologies and techniques, incl. other Key Enabling Technologies (SSI itself is considered a KET) Copyright 2015 EPoSS Brokerage WS IoT LS- Pilots, London, 26 June 2015 Cees J.M. 15 SSI in IoT: General priori+es lowest power consump+on, as close as possible to minimal energy required energy scavenging op+ons increasing processing power increased reliability security at minimal costs (a trade- off) increased manufacturability: the large expected # of IoT nodes is at least challenging for manufacturing (we expect a discussion at EPoSS Annual Forum in October 2015) Copyright 2015 EPoSS Brokerage WS IoT LS- Pilots, London, 26 June 2015 Cees J.M. 18 Some food for thought Will the internet as we know it last +ll 2035? need to dis+nguish between name space(s), address space, services, overlay networks suppor+ng protocol- suite example: POTS, ISDN, GSM, UMTS, e.g. in all IP Zero delay networking an illusion with current networking & trends Current trend is beqer and longer delay Especially difficult to achieve with frame based transmission, store and forward, media access with conten+on, IP, etc. Measurement without affec+ng the measured item does not exist This is even true for the ecological aspects: longer term, also for IoT leaf infrastructure the target needs to be biocompa+bility and biodegradability.
