Department of Theatre and Drama Degree Requirements DIRECTING The aim of Theatre and Drama studies is to familiarise the students with the practices of theatre, drama and dramaturgy, directing and acting and doing and studying art and to influence the renewal of the arts they represent. The objective is to offer studies that will give the graduates an opportunity to work as artists and to exert an influence through their art. In addition to the students' personal growth as artists, the studies offered by the Department of Theatre and Drama emphasise the communal nature of theatre. The majority of modules are based on studying together in the form of shared stage studies, or demonstration performances and productions staged with students from the other programmes. The aim is to guide future theatre artists in finding and creating joint themes, forms, working methods and a dramatic language while they are still students, and to meet future colleagues among their fellow students. The students are expected to have an ability to work together interactively on a team and to show respect for each other. The aim of the studies is to support the students' continuous personal growth and to help them to find their identity as team members. During their studies, they will work together with students of acting, choreography, dance, sound and lighting design, cinematic art, stage lighting and costume design. Other partners will include theatres, operators in the field of theatre, universities and other stakeholders. Degree Programmes and degrees in Theatre and Drama The Department of Theatre and Drama offers four different degree programmes. Students of dramaturgy, acting and directing are granted a right to study for a three-year Bachelor's degree, upon completion of which they will have a right to take advanced studies in a two-year Master's degree programme. Students in the Master's degree programmes in Performance and Theory will be granted the right to study in a post-graduate Master's degree programme in Theatre and Drama. Degree requirements for the English-language Master's programme in Performance and Theory for have been adopted under the title The MA Degree Programme in Live Art and Performance Studies. The following pages describe the degree requirements for the years of the five-year degree programmes offered by the Department of Theatre and Drama. Individual study plans At the beginning of the academic year, the students will draw up individual study plans to support their studies, which will be approved by the professor of the degree programme, a course supervisor or the student's own teacher. The study plan comprises individual study modules selected on the basis of the degree structure of the programme, which the student must take and for which they have the right to study as well as a planned schedule. In the Bachelor's degree studies, a group study plan may also be used. Under the Degree Regulations of the Theatre Academy, students with no approved individual study plan cannot take part in the instruction, and no study attainments can be credited to them. The attainments are examined at least twice a year, at the end of the spring term and at the beginning of the autumn term. The students keep a learning journal in which they collect written, image and sound material from productions and document their other study modules. The aim of the learning journal is to produce a learning portfolio, which is the final project for the Bachelor's degree. The learning journal supports the students in identifying their own stage of development, assessing their learning and preparing their individual study plans for the Master's programme. The course supervisor or the students' own teacher will instruct first-year students in the journal practices of each degree programme. 1

Progress in the studies The extent of the Bachelor's degree programme in Theatre and Drama is 180 credits. The studies must be passed in compliance with the degree requirements. Instruction in the Bachelor's degree programme is arranged around the years of study, and the studies require full-time attendance. The study modules are obligatory and they must be acceptably passed for the student to have the right to participate in subsequent modules. A requirement for passing the study modules is an active presence at the lesson. Equivalency credits, or degree attainments achieved at other institutes of learning, will be subject to prior discussion with the professor, the student's own teacher or a course supervisor. The students must take a Bachelor's degree before moving on to the Master's degree programme. The aim of the Bachelor's degree studies is to give the student a basic competence in the field. The studies also provide the students with the prerequisites needed for taking part in education leading to a post-graduate degree (Master's degree) and continuous learning. The extent of the Master's degree programme is 120 credits. Alternatives are offered in the Master's degree studies which stress the significance of independent work in planning and completing the studies. The individual study plan for the Master's degree studies covers two years. For those admitted directly to study for a Master's degree, this period may be extended in the event that complementary studies are required in order for the students to meet the criteria for the Bachelor's degree. In the Master's degree studies, the students progress in their artistic vision and research approach and extend their vocational competence. The Master's degree studies lay a foundation for any further studies, which offer opportunities for more in-depth research in and renewal of one's field of art. Structure of the Bachelor's degree studies Common studies Orientation in the Studies and the Profession (7 credits) and Language and Communication Studies (11 credits) are general obligatory studies included within all Bachelor's degree programmes of the Theatre Academy. The