1 Survey The State of Mobility in the Enterprise in 2014: An IDC Survey of Devices, Platforms, Decisions, and Deployments Ben Hoffman IDC OPINION IDC recently fielded results for its Enterprise Mobile Device Survey and received a total of 402 responses from enterprise mobility decision makers in the United States and the United Kingdom. The responses in this survey place a spotlight on the significance of mobile devices, platforms, and deployments on enterprise strategy in the United States and the United Kingdom. The following are a few of the key findings from the survey results: Android is a legitimate enterprise platform. The spawning of BYOD within the enterprise ecosystem means that the devices employees are bringing are typically consumer centric. Because Android is the most widely used smartphone operating system (OS) in the United States and the United Kingdom, it is perhaps unsurprising to see that enterprises are allowing employees to leverage the platform as an employee-liable option. Windows Phone/Windows Mobile is also a widely supported platform, pointing to the platform's dominance in the rugged handheld space and growing reputation as a platform that can be synched fairly effortlessly with existing Microsoft back-end infrastructure. Tablet growth continues. Tablets, now a staple device for consumers across the world, are becoming commonplace within the enterprise as well. A significant majority of respondents (82.1%) participating in IDC's 2014 survey stated that they plan to deploy tablet devices within their organization in the next 6 12 months. BYOD yields financial benefits. One of the more debated questions with regard to BYOD is whether it actually saves money for the company that is implementing the approach. According to IDC's survey results, approximately 67% of respondents stated their organization has saved costs by incorporating an employee-liable model, compared with only 3.5% of respondents that state their organization has spent more money following the implementation of BYOD. 2 IN THIS STUDY Methodology In February 2014, IDC fielded and completed the Enterprise Mobile Device Survey of 402 respondents, with approximately 60% of the respondents from the United States and the remaining 40% from the United Kingdom. Respondents were screened against two sets of criteria. First, they had to have some level of active involvement in the decision-making process for mobile enterprise application purchases (refer to Table 1). Second, they must belong to an organization with at least 1,000 employees (refer to Table 2). We discuss the results of the screening criteria for respondents that were accepted and included in the survey (refer to Tables 1 and 2). The survey was reported at a 95% level of confidence. Survey respondents were apprised of the following prior to participating in the survey: This survey explores some of the critical mobile solution deployment criteria and mobile application requirements of organizations and also addresses key mobile management, security, and solution decision making for enterprises today. Your input will be directly used to help mobile solutions companies better meet the needs of organizations like yours. For the purposes of this survey, "mobile device" always refers to mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Please answer all questions based on your organization's relevant business decisions and usage of mobile devices and solutions. All responses are strictly confidential and will be used only in aggregate with others. Note: All numbers in this document may not be exact due to rounding. 4 Mobility Decisions, Spending, and Benefits Enterprise Mobility Decisions As mobility decisions continue to permeate and dominate many aspects of enterprise IT strategy, there is significant leakage of these decisions within the context of an enterprise's overall business strategy. Mobile enterprise decisions, whether around device purchases or app deployments, create a significant need to focus on not only how these decisions will affect the role of IT but also how they will affect various lines of business and the enterprise as a whole. Unlike last year's survey, where joint effort decision making between business unit and IT led the responses, this year's survey shows that IT usually initiates and leads these decisions, at 46.8%. This is followed by the joint method approach, at 35.6% of responses. IT Mobility Budgets Beyond determining which components of the business make decisions around mobility, one key piece of making enterprise mobility decisions is establishing a budget. The business side of the enterprise has a significant tie-in to this part of the decision-making process, especially in cases where lines of business are heavily involved. An example of this is the mobilization of business applications for a specific line of business such as finance. In this case, funding will frequently combine various budget sources within the organization. That said, many mobility projects are driven in large part, if not exclusively, by established IT budgets. According to this year's survey, 25.6% of respondents indicate that their organizations are spending 10% to less than 20% of their IT budgets on mobilization efforts. There is good indication that enterprises continue to be committed to enterprisewide mobilization projects and efforts. Expected Mobility Benefits The expected benefits of adopting and leveraging mobility can vary dramatically depending on the employee's role within an enterprise organization. Unsurprisingly, we find that worker productivity leads the list, with 26.9% of respondents. This is followed by improved competitive advantage at 16.7% and increased sales/revenue at 15.2%. Mobile Operating System Support Not only has the consumerization of IT brought with it a massive shift in the way that enterprises view mobility as a means for employee productivity and satisfaction, but it has also changed the technologies that enterprises are supporting from a mobility standpoint. Whereas BlackBerry OS was the leading enterprise-supported mobile operating system as of a mere five years ago, Apple's ios and Android have since taken over as the favored enterprise-ready devices. Today, 77.1% of enterprises in the United States and the United Kingdom support Android, followed by 68.9% of enterprises that support ios, 65.7% that support Windows Phone/Windows Mobile, and 31.1% that support BlackBerry OS. Of note is that more U.S. respondents listed Windows Phone/Windows Mobile as a supported mobile operating system than ios. This, along with the fact that Android was named the most supported OS in both the United States and the United Kingdom, is perhaps a reflection of the slant toward less security-conscious industries within this survey. Further, the fairly heavy number of manufacturing responses may include a number of organizations that leverage Windows for ruggedized devices IDC #

