Philosophies and Objectives The program objectives are : 4.1 To provide advance knowledge in Biotechnology as well as posses high potential to study Biotechnology in higher level for students. 4.2 To encourage research skills for students by carrying out qualified researches in Biotechnology and relevant fields. 4.3 To accomplish collaborations of academicians in various areas which leads to academic development. 5. Effective Academic Year Academic year Applicants Qualifications 6.1 The applicants must hold at least a Bachelor s degree in one of the following branches : Bachelor of Science : Bachelor of Engineering (chemical engineering) 7. Admission Requirements 7.1 Applicants must meet all requirements of Thammasat University s Regulations for Graduate Studies B.E Academic System 8.1 The program operates on the regular academic system with 2 semesters. 8.2 Students in this program are required to take the coursework at least 41 credits (11 credits of required courses, at least 15 credits of elective courses and 12 credits for Thesis) and passed comprehensive examination. 8.3 Comprehensive and Thesis Examination Students would take credits for thesis after registered required courses and elective courses at least 15 credits, having a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.00 and pass comprehensive exam already. The process of preparing the thesis and thesis examination, students must follow Thammasat Univesity s Regulations concerning thesis writing and the Regulations for Graduate Studies. 8.4 Foreign language. Student must receive a grade of P for foreign language examination prior to taking the Thesis defense, or TU-GET at least 550 scores. 9. Period of Study Degree must be completed in a period of not more than 8 semesters from the students initial registration in the Master of Science Program.

2 10. Registration Students are allowed to register at least 6 credits but not more than 12 credits per semesters. 11. Academic Performance Evaluation and Graduation 11.1 Grading System Academic Performance is evaluated as follows : Grade A A- B+ B B- C+ C D F Grade Point The number of credits that can be counted toward the degree must be based on the courses for which students receive a grade of S or at least C A thesis is evaluated by the grades S (Satisfactory) or U (Unsatisfactory) The foreign examination and comprehension examination are graded P for pass and N for failure without grade point Graduation Requirments for a student to graduate from the program student must have passed all required coursework with the total number of credits of not less than that specified in the curriculum and a cumulative grade-point average of not less than student must have received S for the thesis student must have received P for comprehensive examination and foreign examination The thesis research output must be published in scientific journals or in proceeding of scientific conference. 12. 3 14. Venue and Facilities Lecture and laboratory practices are mainly conducted at Department of Biotechnology, Faculty of Science and Technology, Thammasat University. Other academic and research institute in related areas are also used for practical training and conducting research projects. 15. Library Books, Articles and Research journal and online databases are provided by Thammasat s Rangsit campus. 16. Budget This program is self-supporting. Tuition and fees are approximately 150,000 bahts per year. 17. Public aspects and legal concerning with the biotechnology research and application will be discussed. BT680 Research Methodology and Experimental Design The course covers research methods and experimental designs in science. Topics include the problem identifications, hypothesis formulations, experimental designs, data analyses by statistical package programs, result interpretations, and report writings. BT690 Selected Research Techniques and Instrumentations The course covers principles and current techniques in advance research areas, e.g. biochemical engineering, fermentation technology, industrial microbiology. Theory and instruction in the operation of modern instruments in biotechnological research are also included. BT691 Seminar in Biotechnology 1 1 Credit Students present a seminar with critical presentation and discussion of original research papers in biotechnology. BT791 Seminar in Biotechnology 2 1 Credit Students present a seminar with critical presentation and discussion of original research papers in biotechnology. Elective Courses Courses in Botany BT626 Plant Molecular Biology Topics include the organization of genetic materials and gene expression in nucleus, chloroplast and mitochondrial, molecular biology of seed development, male sterility, growth hormones, photosynthesis, nitrogen fixation, molecular mechanisms of plant responding to biotic and abiotic stresses. Genetic engineering of plant and current status of research in this area are discussed. BT627 Plant Mineral Nutrition and Transportation Topics include physiological, biochemical and their biophysical processes by which plants absorb mineral nutrients from the soil, translocate the nutrients through the plant, and utilize the nutrients for growth and development. These will include the uptake, translocation and compartmentation of mineral elements, root-soil interactions, metabolism of mineral nutrients, involvement of mineral nutrient in various physiological processes as well as plant responses to abiotic stresses.