common basic studies of the Bachelor's degree programme in the Department of Theatre and Drama include Studies of Theatre History and Theory (18-20 credits) and Knowledge of and Research in Performing Arts (10-15 credits). The common basic studies lay a good foundation for cooperation between future specialists in various professions while they are still students. History studies make up a large share of the theoretical studies included within the Bachelor's degree programme. The aim of studying the history and theory of theatre is to give the students a general idea and understanding of the basics and the history of their vocational field. In their theatre history studies, the students familiarise themselves with the main features of the history of Western drama. In successive years of study, the main themes of the theatre history studies include the history of Finnish theatre, the realistic theatre tradition, and the theatrical and ritualistic theatre traditions. The aim of studies imparting knowledge in and researching the performing arts is to give the students a general idea and understanding of the field and techniques of theatre and drama and to learn about the working principles of a creative artistic group. The intermediate studies of each study programme impart basic skills in the students' own field of art. In addition to studies in the student's selected subject, intermediate studies are also provided in the form of common studies. 2

The wide-ranging common intermediate study modules of the Department of Theatre and Drama are Theatrical Traditions and their Applications (6-15 credits) and the Shared Stage (32-44 credits). Theatrical traditions and their applications guide the students in understanding the traditions of their profession and in perceiving theatre and drama within a wider historical, social and cultural context. The students are encouraged to look at historical phenomena from the perspective of contemporary theatre and, guided by their personal interests, to use them as artistic stimuli. The shared stage studies provide the students with instruction in theatre work through a joint process. The aim of the instruction is to model the cooperation between various competence areas that is one of the operating preconditions of theatre work and to familiarise the students with the basic questions of their own field of art in a joint artistic and production process. The aim of the common studies is to familiarize the students with their own learning environment and its conceptual, functional and communal operating methods. Structure of the Master's degree studies The common theory and research studies of the Master's degree programme in the Department of Theatre and Drama take the common basic studies of the Bachelor's degree in Theatre and Drama to a more advanced level in the areas of knowledge of and research in art, performance studies and studies in history and theory. Theoretical subjects and a research-oriented approach are an essential part of the Master's degree studies. These will guide the students towards more in-depth thinking and knowledge of their own field and train them in conceptual thinking in the areas of both art and theatre research. In the advanced studies for their own subject, the students will develop their vocational skills and artistic expression. The students will expand their skills and competence by focusing on and specialising in an area of personal interest. The shared stage studies comprise joint theatrical productions of the Theatre Academy's various study programmes, including production processes and common optional studies. The shared stage studies will improve the students' ability to act creatively in the process of artistic team work together with other participants while also discovering their individual strengths. In their optional studies, the students will focus on subjects that are of interest for their own artistic quality and thus build up their knowledge and skills. Working life studies and projects contain artistic work or work practice in the field of theatre and various study projects, such as a period abroad as an exchange student. The students will deepen their artistic knowledge of and skills in artistic education and expand their understanding of society, different cultures and art, and they will get to know operators in the field of theatre, network and create opportunities for cooperation while still students. The study module for graduation consists of personal guidance, a final project seminar and an artistic final project which includes a written section. The final project of the Master's degree may be 1) an artistic work and a written section associated either with the artistic work or some other subject or 2) a thesis. The artistic project is a work in the field of drama and/or dramaturgy, a role/roles in a full-length performance or else directing the performance, which the student may realise either in the Theatre Academy or in a professional theatre. 3

Student feedback practices and assessment of learning Student feedback on study modules is systematically collected in the Department of Theatre and Drama both orally and in writing in connection with course implementation and anonymously through an on-line survey conducted each term. The feedback is used to plan the instruction, and it is discussed in one departmental meeting each term. Regarding the assessment of learning, the aims of and, consequently, the grounds for assessment are recorded in the degree requirements in order to give the students an idea of the skills and knowledge towards which their studies aim. Assessment is an attempt to guide and encourage the students in their studies and to develop their capacity for self-assessment. Assessment should be seen as a process in which targets, assessing their achievement and the setting of new targets form a continuum that promotes the learning of individual students or groups. In this respect, a