BROWARD COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) is the sixth largest public school system in the United States and the second largest in the state of Florida. BCPS is internationally recognized as one of the world s largest fully accredited K-12 and adult school systems, a distinction held since BCPS has more than 260,000 students in 229 schools and education centers, and 94 charter schools. The district also has an award-winning virtual school and serves more than 175,000 adult and continuing education students. BCPS serves a diverse student population with students representing 204 different countries and speaking 130 different languages. With an operating budget of $3 billion for the 2014/15 school year, BCPS is also a vital part of the area s economy and a key contributor to vibrant South Florida communities. Thirteen of Broward s high schools received gold, silver or bronze medals in U.S. News and World Report s Best High Schools 2014 national ranking. In addition, 92 percent of Broward s high schools earned A and B grades. In 2014, BCPS earned the prestigious Digital Content and Curriculum Achievement Award (DCCAA) from the Republic s Center for Digital Education for the District s Digital 5: Pathways to Personalized Learning initiative. The DCCAA recognizes K-12 school districts for using technology to advance digital curriculum and content in exciting ways for students. 4 EDUCATION students experience an opportunity to work with the business community and colleges to learn the foundational skills that are essential to succeed in the workplace. A multitude of programs, courses and activities provide both interdisciplinary and cross-curricula instruction that leads to industry certification, and may result in job placement and college credit. BCPS goal is to graduate students who are college and career ready and can meet the needs of in-demand, high-skill, high-wage occupations at all levels of industry needs. From global logistics to hospitality and tourism to robotics, there are over 31 career and technical industry certified programs offered at BCPS middle and high schools that students can pursue to fulfill their career pathway. BCPS also offers adult and community education programs and services to thousands of economically and ethnically diverse Broward County residents. Programs include Adult Basic Education, Adult Secondary Education, General Educational Development (GED), English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Family/Intergenerational Literacy, Vocational Preparatory Instruction and programs for Adults with Disabilities. There are also fee-based community education/lifelong learning course offerings that include academic, recreational, health, cultural, artistic, social science and parenting preparation programs to enhance skills and develop life-long learning. With classes as diverse as floral arranging, Spanish, tennis, yoga, sculpture and introduction to computers, thousands 82 of Broward residents enjoy applying their talents and learning new skills. Business-Specific Education As businesses identify their workforce requirements, BCPS Technical Colleges (Atlantic, McFatter and Sheridan), Broward College and the area s four-year universities implement state-of-the-industry programs to meet the career interests of students and the staffing requirements of local employers. In a multitude of career areas, students have the opportunity to progress through a seamless workforce education system within the various business sectors. Broward Technical Colleges (formerly Technical Centers) have long been a leader in career, technical and adult education in Florida. The school board s decision to change the names to include the college distinction further strengthens and enhances the educational opportunities for adult students and business partners throughout Broward County. It also supports the district s mission to increase awareness in the community about the many highquality educational options available for adult learners who are seeking career and technical education programs. The Technical Colleges boast state-ofthe-art equipment and facilities, informed and skilled faculty and industry-validated educational programs. E-learning opportunities have been expanded in a variety of workforce education programs to better serve the needs of students who require flexible scheduling options. In addition, the Broward Technical Colleges provide business training solutions on technical college NSU S NEW TECHNOLOGY CENTER Nova Southeastern University (NSU) is building a revolutionary Center for Collaborative Research (CCR) that will house an IBM supercomputer, one of Florida s largest wet labs, the NSU Technology Incubator and some of the world s most accomplished researchers. Located on NSU s main campus in Davie, the 215,000 square-foot facility is expected to be completed in The CCR will provide wet labs for many of NSU s innovative researchers, as well as a General Clinical Research Center, an outpatient facility with a centralized clinical research infrastructure for investigators in multiple disciplines. The center will also house NSU s Institute for Neuro-Immune Medicine; Rumbaugh-Goodwin Institute for Cancer Research; the Emil Buehler Research Center for Engineering, Science and Mathematics; and Broward County s only private incubator for information security businesses. The CCR will be connected to Florida LambdaRail, an ultra-highspeed broadband network that links the state s higher education institutions. The network provides a medium that fosters collaboration and partnerships in support of scientific research, education