2 BACHELOR S PROGRAMME ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING This English-taught programme focuses on developing and improving electronics-based systems. You will work on high-tech applications, such as robot arms for surgery or sensors for health applications. WHAT IS ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING? The Bachelor s programme in Electrical Engineering will equip you with knowledge and skills that are essential in almost all areas of technology (electronics, data storage, communication, antennas, user interfaces, energy storage, sensors, control, signal conditioning, robotics and optics). Electrical engineers are highly employable, largely because their training encompasses a branch of science rather than a specific profession. Whatever career path you decide on, as an electrical engineer you will invent your own future. SOME EXAMPLES OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING HEALTHCARE Robotic arms that can perform appendix surgery or replace an amputated limb; Monitoring and control systems for helping sick or disabled people; Smart pills that incorporate various laboratory functions in a single chip and travel through the body measuring values to help diagnose a patient (lab-on-a-chip). TELECOMMUNICATION Development of an automatic pilot for drones, so that they no longer have to be controlled from the ground; Radio of the future: modular audio platform; Innovative and unique beamforming system that can be applied in smart antenna arrays for satellite communication or high-speed vehicles. SAFETY & SUSTAIBILITY Car-to-car communication via sensors that can automatically adjust the speed of each vehicle; Small robots that can predict tornados; Devices for converting chemical energy into electric energy; A smart operating system that tells you whether you should use the electrical engine in your hybrid car or the fuel engine; Face, behaviour and situation recognition for making public spaces safer; More energy-efficient chips, so that mobile devices no longer need frequent recharging. 4 STUDY PROGRAMME BSC ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING The Bachelor s in Electrical Engineering is a three-year programme. Each year consists of four modules of ten weeks, in which you will study a problem in a project team with other students. All subjects within the project are interrelated, and you will be challenged to look for practical solutions. YEAR 1: You will encounter disciplines such as Mathematics, Physics, Information Technology, Electronics, Signals & Systems and Electromagnetism. Throughout the four modules you will gain an insight into the various professional roles and themes in your future field of interest, and learn how to develop practical solutions to complex problems. YEAR 2: Subjects include Computer Systems, Mechatronics, Network Systems, Device Physics, Signal Processing and Communications. YEAR 3: You will deepen your knowledge by taking electives. These involve technical and non-technical subjects and the chance to study abroad. The final step towards your Bachelor of Science degree is the completion of your Bachelor s assignment. RIGHT FOR YOU? If you want to study Electrical Engineering, you need to have a keen interest in electronics and electromagnetic waves, a desire to understand the fundamentals and practical applications of physics, and the ambition to develop your powers of abstract reasoning. Some examples of challenging tasks you might work on during your studies: Developing sensors to find out more about certain parameters; Developing smarter antennas; Developing and designing a mechatronic system; Making efficient use of solar cells; Designing chips; Understanding how to transmit radio waves and convert them into electricity; Representing information as a signal to allow transmission, reception and processing. 5 AFTER THE BACHELOR ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING After graduating de bachelor s programme most of our students go on to study at Master s level but others go straight into the job market. Electrical Engineering is one of the best programmes you can take in terms of the excellent job opportunities it provides. The University of Twente offers a range of two years Master s programmes that follow on from the Bachelor s programme in Electrical Engineering, for example: Electrical Engineering Systems & Control (Mechanical Engineering, Robotics) Embedded Systems (Information Technology) Nanotechnology (Chemistry, Physics) Biomedical Engineering Electrical engineers are highly employable, largely because their training is not limited to a specific profession but encompasses a branch of science. You will become an innovator: a developer of new methods and techniques. You could choose to work as a systems designer, researcher or project manager for a multinational (e.g. ASML, NXP, Philips, Thales) or you could opt for a career at an R&D lab or semi-public organization (e.g. TNO, ASTRON, a university hospital). Some graduates prefer to work for a smaller company (e.g. Nedap, Aemics, Sensata), a patent agency or a software company, or to pursue a career in engineering consultancy or teaching. If you succeed in coming up with your own unique electronics-based concept, it may even be time to start your own business! You can use all your knowledge to develop fun applications.
