2 A sneak peek at the lineup of presentations for the day TEACHING AND LEARNING Grow and Learn: Keys to Promoting School Readiness Jodi Wall, Jackie Brock and Tamara Shoup Research clearly demonstrates the positive impact on school readiness when key stakeholders work together to support young children s growth and development. Come learn about the Early Learning and Development Benchmarks and how these guidelines can be used to support curriculum in early learning programs and enhance children s opportunities to enter school ready to learn. Participants will also learn about local efforts to support children and families in their transition to school, including key strategies and activities that are research based, effective and collaborative. Best Practices in Teaching Reading and More Presented by Lani Gordon, Literacy Specialist Understanding and implementing the components and principles of scientifically-based reading instruction form the foundation for high student achievement. Whether teaching basic reading in the primary grades, providing intervention instruction for older struggling students, or extending effective reading strategies across the K-12 curriculum, ESD 112 provides in-service and training options in effective literacy practices for certificated and classified staff. Learn about options for onsite events as well as availability of classes offered at the ESD Conference Center. This session will also provide an overview of additional support offered by ESD 112 such as textbook adoption processes, paraeducator training, online courses, and more. Math: Relieving the Tensions Presented by Bill Kring and Sue Bluestein Mathematics is a vital skill for students to be successful in this competetive world. Improving student performance in mathematics has been the subject of many debates and is the source of tension for many teachers, particularly at the elementary school level. Come learn about strategies to relieve the tension, improve student achievement, and put the fun back in math. Research-Based Approaches in Science Presented by Mark Watrin and Gloria Ferguson Advances in brain research over the past ten years have clear implications for how students learn best, and the role that scientific inquiry has in improving student performance across many disciplines. Come learn about research-based instructional materials as well as successful strategies for teaching science at all levels.
3 Service Opportunities for Schools and High School Seniors Presented by Erika Johnson, Ernie Guerrero and Jim Wells ESD 112 s program, Northwest Service Academy (NWSA), has been helping young people for 15 years by providing environmental education and service learning opportunities. Learn about ways that the NWSA can provide services in and for your school, and how high school seniors can earn an education award for future schooling at accredited institutions, while gaining valuable job skills. Special Education Services for Private Schools Presented by Ann Hutchison, Special Education Cooperative Director This session will provide an overview of how private school students that have suspected disabilities are identified and evaluated for special education. Additionally, we will cover the options for providing specially-designed services for which the eligible students are entitled. Finally, additional services that are available to private schools on a fee-for-service basis will also be described. INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY Streaming Video and Online Databases at Your Fingertips! Presented by Tracey Vukovich, Media Coordinator Streaming video and online databases open up a world of possibilities for students with the click of a mouse. Attend this session and learn how these resources can enable you to engage students, enrich lessons and help students excel academically. The Document Camera: The Most Sustainable Classroom Technology Presented by Debbie Tschirgi, Educational Technology Director Teachers and decision-makers are embracing document cameras as a standard piece of classroom technology. At the heart of their popularity is sustainability, a key factor in identifying quality technology solutions for learning environments. Come learn more about sustainable technology, and see examples of how document cameras can be used for teaching and learning. Using Interactive Tools for Teaching and Learning Presented by Debbie Tschirgi, Educational Technology Director Technology tools such as interactive whiteboards and clickers engage students in highly visual lessons that allow them to participate in their own learning experience in a whole new way. Come see examples of some ways that these tools promote learning, and then learn about purchasing the tools through a contract, and the professional development that is available.
4 Web 2.0 Tools for the Classroom Presented by Tanna Colwell, Technology & Learning Coordinator Web 2.0 provides opportunities for research, writing, collaboration, reflection, self-assessment, and other classroom learning activities. Come see demonstrations of how these new online applications are changing classrooms, and learn how your staff can get professional development on their instructional uses. SAFE SCHOOLS Bullying Prevention Presented by Jan Kennell We all remember the "bully" from our childhood years. As adults we all know how bullying behavior impacts our efforts to create safe and caring learning environments in our schools.