and 21st century economy initiatives. Following a long-standing relationship between NSU and the United States Geological Survey (USGS), including USGS s current location on NSU s main campus, it is intended that USGS will occupy the entire first floor of the CCR. The USGS and NSU will partner on collaborative inter-disciplinary research involving greater Everglades restoration efforts, hydrology and water resources, and more. Seamless Education Economic forecasts indicate that 80 percent of future occupations will require technical education beyond high school. Through approved agreements, high school and adult students may earn post-secondary college credits toward industry-recognized technical certificates and degrees. In Career and Technical Education, Magnet Programs, the College Academy, Technical Dual Enrollment and Smaller Learning Communities, students receive a rigorous and relevant curriculum and maximum opportunities to meet individual goals. For more information about Broward County Public Schools programs, visit: and Independent and Private Schools Greater Fort has more than 60 private and independent schools that meet a variety of student academic and personal needs. Accredited nonpublic schools hold memberships in organizations such as the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the Florida Council of Independent Schools (FCIS), the Association of Independent Schools of Florida (AISF), the Florida Kindergarten Council (FKC), and several accrediting organizations for religious, proprietary and special needs programs. The major accrediting organizations in Florida are approved by the Florida Association of Academic Nonpublic Schools (FAANS), which in turn is recognized by the Florida Department of Education. More than 30,000 children in Broward attend non-public schools, which offer programs from early childhood education through 12th grade. COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES A wide range of colleges and universities serve Greater Fort, including both state and private-sector institutions offering associate, bachelor, master and doctoral degree programs. More than 40 institutions offer associate s degrees or higher within 30 miles of Fort, including eleven with MBA degrees. Many institutions also offer certificate or custom training programs that focus on workforce development and the needs of Broward employers. Mendez University System features an accelerated dual language (English-Spanish) higher education program for adults. Its bilingual instructors teach a curriculum that is presented 50 percent in English and 50 percent in Spanish, ensuring that graduates will have developed advanced skills in both languages. Bilingual professionals graduate with bachelor or master s degrees in several professional areas including management, human resources, accounting, finance and criminal justice. Broward College Broward College is the oldest and largest institution of higher learning in Greater Fort, serving more than 68,000 students annually. With campuses throughout the region, it is the principal provider of undergraduate higher education for county residents, while attracting scholars from throughout the U.S. and more than 175 nations. It offers a dynamic learning environment with campus-based and online educational and career programs, including certifications, associate and bachelor s degrees, as well as technical and occupational training. Recent highlights: One of the top 10 community colleges in the nation, according to the Washington D.C.-based Aspen Institute. DeVry University With two locations in Greater Fort, DeVry University helps students prepare for workplace challenges by bringing the real world into the classroom, enabling them to receive an education that can lead to meaningful career success. Florida Atlantic University Florida Atlantic University s Davie campus offers more than programs in partnership with Broward College. Recent highlights: Sport management M.B.A. program ranked among the best in the world, according to SportBusiness International. Designated a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance/Cyber Defense Research by the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security. Recipient of the Outstanding Delegation Award in the 2014 National Model United Nations competition in New York City. Two FAU students won the 2014 American Songwriting Award in the Hip Hop category. Kaplan University Kaplan University is part of Kaplan Higher Education, which provides more than 125,000 students with a practical, studentcentered education online and in classrooms at more than 70 campuses across the U.S. and in Europe. Kaplan s varied programs include business, criminal justice, fashion design and graphic arts, health care, information technology and paralegal studies. Keiser University Founded in 1977, Keiser University is a leading statewide provider of careerfocused, post-secondary education. Students benefit from the school s philosophy of a practical, hands-on approach to education, with small class sizes ensuring a more personal learning experience. Classes are offered during the day, evening and online to accommodate students schedules. Keiser offers associate s, bachelor s, master s and doctoral degrees in high demand, career-related fields such as business, information technology, health care, biotechnology, culinary arts, education, and legal studies. Annually, approximately 62 percent of Keiser University students graduate in the science, technology, engineering, math, (STEM) and health care fields. Nova Southeastern University Nova Southeastern University is the nation s ninth largest independent university with 27,000 students, more than 162,000 alumni, a sprawling 314-acre Fort - Davie campus, regional locations around Florida and the Caribbean, and a presence in nine countries around the world. NSU awards associate s, bachelor s, master s, educational specialist, graduate, doctoral and firstprofessional degrees in a wide range of fields. The university offers 150 degree programs including arts and sciences, education, health professions, law, and business and entrepreneurship. Recent highlights: The Alvin Sherman Library, Research and Information Technology Center is Florida s largest library. Classified as a university with high research activity by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. 