1 Introduction to the Text of Galatians The following text is based on a very simple premise: That the reading attested by the most independent witnesses is likely to be best. The use of the word independent is significant. The witnesses I follow are text-types, not individual manuscripts. In Galatians, and in Paul as a whole, there appear to be five text-types, which I denote by the symbols A, K, O, P, W. A is the well-known Alexandrian text. K is the equally well-known Byzantine text. W is the similarly familiar Western text. The other two are not so widely acknowledged. P is, approximately, Zuntz s proto- Alexandrian text; it has only three witnesses, P 46, B, and the Sahidic Coptic. O is the text associated most especially with 1739, but also found (in weaker form) in 1881, 6, 424 c, and, very weakly indeed in this book, in the near-sisters 630 and It is similar to, but not identical with, the text of Origen. Of these types, A, O, and P have very great value. W, while old, is somewhat less reliable. K appears to be secondary and has little textual significance but has had great influence; almost all manuscripts have at least some K mixture. One of the crucial tasks of the critic is always to determine whether the reading of a mixed manuscript, if it agrees with K, derives from the non-k ancestor or is the result of correction toward K. There are at least two other textual groups with some independent value, though both have been heavily influenced by K. These are family 1611 ( hark) and family 330 ( ). There is also the group , usually called family 1319; this may be associated with the Armenian. In Paul, however, it seems closest to the Alexandrian group, and is cited alongside that group under the siglum h. The procedure for determining the reading of each group varies. Where P 46 and B differ, we simply cannot list a reading for P is usually an adequate representative of O, but if it is Byzantine, we must look also to 1881, 6, and 424 c. W must be determined by looking at D, F+G, and the Old Latins. A is the hardest of the types to determine, because it is the largest; as a result, I sometimes cite different portions of it as A pt. K and (very rarely) W will sometimes also be cited in part. If I cite A pt in support of two readings, it means that both have substantial Alexandrian support; if I cite it for only one reading, it means that I suspect that that particular reading is the Alexandrian reading, but several manuscripts defect. Once the text-types are known, the reading found in the majority of the four valuable types (A O P W) is followed. If there are three readings attested by these types, or if we have two types against two, internal evidence may have to decide, though in general it is assumed that A O P have greater value than W. In cases where the majority of text-types is not decisive, the principle of parsimony is employed. This is a stemmatic application: We ask which reading gives rise to the others by the minimum number of steps. An example of this is 5:17. The adopted reading, α αν, has very poor support (almost nothing except the Byzantine text). However, no other reading is supported by more than one text-type. And every one of the other readings can be derived from the adopted reading α αν by a single change (no more than one word, with a change of no more than two letters). If any other reading is adopted as original, we are forced to allow for at least one two-step change. So the reading α αν is adopted despite its very poor support. The text which follows includes a partial critical apparatus. Every reading where my text disagrees with the United Bible Societies text, or with the text of Westcott and Hort, is shown, and these two editions are cited in the apparatus. The apparatus includes only those variants which meet this criterion are shown, even though there are other readings where I consider the text to be highly uncertain (an example of the latter is 4:25). In cases where this text disagrees with UBS, I have given a full citation of the relevant manuscripts and text-types. In addition, places where the text diverges from UBS are shown in bold type. There are about two dozen such points of divergence. Because Westcott-Hort sometimes adopted readings with very slight support, I have sometimes cited simply the manuscripts supporting their preferred variant, and cited rell for the other variant. rell can be assumed to include all the manuscripts cited consistently and the overwhelming majority of manuscripts not so cited. The margin also shows all places where the Hodges & Farstad text disagrees with my text. However, if HF disagrees with my text but UBS and WH agree with it, manuscripts are not cited; the two readings are merely shown. (These minor variants have verse numbers shown in blue type to make it clear they are of lesser importance.) Variants in the HF apparatus are also shown, unless they involve instances where the Textus Receptus disagrees with the full Byzantine majority (that is, when TR is the only supporter HF show for their marginal variant). These are not shown. 1

2 Example: Here is the first variant reading in Galatians. 1:3 και κυριου ηµων (P O W K): P 46 B sa, , D F G am bam cav gran val, P 51 H, K L (WH marg [ηµων]) HF; ηµων και κυριου (A+h): ℵ A , a b ful leg reg sanger, 330 P supp , Ψ , UBS WH txt ; και κυριου: 1319, This means that the reading adopted in this text is και κυριου ηµων, which is supported by four text-types: P (as represented by the Greek witnesses P 46 B and the Sahidic Coptic), O (as represented by ), W (as represented by the Greek witnesses D F G and the vulgate witnesses am bam cav gran val), and by the Byzantine witnesses K L It also has the support of the mixed witnesses P 51 H. This is also the reading of Westcott and Hort s margin, though with ηµων in square brackets, and of Hodges & Farstad. The primary alternative ηµων και κυριου is supported by the Alexandrian text A and its ally h, as represented by ℵ A It also has support from some W witnesses, the Latins a b ful leg reg sanger; by the mixed witnesses 330 P supp , and by the Byzantine witnesses Ψ It is also the text of the United Bible Societies edition and the text (but not the margin) of Westcott and Hort. A third reading, και κυριου, has the support of Textual Groupings Table of Symbols A Alexandrian Text: ℵ, A, C, I, 33 (81, 1175, bo listed in this group but generally not used to determine group reading) h family 1319 (weakly Alexandrian): 256, 263, 365, 1319, 2127 K Byzantine (koine) text: K, L, Ψ, 049, 056, 0142, 223 (K c ),1960 (K r ) O Family 1739: 1739, 1881, 424 c, 6 ( weak members listed in this group but generally not used to determine group reading) In general, O will be cited where 1739 and any one of its allies agree. If 1739 is non-byzantine and all other witnesses of the type are Byzantine, I may cite O based on 1739 alone P P 46 /B/sahidic type (Zuntz s proto-alexandrian): P 46 B sa (N.B.: Since this group is so small, the symbol is only used where P 46 and B agree) W Western: D, F, G, old Latin [except r],vulgate in part Note: Textual groupings are listed only to clarify which readings are adopted. The individual manuscripts are also listed, in group order, insofar as they are known to me. 2
