NAPLES AND SURROUNDINGS The historical center of Naples : Spaccanapoli The path starts with a visit to "Spaccanapoli", as the Decumanus Inferior of the ancient Neapolis is definied, of whom we perfectly read the ancient urban layout featuring characterized by hinges and decumani. It includes a visit to the baroque churc, Chiesa del Gesù, the Convent of Santa Chiara with its fourteenth century church and its cloister decorated in the eighteenth century by the precious "riggiole" majolica of brothers Massa. We arrive, then, crossing Piazza San Domenico, in Via San Gregorio Armeno, the famous street of the shepherds, that between folklore and tradition, hides the beautiful church of the same name which is surprising for the exuberance of decoration. The historical center of Naples: from the Cathedral to San Gregorio Armeno A visit to the Cathedral of Naples and the famous Chapel of the Treasure of San Gennaro inside, offers visitors the chance to grasp fully the sacredness of one of the services most felt by the Neapolitans and the magnificence of the Baroque more authentic. 4 Naples views : from Castel dell Ovo to Posillipo The route will visit the most scenic and fascinating spots of the city : from the hill of Posillipo and the promenade of Via Caracciolo to Castel dell Ovo. From the hill you can enjoy the breathtaking views of the Gulf of Naples, you ll sea its typical half-moon. You ll enjoy the unusual beauty of the islands and the imposing Mount Vesuvius, this hill was inhabited by the Greeks 2500 years ago. We will cross then via Caracciolo, created on a sea filled in the nineteenth century, is considered one of the most beautiful coastal world. Phlegraean Fields The visit will allow you to discover the so-called "burning fields" as defined by the Greeks for the volcanic nature of the place that still fascinates with the presence of several extinct craters. To their dormant volcanic activity are connected bradyseism and thermalism that once made believe Aegean settlers to have found places narrated in the Homeric poems. We propose two itineraries. First Itinerary : Pozzuoli and Cumae A first itinerary includes a visit of Pozzuoli, you ll visit Flavio amphitheater and the Temple of Serapis, to the discovery of the last vestiges of Puteoli, the main port of Rome to the East in the second century BC.On the same day, you ll visit Cumae, to the discovery of ancient ruins of the first colony of Magna Grecia in the Mediterranean. Pozzuoli: Flavio amphitheater and the Temple of Serapis The amphitheater of Pozzuoli is the third largest built in Italy after the Colosseum and the amphitheater of Capua. Probably built by the same architects who designed the Colosseum, it has an auditorium that can contain about 20,000 spectators. Very impressive are the underground areas, in excellent condition, used for the creation of "special effects" and dynamic scenes during the gladiatorial games. The temple of Serapis is a macellum dating from the late first century AD incorrectly identified in this way for the discovery of the statue of the Egyptian divinity. With its square structure and the shops lined on the sides of a large paved courtyard, it is the only example of a market close to the harbor to witness the commercial districts of ancient Puteoli. The old Baia, famous for its hot springs and its beauty, was a resort and resting place of the Roman aristocracy as evidenced by the remains of the ancient spa complex which contains valuable evidence of the ancient patrician residences and facilities thermal of imperial era (I-IV century AD.), scenically located on terraces sloping down towards the sea. We will go on with the visit of the castle built by King Alfonso II of Aragon at the end of the fifteenth century, and almost entirely rebuilt by order of the viceroy Don Pedro de Toledo, which is today the Archaeological Museum of the Phlegraean Fields.
