2 Medicine courses 2(11) About Studies: Exchange program students may apply for an exchange period at the Faculty of Medicine through the ERASMUS and Nordplus exchange programs. Also medical students from universities with which the University of Helsinki has bilateral agreements, may apply for exchange to the Faculty of Medicine. Exchange students spend one semester or one complete academic year at the Faculty of Medicine. Each year a set of courses are offered in English for the foreign exchange students. All courses consist of clinical teaching in theory and in practice. We apply the problem based learning method (mentoring) and bed-side learning in small groups during the courses. Students may choose courses according to their interest. In addition, it is possible to arrange practical training periods in various clinical subjects during the periods when there is no suitable course instruction available. In addition, topics of clinical pharmacology, radiology, pathology, infectious diseases, clinical microbiology and chemistry are included. During the course the student should learn to relate to a child and his/her family understand the normal physical and psychological development and its variations, allowing recognition and treatment of aberrations to carry out necessary examinations and treatments, and understand the special requirements of children in this respect to master the recognition and treatment of pediatric illnesses that are encountered in primary health care to understand the nature and treatment principles of the most common pediatric diseases that are handled in secondary care to recognize situations in which the child should be sent to secondary health care, and determine the urgency of the referral to give first aid in acute situations Topics: 1. Normal growth and psychomotor development, and aberrations requiring intervention 2. Preventive health care. Care and nutritional needs of the well child, and problems encountered therein 3. Rights of the child, and the role of primary health care in child protection 4. Common pediatric disorders as they relate to the primary care physician in perinatology, pediatric gastroenterology, infectious diseases, respiratory diseases, allergology, cardiology, nephrology, hematology and oncology, endocrinology, rheumatology and genetics 5. Acute pediatrics: first aid. Decision-making in acute pediatrics 6. Pediatric surgery: the symptoms, diagnostics and treatment principles of the most common pediatric surgical problems: musculoskeletal abnormalities general surgical problems (hernias, phimosis, undescended testes etc.) surgical emergencies and situations requiring immediate care surgical problems of the neonate 7. Pediatric neurology: Primary care-level skills and knowledge of normal psychomotor development; neurologic examination of children; pathophysiology and recognition of aberrant development; motor disabilities; language and learning disabilities; epilepsy and febrile seizures; ADHD; neuromuscular disorders; headache; mental retardation; as well as treatment and referral to tertiary care of neurologic patients in primary care

5 Medicine courses 5(11) The aim of the curriculum is; 1. To learn normal growth and development in childhood and to identify deviations; 2. To learn to diagnose and treat the commonest diseases and emergency situations in children and adolescents; 3. To learn treatment options for the commonest problems in paediatric surgery and neurology; 4. To learn communication with children of all ages and with their parents 5. To learn the commonest congenital defects and their prognosis.

In addition, topics of clinical pharmacology, pathology and infectious diseases and clinical chemistry are included. 7 Medicine courses 7(11) Otorhinolaryngology ( ) Professor Anne Pitkäranta Tutorial Nurse: Satu Janhunen, 5th medical year, 218 h Credits: 7,65 ECTS credits (3 weeks) Description: The aims of the course are to: understand anatomy and fysiology involved, prepare for independent patient examination, earn necessary investigational and therapeutic procedures, recognize most common symptoms and etiology and pathofysiology behind them, and to master emergency treatment for ORL problems at a primary care level.

8 Medicine courses 8(11) Dermatology and venereal diseases ( ) Docent Anita Remitz Tutorial Nurse: Eija Ruoppa, 4 th or 5 th medical year, 112 h A 3-week course (4,2 ECTS credits) Small group session with patients 36 h - patient examination - patient slides - topical treatment - surgical training - mole surgery - laser treatment - physiotherapy - venereology - pediatric patients - UV- therapy unit Allergy testing 2 h Occupational diseases 2 h Test slides 4 h Seminars 10h - atopic dermatitis - leg ulcers Lectures 9h Workshops: - skin tumours - skin infections 8 h Independent studies including photomaterial 40 h Preliminary examination 1h Final examination (with patient slides) 2h Mode of Assessment: written examination The small group sessions are both theoretical and practical, were we partly study skin diseases in a problem-based way and also examine real patients. We will use a lot of photomaterial and we have also a lot of photomaterial for independent studies. The students will rehearse how to remove a mole or take a biopsy and they also have a possibility to try it in practise. Some lectures and the seminars will be integrated with the finnish students. We will also study topical treatment in theory and then follow how the treatment is performed in practise. Venereology will be studied in a problem-based way and the students will visit the venereological unit in small groups (2 to 3 students at time) and follow the doctors work. Test slides will be used regulary to exercise the recognition of dermatologic diseases.

9 Medicine courses 9(11) Ophthalmology ( ) Professor Tero Kivelä Tutorial Nurse: 4th medical year, 112 h Credits: 4 ECTS (3 weeks) Workgroups 30 h Seminars (including hybrid lecture) 12 h Guided practice at emergency clinic 12 h Independent study 58 h Seminars: Signs and symptoms in ophthalmology Refractive errors and their correction Strabismus Systemic disorders and the eye Slowly deteriorating vision glaucoma and cataract Emergency ophthalmology Paediatric ophthalmology Neuro-ophthalmology Ocular and adnexal tumours Quickly deteriorating vision Red eye Rehabilitation and low vision aids The workgroups are mainly practical, including introductions to each topic, demonstrations on slides, photos, videos and live patients. Students will rehearse ocular examination techniques by examining each other and applicable patients. One session will include foreign body removal from porcine eyes. Visits to different departments of the Eye Hospital and guided practice at the emergency clinic will give an overview of ophthalmology as a speciality. Students will learn e.g. - how to assess visual acuity and correct simple refractive errors - inspection of the eye with focal light - eversion of the upper lid - remove corneal foreign bodies - ophthalmoscopic examination - technique and important ophthalmoscopic findings - examine eye motility, strabismus, pupillary reflexes, colour vision. - pediatric ophthalmology - measure the eye pressure by Schiötz and icare tonometry - techniques of perimetry. - how to diagnose and treat acute glaucoma. - how to diagnose cataract - the diagnosis and treatment of ocular and orbital infections and when to refer the patient to a specialist - emergency ophthalmology diagnosis and primary care - diabetic retinopathy and ocular findings in other systemic diseases.
