4 Types of Coders Hospital services coders Inpatient coders Outpatient coders Includes ambulatory surgery, clinics, ancillary departments (e.g., lab, pathology, radiology, emergency department) Assign codes for the facility portion of the payment Usually employed by the hospital Per the AHA, there are about 5700 registered hospitals in the U.S. (based on 2011 data)

5 Types of Coders Professional services coders Assign codes for the physician/professional portion of the payment Usually employed by the physician practice, not the hospital But don t forget, hospitals may want to include the physician practices in negotiating education for ICD-10!!! Per the Federation of State Medical Boards, there are approximately 850,000 physicians in the U.S. (based on 2010 data)

26 Educational Content Our educational content is developed as rules-based learning Using recognized source authorities such as the Official Guidelines for ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS Coding Guidelines Modules are created in an intensive learning format to maximize comprehension of complex topics. Traditionally, the modules are arranged with broader concepts and then progressively narrow to more specific ones For example, ICD-10-CM as a system Specific conventions applicable to the whole manual Coding issues specific to the each chapter within the manual.
