Summary lovelife is South Africa s largest national HIV prevention initiative for young people. It combines a highpowered media campaign with a nationwide network of communitylevel outreach and support programmes to support an HIV-free life among South African teens. When it comes to preventing new HIV infections capturing data in real time and reporting back on the work done is vital to the overall success of the programme. In order to accurately evaluate and monitor the success of its programmes, lovelife needed to significantly reduce the amount of time it took to receive reports from their field workers and assess the accuracy of the data. Since the reports were handwritten and paper-based, the collection of data was very slow. Since lovelife relies hugely on community leaders called groundbreakers across the country to deliver their programme on the ground, they required a modern and reliable monitoring system that tracks all programme activity operated by these young leaders who work in over 880 communities nationwide. Workflow description The move to a mobile platform required that, for the first time, lovelife provided cellphones to its groundbreakers and 3G-enabled laptops to its 154 Regional Programme Leaders. This provided the groundbreakers with an essential tool and technology for data capture since they are responsible for all aspects of capacitating, managing, and mentoring. This meant that they could now input data about programme activities and outcomes on the spot and accurately from wherever they were. This data capture is critical for accurate monitoring and evaluation. The move to a mobile platform marked a significant change from traditional programme monitoring. For the past 12 years, lovelife used a paper-based system. The groundbreakers had to handwrite data on forms. The forms were then couriered each month to the national office. This meant that it could take up to eight weeks to record an event.