6 BT628 Mechanisms of Plant Functions and Applications This course is emphasized on studying various plant functions such as mechanism of plant disease resistance, physiological aspects on plant adaptation to environmental factors. The possibilities of their applications in agriculture and other fields are also included BT629 Utilization of Plant Tissue Cultures The course is emphasized on utilization of plant tissue culture in various aspects. The method of plant tissue culture to produce secondary metabolites and the utilization secondary metabolites are included. File study is also required. Courses in Microbiology BT606 Microbial and Plant Interactions The course encompasses the study on many complex and varied inter-relationship between microbe and plant such as symbiosis. The inter-relationship between microbe and plant is emphasized on aspects of physiological growth and morphological development, biochemistry and metabolism, mechanism of microbe invasion on their plant hosts as a habitat and substrates as well as their genetics which control there activities. The study integrates presentation of all above aspects together. The study is not treated them as separated and distinct disciplines. Furthermore the newest theories about this course are discussed. BT607 Virology Topics include molecular biology of viruses, viral infection and pathogenesis, medical viral diseases, zoonotic viral diseases, plant viral diseases and applications of advanced biotechnology in medical, veterinary and plant virology. Field studies or field practices are required. BT608 Bacteriology Topics emphasize on molecular biology of bacteria, morphology and physiology of bacteria, metabolic consequences of bacterial infection in humans, animals and plants, and application of advanced technology in bacteriology. Field studies or field practices are required. BT609 Yeast and Yeast Technology Topics emphasize on biology of yeast, morphology, physiology, classification and identification, preservation of yeast strain, genetics and genetic manipulation, yeast products, fermentation technology, kinetic of fermentation and industrial application. Factory visit is also included. BT656 Biodegradation and Biodeterioration The principle and mechanism of substance biodegradation and biodeterioration are provided. The course covers factors affecting on biodegradation and biodeterioration rate, biodegradation of hydrocarbon, lignin, cellulose, insecticide, herbicide and spoilage and disadvantage of biodegradation and biodeterioration process. BT706 Yeast Genetics Topics include chromosomes and genetic materials of yeast, genetic regulation of mating type and homothallism, gene expression and regulation, genetic mapping, genetic regulation by multiple gene, meiotic and mitotic recombination, cytoplasmic phenotypic genetic material, genetic manipulation by mutation, mating protoplast fusion and genetic engineering. BT707 Microbial lipid The concept of the course describes microbial lipid biosynthesis and utilize them as an alternative lipid sources. The course covers general lipid characteristics, lipid classification and their nomenclature and systematic naming, microbial lipid source, classification of microbe based on their lipid content, lipid organelle and cell structure, microbial lipid biosynthetic pathways, characteristics of enzymes and their genes in relation to lipid biosynthetic pathways and physiological and genetic engineering modern approaches used in improving quantity and quality of microbial lipid.

7 BT708 Advanced Microbial Physiology Molecular and cellular aspects of microorganisms: growth and its control, membrane and cell envelope structure and function, antibiotic action, adaptations to extreme environments and the current research interest. Lecture. Prerequisites: BT 201 and 301 BT748 Bacterial Genetics Gene, gene expression and regulation, plasmid, bacteriophage, relationship between bacteria and environment at a molecular level, post-genomic era, bacterial molecular techniques and their applications. Courses in Bioprocess Engineering BT636 Bioprocess Engineering Study of fundamental engineering calculation (e.g. unit and dimension) including an application of material and energy balance in bioprocessing. This course also provides the knowledge of transport phenomena used in biological process aspects such as momentum transfer (fluid flow and mixing), heat transfer and mass transfer. Study of fermentation kinetics in relation to bioreactor design is also included. The final part to be contained in this topic is the application of unit operations theory for the most efficient use. BT637 Biochemical Reactors and Designs This course provides the contents in various types of fermentation using agitated fermentor and the design of agitated and air-lift fermenters. Sterilization, effect of shear, and mass and heat transfer in the bioreactor are also included. This course further provides the topics in fermentation scale-up, instrumentation and fermentation control, fermentation development, and biochemical reaction engineering where metabolic modeling is included. BT638 Bioprocess Management This course provides an overview of the development process, principles of the development process and R&D projects management. The topic of intellectual property management is also included. This knowledge will be used to speed up an achievement of bioprocess development which case studies are also provided. BT639 Immobilized Bio-catalysts Topics include methods and factors of cells and enzyme immobilization. Industrial applications are also discussed BT736 Advanced Bioprocess Engineering This course provides the fundamental of bioprocess design with emphasize on bioseparation proceses. The student will be able to apply the concepts of bioprocess engineering in commercial process case studies, for instance, the production of macro-molecule and micro-molecule such as single-cell protein and antibiotic production, respectively. In addition, topics in process economics (costing and project evaluation), flow-sheeting, and safety and loss prevention are also included. Factory visit is also included. BT737 Bioprocess Validation This course provides the guideline in validating every steps of each biological process. These steps will range from sterilization process to the manufacturing of bioproducts including biopharmaceutical products in an industrial scale. Courses in Independent study BT616 Animal Cell and Tissue Culture Topics include technology of animal cell and tissue culture equipment and solution preparation for cell culture, preparation of primary, secondary and continuous cell culture of invertebrate and vertebrate cells. Field studies or field practices are required

