Educational aims of the programme March 2015 The educational rationale of MBus is to enable high-performing students to extend their studies within the specialisms chosen as part of the BSc programmes and pathways to the fourth, Masters year of study and research, and thus add both depth and value to their higher education at the University of Surrey that would not be easily achievable by undertaking a separate Masters degree due to such stand-alone degrees often acting as conversion courses into equivalent specialisms. By contrast, the MBus programme offers the following advantages: Advanced study within chosen specialism building directly on what students have learnt in Levels 4, 5 and 6 (as well as P for those who have undertaken placements) as part of a student-centred, research-led programme Being part of a small, select cohort of high-performing students starting with similar specialist

2 knowledge base from the BSc part of the programme, enabling more tailored learning Opportunity to reflect on the learning the students have received at BSc level and apply it to a research situation Graduating with a Masters qualification ahead of those who are studying for a standalone Masters qualification, which will give students a head start against their competitors in the job market The MBus programme also has the following additional educational strengths: Customisation via option choices to the students own interests and aspirations within and beyond chosen subject specialisms; Comprising a substantial piece of applied research (via the Applied Research Project component) under the supervision of expert academics in students chosen field; Fostering students initiative and ownership of own learning in relation to advanced tasks, such as for example working as part of a group to organise a networking and knowledge transfer event (as part of the Networking and Knowledge Transfer module). Giving students access to cutting-edge ideas, theories and practices through experts from both within and outside Surrey Business School, including industry experts. Graduates of the programme will provide a strong contribution to the emerging cadre of inquisitive, critical and thinking managers and organisational citizens who are able to meld theory and its application in the real world and therefore are likely to be highly attractive to future employers as the strategic leaders and senior business managers of the future. Graduates will also be ideally placed to undertake research degrees building on their chosen specialisms and, in the future, join the ranks of the academic profession. The aims of the BSc Business Management degree are to: Be truly international Be grounded in an ethos of sustainability Develop individuals who are recognised as professionals in their field Reflect current industry practice and research themes Provide a professional, creative, dynamic and supportive learning environment Recognise the role of the wider university in supporting the development of the individual Be distinctive yet integrated and can be tailored to specialist interest Produce employable individuals who reflect the characteristics of the 'Surrey Management Graduate' 19. Programme structure including the route / pathway / field requirements, levels modules, credits, awards and further information on the mode of study. Students are initially registered for MBus and will undertake 8 compulsory modules in level 4. The MBus programme is studied over 4 or 5 academic years depending on students taking the placement year, and is studied on a full-time basis. On successful completion of the MBus programme students may apply for a PhD. The Programme is divided into modules. All taught modules are worth 15 credits, which is indicative

8 of 150 hours of learning, comprised of student contact, private study and assessment. The only exception is the Applied Research Project at FHEQ Level 7, which allows students to undertake a substantial independent research project into their chosen specialism, and is worth 45 credits. In order to achieve the MBus award students must complete 480 credits at FHEQ Levels 4, 5, 6 and 7. To achieve the BSc award students must complete 360 credits at FHEQ Levels 4, 5 and 6. To achieve the Ordinary degree award students must complete 300 credits, including 60 credits at level 6 To achieve the DipHE award students must complete 240 credits at FHEQ Levels 4 and 5. To achieve the CertHE award students must complete 120 credits at FHEQ Level 4. The optional placement year requires 120 credits on successful completion. Remaining on the MBus is contingent on a level average of 60% at FHEQ levels 5, and cumulative level average for FHEQ Levels 5 and 6 at Level 6. Students failing to meet this criterion at the end of Level 5 will be transferred out to the BSc programme. Those failing to meet it at the end of Level 6 will be recommended for the award of BSc. Students who enrol on the BSc programme may be admitted to the MBus programme at the end of FHEQ levels 5 or 6 if they meet the level average criterion. The first three years of the MBus programme comprise the structure of the BSc Business Management programme. This means that the MBus Business Management programme and its pathways (MBus Business Management (Entrepreneurship), MBus Business Management (HRM), MBus Business Management (Marketing)) start with a common first year. As is currently the case with the BSc Business Management programme, this will allow MBus students to make an informed decision about either confirming the pathway chosen on entry or switching to an alternative pathway at the end of Level 4. Some of the modules at FHEQ Level 4 constitute part of the appropriate pathway. The exit award at the end of FHEQ Level 4 is CertHE. At FHEQ Level 5, students take 45 credits of common modules, with the exception of Marketing pathway, where students take 30 credits with common with other pathways. Additionally, Marketing students take 45 credits of pathway modules and 45 credits of optional modules taken from other pathways and specialist options. Students from other pathways take 45 credits of pathway modules and 30 credits of optional modules taken from other pathways and other specialist options. Any students leaving with a subsidiary award at either FHEQ Level 4 or 5 would not include the pathway in the title. The exit award at the end of FHEQ Level 5 is DipHE. The Professional Training Year, if selected, would be taken within the chosen pathway. At FHEQ Level 6, students take 60 credits of common modules. Students on the generic Business Management pathway also take 60 credits of optional modules, whereas students on specialised pathways take 45 credits of pathway modules and a 15-credit optional module. If students exit at the end of FHEQ Level 6 they will have 360 credits. The exit award at the end of FHEQ Level 6 is BSc. At FHEQ Level 7 in semester one, students take two common modules - Research Methods (an existing module) and Networking and Knowledge Transfer (for MBus students only), followed in semester two by two more modules for MBus students only - Applied Research Methods and the 45 credit Applied Research Project. Students also take 30 credits of optional modules, however for students on specialised pathways at least 15-credits of optional modules have to be in their pathway specialism. Students exiting at the end of FHEQ Level 7 will have achieved 480 credits. Students successfully completing FHEQ Level 7 will be awarded MBus in their chosen pathway. Programme adjustments (if applicable) N/A

