COTS vs Open Source Web Hosting: Which One is Right for You? COTS vs. OSS/FS vs. SaaS COTS Commercially available Off The Shelf OSS/FS Open Source Software/Free Software SaaS Software as a Service
COTS COTS (commercial off the shelf) describes ready made d products that t can easily be obtained. See also: COTS, MOTS, GOTS, and NOTS. Source OSS/FS The Definition states that open source software must be distributed ib t d without t royalty, that t the distributor must make the source code for the software freely available, and the derivative works from the code must also be released as open source. Source
SaaS Software as a service (SaaS, typically pronounced [sæs]), sometimes referred to as "on demand software, is a software delivery model in which software and its associated data are hosted centrally (typically in the (Internet) cloud) and are typically accessed by users using a thin client, normally using a web browser over the Internet. Source
Decision Tree Which do you choose? COTS OSS/FS SaaS Self Self Managers Decision Makers Mayors Commissioners Executive Teams Developers Decision Makers GIS Managers and Coordinators
vs. Self Hosting : is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations i to make their own website accessible via the World Wide Web. Source: Self : a type of Internet hosting where the individual or organization purchase, maintain i and serve to make their information i available via the World Wide Web. Decision Tree Which do you choose? COTS OSS/FS SaaS Self Self
Does GIS Online Have to be Expensive? It depends Data Functional requirements Scalability Hardware Expertise Compatibility 2011 If money were no object ESRI ArcGIS Desktop (ArcInfo) Server (Enterprise Advanced) Hardware Servers, workstations, GPS collectors, ipads Infrastructure Staff Technicians, programmers Designers, cartographers 2011
OSS/FS GIS There s a lot of it out there GRASS GIS Free and open source Developed by US Army Corp of Engineers Project began in 1982 Quantum GIS Free and open source (OSGF) Can be used standalone or as front end GUI for GRASS Project began in 2002 GDAL/OGR OpenLayers 2011 Is online mapping only about the map?
Decision Tree Which do you choose? COTS OSS/FS SaaS Self Self Data GIS Data GIS Data GIS Data GIS Data GIS Panel Discussion
Lightweight GIS Free GIS Tools for Desktop, Mobile, and dthe Web What if I just want to make and use meaningful maps? Much of it can be done for free! 2011
Why doesn t everyone use them? Steep learning curve Prevalence of proprietary data formats Most still require large hardware, infrastructure, and staffing, and production expenditures 2011 But when the hard work is done (or being done by someone else) Plenty of free options available for consuming data: Google Earth/Maps ArcGIS Explorer ArcGIS Online Quantum GIS Bing Open Street Maps MapBox 2011
Where to get them ArcGIS Explorer Desktop wnload.html ArcGIS Explorer Online Google Earth COTS: Pros vs. Cons Pros: Shared development costs Support Maintenance cost Cons: Proprietary software designed for mass consumption Custom features more difficult to implement.
OSS/FS: Pros vs. Cons Pros: No out of pocket expense for software. Continuous development at no cost. World wide Community Support Cons: Dependant on wide range of developer network. Support and Security require additional consideration/costs. Custom development investment given back. Pros: SaaS: Pros vs. Cons Relationship based Provider responsible for the maintenance, hosting and development costs Cons: Adding custom features is more dependent on the solution provider.
Cosmo Quiz: Review Quiz Answer 0 9 Your organization is likely looking at implementing a COTS solution because it is a short term commitment with the smallest financial i up front costs You are a techy group of people in your organization and are likely looking at OSS/FS. Techy staff likes to tinker and use new technologies. 20+ Your organization is likely considering a SaaS solution because it is a cost effective solution and the best fit for the overall organizations goals.