8 BT646 Molecular cell Biology Topics cover major areas in cell biology including cell theory, structure and function of organelles, chemistry and biochemistry of cell for example, the role of enzyme as a biological catalyze, cell metabolism, regulation and signaling and etc, various techniques used in studying cell biology, mechanisms of DNA replication, mutation and repair, recombination, transposable genetic elements, prokaryotic and eukaryotic gene expression and regulation at multiple steps. BT647 Technologies for Genome Analysis This course is designed to discussion technologies in genome analysis, including fundamental genetics, cytogenetics, molecular genetic techniques, molecular markers, sequencing and sequence analysis. The course also includes laboratory practice in relevant areas BT648 Bioinformatics The course generally concerns the introduction of computer hardware and software as a tool for genetic data analysis and their applications. Initially the course enables students to explore an overview of computer operating system and software used in this subject area. Then, the course is emphasized on how to use various commands in some particular computer software to analyze genetic data such as a group command in data searching and management, creating, editing and converting a file into GCG format, analysis of DNA and peptide sequence and group command in predicting 2D and 3D structure of peptide and etc. The software for creating a plasmid map is also included. BT649 Techniques in Molecular Biology The course is emphasized on studying various gene recombination techniques including isolation of gene, analysis of gene structure and gene expression and its detection for example, construction of gene library, southern, northern, western blotting. Advance techniques of gene transformation in prokaryotes and eukaryotes are also included. BT657 Molecular Biology and Applications The course is designed to provide students with a background of biological heredity and variation, the processes by which genetic information is stored, replicated, and expressed in living organisms, the examination of gene regulation, signal transduction, repair, and mutagenesis. The course also includes techniques employed in molecular cloning and applications, genomes and genome mapping. BT666 Molecular and Cellular Immunobiology The course is emphasized on immune system at cellular and molecular levels. Fundamental theory and application of immunochemistry, immunogenetics, vaccine preparation and laboratory diagnosis are also provided. These diagnostic techniques include enzyme immunoassay (EIA); practical assay performance for protein, glycoprotein, hormone, etc.; techniques for enzyme labeled, radioactive substance labeled, fluorescence labeled; production and assessment of antisera; laboratory management in immunoassay; quality control in immunoassay. Moreover, immunobiology applications in biotechnology and field study are also required. BT676 Peptide and Protein Technology The course is emphasized on laboratory and industrial scale productions of enzymes, peptide hormones, antibodies including monoclonal antibodies and other commercially useful proteins; regulation of synthesis; recovery and down-stream processing techniques. Applications of proteins and enzymes in medical therapy and diagnosis, and as analytical tools including ELISA, biosensor and affinity chromatography will also be covered. BT686 Biodiversity and Evolution Topics focus on biodiversity and evolution of plants, animals, microorganisms, situation and destruction problems of bioresource in Thailand. These will include the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity by appropriate technology. The application of molecular techniques for biodiversity analysis will be covered. Field studies are required.

9 BT687 Law and Ethics in Biotechnology Topics focused on individual and organizational responsibility in biotechnological research, developmental and commercial contexts. Issues to be discussed from legal and ethical perspectives include property lights, privacy and discrimination, the federal regulatory role, safe-regulatory safeguards, liability implication for individual/organizational behavior, and policy responses to societal concern in abroad and Thailand. Material will be present cases involving gene therapy, cloning, and biomaterials in the medical and health sector, and farming and crop modification in the agricultural sector. BT689 Impacts of Transgenic Organisms on Environments Topics include sources of transgenic organisms in the environments, adverse impacts of transgenic organisms on human healths and other organisms, impacts of transgenic flows to native plants and weeds and other unknown risks. Public concerns and government regulations on impacts from transgenic organisms are also discussed. BT696 Selected Topics in Biotechnology 1 Credit This course is designed to introduce students to the critical reading of current scientific literature focusing on a particular area of biotechnological research. The format usually includes presentation of research papers by the students and intensive discussion of the methodology and conclusions of the papers. BT747 Gene Technology The topics covered in this course emphasize the experimental techniques of gene technology, together with some concepts in molecular biology, and examples of these methods. These will include: structure and synthesis of nucleic acids and proteins; gene regulation; cdna and genomic cloning; a variety of host-vector systems; polymerase chain reaction; molecular markers and genome analysis; gene isolation strategies; in vitro mutagenesis ; genomics and post genomics; engineering plants and animals. BT779 Protein Engineering This course covers the principle of protein engineering, methods for designing protein structures by genetic engineering and chemical engineering techniques, applications of engineered proteins in medicine, industry and other purposes. Thesis BT800 Thesis 12 Student conducts research in biotechnological areas and writing up thesis under supervision of advisor. 18. Quality Assurance According to the code of Thammasat University, Biotechnology department has already set the quality assurance system, where its activities are as followed: 18.1 To establish a departmental academic committee to monitor an academic activity and to maintain that quality at a required level Faculty permanent committee will monitor and approve the role and activity of the committee mentioned in The program of study has been organized under the code of conduct announced by the Commission on Higher Education and Thammasat University Council For high quality of education, Biotechnology department will select the people with appropriate background and experience to do lecture or demonstrate all courses provided Both students and lecturers will be evaluated every semester, the results of their evaluation will be used as a guide for improving academic quality. 19.