9 Programme pathways and variants Students have the option to study BM generally or to choose from one of the four pathways as outlined below. FHEQ Level 4 consists of specially designed compulsory modules that are common to all pathways. After successful completion of FHEQ Level 4, students will have option to continue on the general BM programme or to transfer to one of the pathways. Students will make their selection at the end of FHEQ Level 4 and pathways will start at FHEQ Level 5. Students will not be able to transfer between pathways after FHEQ Level 5 but will be allowed to return to the general BM programme. Students will be made aware of all options at FHEQ Level 4 and will be supported in making their pathway decisions by Programme Leaders and Personal Tutors. BM General Programme The Business Management General programme has been designed to give students the broadest range of subjects. Students who do not wish to take a pathway can remain on this programme and tailor it to their individual interests. The programme covers all important areas of business management including; marketing, HRM, strategy, finance and accounting, management information system, entrepreneurship and ethics. In comparison to the pathways the general BM programme offers more optional modules to students. BM (Marketing) pathway The Business Management (Marketing) pathway has been specifically designed to offer an exciting and challenging programme for students wishing to pursue a career in Marketing and related areas. Students have the option to study a diverse range of topics that reflect both the very latest academic research and industry trends in this dynamic field. Students will be able to develop a range of practical and transferable skills that are valued by employers whilst fostering strong academic proficiencies across a number of innovatively designed Marketing modules. The pathway has been designed to cover a wide range of Marketing disciplines that relate to the varied career options available in this sector. We have modules that relate to dynamic themes such as Marketing Analytics and Marketing in the Digital Environment, and that address key areas such as Marketing Strategy and Research in Marketing. There is a focus on psychology with Consumer Behaviour and creative skills are developed in Marketing Communications and International Fashion Marketing. Students will be eligible to apply for entry to the CIM Professional Diploma. BM (Entrepreneurship) pathway Entrepreneurship is about pursuing opportunities beyond the resources you have at hand. It is a state of mind a desire and a passion for change and for making things happen. Entrepreneurs are pioneers and innovators who often build businesses from scratch, or work within their organizations to create new opportunities. Surrey Business School offers a wide variety of entrepreneurship optional modules; Entrepreneurship in the Digital Domain, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and Business Law. This pathway will provide a holistic, and at the same time, comparative view of entrepreneurial activity. Throughout it, you will explore different ways to facilitate entrepreneurship; learn how to consider financial and institutional systems in supporting entrepreneurship in different economies, and gain an analytical framework for understanding different approaches to entrepreneurial cultures. BM (HRM) pathway By choosing the BSc Business Management (HRM) pathway, you will be able to specialise in exploring the human dimensions of business and management. This is a complex but also an immensely exciting, rich and interdisciplinary area of knowledge, taught by experts from the People and Organisations subject group at Surrey Business School. In addition to the common business and management grounding provided across the pathways, you will study pathway modules in HRM,

10 organisational psychology, sociology of work, and employee relations, as well as having the opportunity to take further specialist pathway modules (e.g. in law, leadership, decision-making or international aspects of people management), and/or complement the pathway modules with optional modules from other pathways. Business organisations are unthinkable without people and, whichever career you choose, you will need to make sense of the behaviours of others once you join a workplace. The HRM pathway will not only prepare you particularly well for a career in Human Resources Management, but will also equip you with the essential people-focused foundations for other managerial and non-managerial careers. The University of Surrey is currently the highestranking institution in the South East of England to offer an MBus Business Management with Human Resources Management pathway.