11 EDUCATION THE PLACE TO LEARN: Broward County Public Schools U.S. News & World Report named 13 BCPS high schools to its list of Best High Schools in the nation for Broward s national gold medal recipients are Cypress Bay High School, Pompano Beach High School and Nova High School. The nine high schools receiving national silver medals are McFatter Technical High School, Somerset Arts Conservatory, Stranahan High School, Fort High School, Atlantic Technical Center and High School, Somerset Academy, Pembroke Pines Charter High School, McArthur High School and Miramar High School. Also, Broward Virtual School received a bronze medal national ranking. In addition to achieving top national ranking, schools represented in the state s top 50 high schools include Cypress Bay High (15), Pompano Beach High (19), Nova High (22), McFatter Technical High (37), Somerset Arts Conservatory (39), Stranahan High (48) and Fort High (53). Nationally ranked high schools rounding out the state s list of top 100 are Atlantic Technical High (55), Somerset Academy (56), Pembroke Pines Charter High (58), McArthur High (71) and Miramar High (81). BCPS earned the prestigious Digital Content and Curriculum Achievement Award (DCCAA) this year from the Republic s Center for Digital Education for the District s Digital 5: Pathways to Personalized Learning initiative. The DCCAA recognizes K-12 school districts for using technology to advance digital curriculum and content in exciting ways for students. In the 2013/14 school year, the district launched the personalized learning initiative called The Digital 5 Project. During its first stage, The Digital 5 Project expanded to 147 classrooms throughout 27 schools, impacting more than 3,200 students. The exciting program redesigns the delivery of instruction and assessment of student learning, supported through a 1:1 technology initiative for fifth grade classrooms. The program fully supports and emphasizes the implementation of Common Core State Standards and provides students with real world learning experiences. High school grades for 2013 released by the Florida Department of Education show BCPS made significant increases in the number of high schools earning A or B grades. Overall, 25 high schools earned an A. 10 earned a B and three earned a C (includes traditional high schools and charter schools). Ninety-two percent earned an A or B grade, an increase from 81 percent in Broward is first in the state for the number of high school students earning Advanced Placement Scholar Awards, Honors and Distinction. The district offers a full range of magnet school programs, from arts and drama to science, and technology, engineering and mathematics to Cambridge and International Baccalaureate to meet the needs and talents of students. The district has 37 magnet program themes in 54 schools at elementary, middle and high school levels. The district s innovative schools provide students unique or thematic instruction. Students attending Innovative Schools receive extra experience and exposure in a particular theme. The district has 64 innovative schools and 34 innovative program themes. The district has more than 14,000 fulltime, instructional staff members. The average experience of a Broward teacher is 16 years, and nearly 56 percent of Broward teachers hold advanced degrees (master s degree or doctorate.) National Board Certification is an advanced teaching credential that is designed to recognize effective and accomplished teachers. BCPS leads the state in the number of national board-certified teachers. BCPS environmental website - BrowardSchoolsGoGreen.com - showcases the district s efforts to go green and serves as an educational tool for students, staff and the community. In what is likely a first for any collegiate high school in the nation, since 2010, 100 percent of the graduates of the College Academy at Broward College earned AA degrees along with ther high school diplomas. Broward Virtual School (BVS) offers full- and part-time enrollment to grades K-12 through an online delivery system. BVS, which has served Broward County students since 2001, is widely recognized as the top performing Virtual School franchise in the state. BCPS opened South Florida s first public military academy in 2012 at Hollywood Hills High School. It offers students the opportunity to engage in rigorous academics, while developing leadership skills and personal discipline guided by a team of teachers, mentors and military instructors. The Linking Educational and Employment Outcomes (LEEO) is an industry partnership, project-based program that gives students real world career exposure and experience with emphasis on employability and workplace skills. Since its launch during the 2012/13 school year, it has now expanded to six schools, and will provide seven potential career certifications during the 2014/15 school year.