freely worded assessment is more useful than a graded assessment. The students should be personally involved in setting the targets. The students' teacher or course supervisor will monitor the progress of studies and engage in artistic and pedagogical dialogue with the students. It is important to be aware of the student's situation in order for the assessment and feedback to be relevant to student's personal world. The starting point for giving feedback should always be encouragement, and the feedback should be adequately clear and comprehensible to the student. The essential feature of learning in theatre work studies of the shared stage are processes aiming at creating a performance, in which the students examine the dramatisation of a common theme. In the course of monitoring the processes of theatre work, the phases of the student's work process are discussed with the supervising teachers. The students will learn to resolve problems associated with the process through discussion and become aware of the questions related to theatre work. Constructive feedback from supervising teachers will allow the students to assess and develop their own work. The final feedback for theatre work is a debriefing where each student personally assesses the successes and challenges of the process and their own learning. The students assess their own capacity for interactive teamwork. In the debriefings for the shared stage performances (Theatre Work 3: Master's Degree Productions), the students are able to analyse the content, form and meaning of the performances. They are able to reflect upon their own work and to give and receive feedback. To help the students learn, an effort is made to provide continuous assessment in the instruction. The starting point for continuous assessment is the interaction between the teacher and the student. Rather than offering ready-made models and solutions, the teacher will stimulate the student's own thinking by asking questions and engaging in dialogue, enhance the student's confidence in his or her own ability to hear and observe, and guide the student in drawing conclusions and changing their actions accordingly. In other words, continuous assessment also includes instruction in self-assessment. The basic tone of continuous assessment is positive. Each student has the right to experience him/herself as a good learner. Instead of finding fault, the assessment puts emphasis on what has already been learnt, while the learning of new skills builds upon the competence achieved earlier. The learning progresses by continuously setting the student new, appropriately selected shortterm targets. When implemented correctly, continuous assessment supports the development of good selfconfidence and a positive self-image. Preserving the joy of learning, a realistic idea of one's own skills, a positive relationship with one's artistry and good self-direction are signs of successful continuous assessment. Studying abroad A study module in a foreign partner university of the department can be accredited as part of the degree. The Department of Theatre and Drama recommends that a period as an exchange student is taken during the 4

Master's degree studies. When preparing an individual study plan, an agreement on a period as an exchange student will be made with the professor, the supervising teacher or the student's own teacher. DEGREE PROGRAMME IN DIRECTING AND BACHELOR'S DEGREE IN THEATRE AND DRAMA The Degree Programme in Directing provides the students with prerequisites for continuously developing their personal artistic quality and capacity for further studies. The essential aims of the degree programme include continuous development of artistic expression and vision, an unprejudiced flow of ideas and analytical and critical thinking. The studies offer knowledge, skills, and techniques associated with working in the profession of a director, improve familiarity with and mastery of various production models and introduce the students to the diverse field of theatre and art. The aim of the studies is to give the students an in-depth understanding of the nature of theatrical arts, their history and their current status and to enable them to create their own themes, forms, working methods and dramatic language in the continuously changing field of theatrical arts. The studies aim at an open, inquisitive and dialogic atmosphere and a willingness to examine issues related to one's own field of art, culture and society. The aim of the degree is to turn out professionals who master their field of art and are also able to develop it further. Each student in the Degree Programme in Directing is assigned a personal supervising teacher. The supervising teacher prepares an individual study plan for the student with him or her, introduces the student to the learning journal practice, monitors the progress of his or her studies, and engages in an artistic and pedagogical dialogue with the student. Objectives and contents of the Bachelor's degree in directing The aim of the Bachelor's degree is to provide the students with the versatile basic skills to master the work of a director and to give them prerequisites for taking a Master's degree. The three-year Bachelor's degree programme in directing consists of basic, intermediate and advanced studies. The basic studies include those in History and Theory as well as a study module on Knowledge of and Research in Performing Arts. The aim of the basic studies is to enable the students to apply the knowledge they have accumulated in their personal artistic work. The intermediate studies of the Bachelor's degree in directing include study modules in Directing, Dramaturgy, Acting and Theatre Traditions and their Applications, as well as the Shared Stage Studies. In the study modules on Directing, Dramaturgy and Acting, not only theory but also workshops and the associated demonstration performances are an essential part of the instruction. During