Providing Corporate-Liable Devices While BYOD is certainly taking off within the enterprise ecosystem, it is important to keep in mind that the corporate-liable model is still a piece of most organizations, especially those that reside within a regulated industry. A mobile device is considered corporate liable if the company pays for the device and its corresponding data plan. The survey reveals that 20.1% of respondents identified that 30 39% of employees, today, are fitted with corporate-liable devices. An additional 15% indicated that 20 29% of their employees are fitted with corporate-liable devices. Operating System Support for Corporate-Liable Devices Among enterprises that reported at least a portion of employees are utilizing a corporate-liable device, Android was the leading OS, again indicating both a skew toward certain verticals and Android's growing relevance within enterprises both in the United States and in the United Kingdom. Figure 7 shows that 69.2% of enterprises reported support of Android corporate-liable devices, followed by ios at 63.4% and Windows Phone/Windows Mobile at 60.4%. Also mentioned previously is the dominance of Windows Mobile as the rugged device OS of choice, which would in part explain the high percentage of responses pointing toward Windows Phone/Windows Mobile as the corporate-liable device OS of choice. BlackBerry OS remains a viable platform for corporate-liable devices, with 30.8% of respondents stating they are still supporting this OS IDC #

Operating System Support for Employee-Liable Devices The BYOD paradigm has created a new set of challenges for IT. One of these challenges is the need for IT to decide which mobile platforms it will support and to what degree for each. Figure 8 shows that support levels for employee-liable devices are not significantly different from support levels for corporate-liable devices. Once again, Android is the leading OS of choice for employee-liable devices, at 67.9%. Next is Windows Phone/Windows Mobile at 60.4%, closely followed by ios with 58%. BlackBerry OS is fourth at 29.1%. One explanation for the similarities is that, since a large portion of enterprises continue to provide corporate-liable devices, they are making the decision to extend support to employee-liable devices on the same platforms as these corporate-liable devices IDC #

Of the operating systems you will be deploying, which operating systems are deployed for employee-liable devices (employee pays for device and data plan) that access corporate data such as corporate or other corporate applications? Employee-Liable Support Decision Factors Allowing users device choice was the number 1 factor (56.7% of respondents), followed by cost savings for the company at 54.8% and ensuring that devices accessing the corporate network have the correct security/policies in place at 54.1%. Of the surveyed participants, 18.8% indicated that 40 49% of employees currently own their mobile devices and that they are currently supported by IT. An additional 13.1% of respondents surveyed indicated that 20 29% of employees use their own devices; 12.7% of respondents noted that 30 39% of their employees use own their devices. In 12.1% of companies surveyed, 50 59% of employees use their own employee-liable mobile devices. Myriad factors go into deciding which groups or individual employees within an organization will be allowed to use an employee-liable device. Another 26.7% of respondents surveyed indicated that the particular tier level within the organization also factored into the decision. Unsurprisingly, the leading response pointed to employees in an executive position within the organization, at 74.2% of surveyed respondents. IT staff is a close second at 71%, followed by knowledge workers at 60.5% IDC #

