4 Who We Are Noreen Tehrani has been working in the field of traumatic stress for the past twenty years, during which time she has trained hundreds of practitioners in the skills of providing appropriate trauma support for both organisations and individuals. The partnership with the Professional Development Foundation and Middlesex University has provided an opportunity to offer training which will provide recognition of the standards of practice attained, together with the opportunity to contribute to the enrichment of knowledge within the traumatic stress field. We know how important it is to offer programmes that meet the differing needs and aspirations of our trainees. This prospectus outlines the routes to achieve an Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) endorsed award, a Postgraduate Certificate or Chartered Management Institute Diploma, a Master s Degree (MSc), a Doctorate in Professional Studies (DProf) or even a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). With all these options open to you it is sometimes difficult to decide what you want to do, why not get in touch to discuss your precise requirements and aspirations. The seven trauma experts making up the Faculty Board and the other Faculty Members are internationally recognised practitioners and researchers who work together to provide a challenging and rewarding experience for the candidates. We recognise that everyone s needs are different, so we have created a highly flexible approach to learning with workshops to provide the psychological underpinning for the other modules. While there are some limitations around which modules can be chosen, we are confident that you will find something to meet most needs. Our courses and materials are continuously evaluated and updated drawing on the experience of those involved in delivering the training. All the modules are work-based and aimed at developing your abilities in trauma support within your own practice. Although the assessments are rigorous and continually audited through the PDF and Middlesex University, the focus of the training modules is on practice and on your own practice in particular. 04 Who We Are

18 Practice Modules There are currently ten practice modules and even more are in development. If you are interested in attending any of the modules please register your interest at Crisis Interventions in Organisations This module will enable the participants to deal with a disaster or crisis situation and to help to prepare organisations by running training and education programmes to help supervisors and team leaders to support their teams to deal with and recover from traumatic exposures. Psychological First Aid Individual and Group Debriefing This module is particularly suited to participants who wish to go a little deeper in supporting those affected by trauma. During the training a number of psychological first aid models will be compared and contrasted and common features identified. The criteria for using psychological first aid with individuals and groups will be explored. Psychological Interventions Following Trauma Psychological debriefing and consultative support This module is available to experienced psychologists, counsellors, social workers, mental health practitioners and therapists. The module enables the participants to identify the impact of psychological trauma on primary victims, supporters and other secondary victims who have been indirectly involved in traumatic events. Trauma Focussed Cognitive Behavioural Therapy The two versions of TF-CBT intervention use a series of exercises, education and discussion to address the trauma responses of arousal, re-experience and avoidance. While the intervention has been designed to be used in a group setting the techniques employed can also be used with a single client. Traumatic Incident Reduction This module is available for a wide range of practitioners, however, as some trainees may not have the necessary level of personal resilience to be able to support traumatised clients there will be required to undergo pre-selection screening. The central concepts of TIR are to expose the client to the trauma repeatedly, working with one or a group of related traumas in a single session until resolution is reached. Managing the Psychological Impact of Trauma in the Workplace This module provides the participants with an opportunity to learn how to respond to the psychosocial needs of their employees involved with a major crisis or disaster. Practice in handling simulated traumatic incidents, setting up a crisis helpdesk, developing critical thinking skills and dealing with distressed employees and their families is critical to the management of a crisis or disaster. 18 Practice Modules

19 Audit & Reflection in the Improvement of Applied Trauma Psychology Services Auditing Applied Trauma Psychology services is essential if organisations and users are to be certain that the structure, process and outcomes of the Applied Trauma Psychology services are of the highest standards. Building Resilient Workers and Organisations In this module the candidate will have an opportunity to explore the multidimensional characteristics of resilience which can be found in people and organisations. By understanding and developing resilience it is possible to build a set of skills and characteristics which will help to bring understanding, meaning and wholeness. Modules in Development The following modules are currently under development: Effective Responses to Bullying and Abrasiveness in the Workplace Creating Sane Societies and Communities Law Enforcement and Protecting Vulnerable People Modules A number of modules are available for Police Forces and others involved in protecting children and other vulnerable people. 20 Frequently Asked Questions Is a work based degree of equal standing to other university Master s Degrees? The Postgraduate Certificate and Master s Degree are assessed to the same level and rigour as a conventional PGC or MSc. The difference is that you will need to show the impact and application of your studies within your professional work. It enables practitioners to attain excellence in their professional practice and have that excellence acknowledged. Previous PDF candidates have presented their work at professional conferences and published within refereed journals. This is practice we encourage. All our research supervisors are research active in publishing at the highest level. I already have a Master s Degree but would like to do a Doctorate, what are my options with PDF? You need to talk to us and we can explore what makes best sense for you. We will provide clear guidance based on your professional and personal needs. We can offer two routes to a doctorate depending on your interests. I am currently working as a team leader in a Social Work team and would like to be able to support my team members what route would be most appropriate for me? We offer two routes for those who have a management role. One is academic and the other has a stronger business focus. Both routes will help you to support your staff and build an effective model of practice within trauma services. I am not really academic and I have never done any research before, do you think that I could take a PGC in Applied Trauma? The Postgraduate route is work based, that is, you are supported to develop your understanding of the field as it is applied to your work context. The project you will be asked to complete is also work based. We provide support to help you design an appropriate project to meet your own and your organizations needs. What if I register as a Master s student and then decide that I do not want to go beyond the Postgraduate Certificate? If you register for the Master s and then change your mind you can request to be a Postgraduate Certificate finalist and be awarded the Post Graduate Certificate. Can I just come to the workshops without taking any tests or exams? Yes, you are welcome to attend as each workshop can be taken as a standalone event. However you might find it helpful to test your learning by answering the questions in the knowledge test What can I work on in my project? This is your opportunity to carry out a research project which addresses questions and dilemmas about which you are passionate. We actively encourage creative and exploratory research which will impact significantly on you and your fellow professionals work. It must be innovative and highly strategic in nature. 20 Frequently Asked Questions

21 What academic qualifications do I need to enter the Trauma Support Programme? The approach taken involves advanced professional practice so traditional academic entry qualifications are not prescribed. You will need to be able to demonstrate that you are able to undertake project work within your role and you have the capability of making an impact on your organization or profession. Often people underestimate the influence they have and it is worthwhile having a conversation with one of our senior faculty members if you have any concerns. Can I just take the practical skills training without having to do any research? Yes, it is possible to attend the skills training only, however, we would recommend that you consider undertaking some evaluation of your work even when you are not going for any of our awards. I am enrolled in another PDF Faculty, but I think that I would like to take an Applied Trauma Psychology module, can this count to my Masters? Talk to your learning advisor who can help you to integrate the Applied Trauma Psychology scheme into your learning plan for your Master s degree. Why are no fees shown for the practice modules? The practice modules involve two elements, the skills which involve two days of practical training per module, a supported period of research and a research presentation day during which students present their work to their learning advisors and their fellow students. Many organisations arrange and pay for the skills training in-house, this can make the training much cheaper for candidates. The fees for the supported research and the research presentation day are 400 +vat. Frequently Asked Questions 21