their studies, the students familiarise themselves with the significance of the director's work in various aspects of theatre activities, and as their studies progress, they develop their knowledge, skills and artistic capacities in their own work. The students are introduced to theatre traditions and their applications in seminars and the associated stage workshops and demonstration performances. In their studies, the students refine their thinking associated with performability and performing and examine on stage the theories they have assimilated, thus creating new applications and developing their own stage thinking. A large part of the degree consists of the Shared Stage Studies, which comprise directing theatre performances and the pre-performance processes. In the Bachelor's degree programme, the students complete three modules of theatre work, which include directing an Etude, a Classic (a limited section) and the First Performance of a Finnish Play. This work is conducted together with students from other degree programmes. The aim of the 5

studies is that the students are capable of interactive team work, show respect for others and are able to share their views productively and in a goal-oriented manner with their team both as its leader and as a member of the team. The study module for graduation comprises the final project for a Bachelor's degree. The final project for a Bachelor s degree in Theatre and Drama is a learning portfolio, where the students assess their personal development during their studies. The students collect material for their learning portfolios by keeping a learning journal and by writing reports and doing exercises associated with the study module throughout their Bachelor's degree studies. Study path for directing First year The studies in directing begin with the study modules for the Basic Seminar and Movement and Voice, which are taken together with the students of dramaturgy and acting. In these modules the students familiarise themselves with psychophysical emotion, impulse, contact, listening, mental imaging, voice and movement improvisation exercises. The students practice alone, in pairs and in groups. The aim of the study modules is that the students learn to work in an active, creative and open teamwork process and understand the human being as a psychophysical entity. The Basic Seminar module concludes with a demonstration performance staged together with the students of dramaturgy and acting. In their first year of studies, the students take part, together with other students, in study modules that are common for several degree programmes and familiarise themselves with the basics of various aspects of the profession. These modules include the Basics of Dramaturgy, Performance Studies, Drama, Group Dynamics and Artistic Teamwork as well as Aristotelian Dramaturgy. In the studies that cross the boundaries of degree programmes, the students become acquainted with shared questions related to the artistic professions and are oriented in the aims of the Theatre Academy and their own degree programme. In Theatre History and the Applications of Acting Tradition, the students are introduced to the realistic tradition of theatre. Together with the students of dramaturgy and acting, the students examine and apply the acting method developed by the Russian actor, director and theatre theoretician Constantin Stanislavski through workshop activities. In the Basics of Drama 1 module, which is part of dramaturgy studies, the students become acquainted with the basic concepts and structures of dramaturgy and practise operating with them through practical writing exercises, discussions and lectures. They learn to recognise the special quality of their personal expression and their interests. The study modules in drama analysis continue throughout the three years of study. They train the students to read plays accurately and to study the relationship between content and form. The study modules in directing (Directing 1) include the Basics of Directing, Directing and the Actor, Directing Workshop and The Art of a Director. The aim of the studies is that the students perceive the basic laws of a director's work and understand its significance in theatre activities, are able to give a bodily expression and make tangible their ideas through an actor on stage, are able to direct a scene in a written play based on their own interpretation and recognise the dimensions and possibilities of a director's art through encounters with professionals and by analysing their performances. In addition to theory, the instruction includes workshops, the associated demonstration performances and visits from professional artists. All of these studies help to create prerequisites for the first performance that the students direct. The Shared Stage study module of the first year is Theatre Work 1, or Directing an Etude. The etude is staged together with students from dramaturgy and acting. Before directing an etude, the students take part in a 6

stage workshop and a direction planning module. The aim of Theatre Work 1 is that the students are able to operate in a teamwork process as interactive leaders, they are able to make their artistic ideas comprehensible to others and they solve the challenges of the process creatively and in an unprejudiced manner based upon their own vision together with the other members of the team. Second year In their second year, the students are introduced to the theatrical tradition of theatre in Theatre History and Applications of Theatre Traditions. In the Theatrical Theatre seminar, they familiarise themselves with the theories of Bertolt Brecht or some other director of theatrical theatre and are introduced to their current manifestations in performing arts. In the Stage Workshop module, they approach the theories from a modern perspective together with students from dramaturgy and acting. The aim of this study module is that the students test