8 A question that enterprises often consider before initiating a BYOD model within their respective organization is whether enabling employees to utilize devices of their choice will actually make a difference to the organization's bottom line. According to the survey, 66.6% of respondents stated that their respective organization has seen net savings through reduced opex or capex spending, or a combination of both. This is followed by 22.6% of respondents stating that having an employee-liable model has not created any net savings and that, from a financial standpoint, things are the same as they were prior to allowing BYOD. Only 3.5% of respondents stated that having an employee-liable model has resulted in a net loss via greater opex or capex spend. Based on these results, BYOD is a method for enterprises to reduce costs. FUTURE OUTLOOK Future Mobile Investments and Decisions Enterprise Mobile Investment Plans Based on the responses in this survey, we can conclude that both enterprise IT and management are satisfied with the way their mobility efforts and programs have panned out. Many organizations report that their expectations have been exceeded with respect to benefits incurred from various mobility initiatives and deployments. Because of these positive results, IDC anticipates enterprises will continue along the path of devising and implementing new mobile project plans that will further add to their established successes. A prime example of this lies in their plans to further invest in mobile technologies. Future OS Support Figure 15 shows which mobile operating systems enterprises plan on supporting within the next 12 months. Android, again, is the leading mobile OS selection, at 77.9%, followed by ios at 71.6%, Windows Phone/Windows Mobile at 70.4%, and BlackBerry OS at 32.8%. IDC expects that, because enterprises are showing a preference for a corporate-liable and employee-liable mix, many organizations will continue to take a "hybrid" approach, deploying corporate-liable devices to certain groups or employees and allowing other groups or individuals to bring in the mobile devices of their choosing IDC #

Enterprise Tablet Plans Tablets continue to become a staple technology of enterprise employees. Tablet manufacturers are increasingly building their enterprise stories and are, more than ever, providing technology that is suitable for business use. IDC expects that enterprises will continue moving forward with tablet adoption, especially in light of any and all planned mobile application deployments they have in store. 82.1% of all respondents in this survey stated their organization is planning on deploying tablets in the next 12 months. 67.2% of respondents stated their company had plans to deploy Apple ipads in the next 6 12 months, followed by Microsoft Surface at 55% and the Samsung GALAXY Tab at 53% IDC #

If you are deploying tablets within the next 6 12 months to deploy mobile business applications to employees, which tablet do you plan to deploy? ESSENTIAL GUIDANCE IDC offers the following guidance for enterprises evaluating their mobile device deployments: Different employees have different needs when it comes to mobility. Not every employee needs a corporate-liable mobile device, and in the same vein, the employee-liable approach may only work for specific groups or individual employees within an organization. Decisions around mobility are best made when combining the strategic forces of both enterprise IT and lines of business. This way, an organization can cover all of its bases when implementing new mobility strategies or adopting new mobile technology. The incredible rise of BYOD has, to nobody's surprise, created a massive need for mobile security and management solutions as a means to control BYOD's correlative rise in security threats. While the discussion in the days of the purely corporate-liable approach revolved primarily around mobile device management (MDM), and protecting the hardware itself, the discussion has shifted toward a much more granular focus. Now, mobile content management (MCM) solutions exist through a plethora of vendors, and they are built to address the core concern that enterprises have: corporate data security and management. Today, enterprises can deploy these solutions, which help put business and IT executive minds at ease while allowing employees to keep their personal content private and untouchable IDC #