the starting points of theatrical theatre on stage and develop their own applications, means of expression and stage thinking based on the theories. The Stage Workshop module concludes with a demonstration performance staged together with the students of dramaturgy and acting. In Theory Studies and modules on Knowledge of the Performing Arts, the students are introduced to Art history, Art philosophy, Music theory and the Basics of choreography. The study modules on directing (Directing 2) include Directing an Actor, the Art of a Director, Artistic Advance Planning and Assisting a Professional Director. In the modules on Directing an Actor and the Art of a Director, the students develop their ability to communicate with an actor to make their theme visible in the manners of acting and performing, and they expand their ideas of doing theatrical arts by getting to know directors active in the profession, their artistic starting points and their working methods. Through them, the students can also examine and assess their own thinking about doing art. The foundation for the module on Artistic Advance Planning is the Basics of Artistic Teamwork module in the first year. The studies are taken together with students from dramaturgy and set, costume, lighting and sound design. The module gives the students competence in an open and interactive collective planning process where they respect each other while searching for a shared view of a given dramatic text. The students understand the significance of different areas of artistic planning when creating dramatic language. The module on Artistic Advance Planning concludes with turning the work plans into demonstration performances. The basic and intermediate studies for the first and second year create prerequisites for the second direction work. The Shared Stage study module for second-year students of directing is Theatre Work 2, or Directing a Classic. The students select a restricted section of a classic and turn it into a performance. The classic is staged together with students from dramaturgy and set, costume, lighting and sound design. The direction of a classic is preceded by the advance planning of a classic. The aim of Theatre Work 2 is that the students are able to create a shared view with all members of the team based upon their own interpretation. The students learn to give constructive feedback to the team during the process, and they are able to assess and change the emphasis of their direction based upon understanding obtained through rehearsals. In the Writer-Director seminar and stage workshop that take place in the spring term of the second year, the relation between a play and direction and the associated questions are discussed. The focus is on the theme, the structure and examining the relationship between a performance and a written work. In the stage workshop, the students will learn to recognise the characteristics of different types of texts together with the students from dramaturgy and acting. These studies will lead the students towards the Theatre Work 3 module in the third year. The second year is concluded by a study module on Assisting a Professional Director, which continues in the autumn term of the third year. The students develop their ideas of theatrical arts by getting to know the artistic starting points, working methods and dramatic language of a director of their choice. 7

Third year In their third-year studies, the students familiarise themselves with the tradition of ritualistic theatre both in the Theatre History and in the Applications of Theatre Traditions modules. The aim of these modules is that students are able to analyse the starting points of ritualistic theatre and assess its modern-day manifestations, and create their own applications in the stage workshop. The Writer-Director cooperation that leads into the Theatre Work 3 module continues as a long-term project throughout the autumn term in the form of student meetings and discussions, and it concludes with the joint reading of the plays together with acting students. In the specialist module on Drama and Dramaturgy, the students familiarise themselves with the selected special subject or theme of dramaturgy or theatre theory and build up their knowledge and skills in the subjects discussed. Study modules on directing (Directing 3) include Assisting a Professional Director, the Art of a Director, Directing Workshop and a Specialist Field of Directing. The aim of these study modules is to improve the students' knowledge and skills and their artistic capacity. This takes place through work practice, sketch directions created in the workshop and their personal assessment and by the students familiarising themselves in rehearsal situations with specialist areas of directing, such as the module on Partnering with Light and Sound. The Shared Stage study module for third-year students of directing is Theatre Work 3, or Directing a First Performance of a Finnish Play. The directing work is preceded by artistic advance planning together with a set, costume and lighting and sound design student. The aim is for the students find a personal interface with the world of a dramatic text written by a student of dramaturgy and for them to be able to communicate their approach to the planning team, together with whom they search for a shared view for the basis of planning the performance. In the rehearsal process, the students apply and develop the ideas drafted in the advance planning stage with the whole team and assume the supervisory and artistic responsibility of the director. The aim of the Theatre Work 3 module is that the students are able to direct a performance that makes visible the personal dramatic language emerging from a shared vision. The final project for the Bachelor's degree consists of a learning portfolio and its presentation. In the learning portfolio, the students examine and assess their personal development as theatre artists. 8
